Hi Chris Tell them maybe you'll be surprised on how much support
you'll have from them to.I was the same way but I called them and
told them. They were all surprised but now happy mostly after the
they seen me after the surgery and down 64 lbs in less then two
months. So it wouldn't hurt to talk and see what they say.I wish you

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Family Issues

Chris,
I think everyone has difficulty telling their families. I also know that
there are loads of people out there whose families haven't been
supportive or want them to have the surgery. The decision to tell your
family is up to you and it is one that shouldn't be taken lightly. The
major things to think about are probably, How does your family react to
your weight--do they make fun of you, ignore it or always try to get you
to go on one diet after another? My family didn't ignore it or make fun
of me, but they were always suggesting diets to try. [Try to explaining
to a woman who weighs about 98 lbs. sopping wet (my sister, even after 4
children) that you've tried all the diets in the world and nothing
works! ]Another question, is anyone else in your family overweight or
obese? Sometimes, if there is more than one person who has a weight
problem, it is easier to tell them your decision. Sometimes though it
isn't. That other person may be jealous that you decided to take your
life into your own hands. It depends on your family. You know your
family better than anyone else. Do you think they will be supportive of
you or do you think they will think you are taking the easy way out? I
was one of the lucky ones who had my family behind me 100%. The never
tried to talk me out of it or suggest other things to try first and they
are really pleased that is worked for me. The decision to tell your
family is up to you....I know it's difficult but they are your family
after all.
I'm sorry if this doesn't help but it's the only advice I can
give.....hope you get through this --with the support of your entire
family. Good luck to you in your journey!

Family Issues

2008-08-31 08:29:27

I was just wondering if anyone else out there has had trouble
discussing this surgery with their family. I am scheduled for
surgery on November 12, and I have not told anyone in my family
(sisters, brother, mom, etc.) My husband is very supportive of me
but I just wonder if anyone else is in this type of situation. I
have an 18 year old niece who is going to be helping me out after the
surgery and she is the only other person in my family to know.
What should I do?
Thanks for you help

My news: got on the scale this morning (yes ...I was FORCED to buy a

myself every day but am limiting it to once a week) I am now at 332.
That is exactly 100 lbs GONE FOREVER! I am really excited!!!
Anyway, great job Vickie! I look forward to that day! Keep up the good

Yes!!!!!!!!!!! The ginger tea is wonderful! The only surgery I've
ever had in my life (so far LOL) is a c-section. The next morning
the nurse brought me some ginger tea, and I told her I don't like tea
and she said "you'll like this tea and it helps with the gas", so I
tried it, and I loved it! It also made me feel A LOT better. So I
asked her how to make it and all it is, is pour some ginger ale in
the tea and add sweatener too if you want. I still drink it once in
a while if I'm not feeling well. Maybe you'd want to use diet ginger
ale and Splenda, and let the ginger ale go a little flat. But I'm
sure it will help! And don't worry to much about how you are
feeling, my coworker who had open RNY said it took a couple of months
before she really felt good, so hang in there!!!! Better days are
ahead!

did you have the lap or incisional? they probably both itch but i had 7 lap
sites with 2 bad ones - mine we getting painful (sore) and itching so being
RN i took my tweezer and took off what looked like scabs and it was the
corner of a stitch that was supposed to be inside so when i found that out i
went to town clipping those stitches but the stitch was on the inside - i
had to pull stitches out of all of them and after that they weren't sore and
now i'm healing good
i too walk around everywhere scratching my belly and if we are with some ppl
talking is when its the worst of course so i usually tell them the problem

You may also do well in turning off the cravings if you can just to a

your system and give your metabolism a boost. Once things start moving for

Hi Virginia, I'm Mary and I am 59 years old. I personally did not have to do
anything to get ready for surgery. Some doctors require you to lose weight
before hand but mine did not. Some require a liquid diet a few day prior but
again mine did not. I am in a wheelchair, I had lots of medical problems and I
weighed almost 400 lb. The only thing that he asked was that I have my main
meal in the middle of the afternoon the day before, and then have liquid up
until midnight the night before. I did wonderful and was only in hospital 2
days. It has been 6 1/2 months and I have lost 91 lb.. Hope this helps. If
your
doctors doesn't stipulate any special diet then I would not worry about it. I
was able to have Lap even as big as I was. It is the best thing that I could
have done for myself. I would do it over in a heartbeat. Good Luck!

My hubby is active duty, in fact he deploys next month. I was kinda
hoping to get this done quicker then the 2 year's Madigan Army
Medical Center is saying it could take, because this time next year
we'll be PCS'ing to Hawaii. I definately don't want to have to start
over at a new hospital. We have so many doctors deployed right now,
they're not even offering the lap. It's open rny or nothing. The
nurse and doctor who did consult even tried to tell all of us in the
meeting (there was like 15) that TriCare wasn't paying to do it at
civilian hospitals anymore, which I know is a crock. A friend of
mine got hers done in Seattle a few months ago, but then she'd been
on the list for 18 months already and had her surgical date bumped
several times. I also know someone else who had it done in a
civilian hospital within months of talking to her PCP(and tricare
paid 100%), but her BMI was really really high and she had a bunch of
other health problems.
I guess I need to make an appie with my PCP and see what he knows. I
need re-fills on my meds and I have to see him to get those, so might
as well milk him for all the info I can.

I think it's more about how the surgery will affect the sleep apnea. It is
supposed to diminish as you loose weight. I think that they do need to know that
you have it when you go into surgery so that the anesthesiologist can monitor
you for any problems.

I first talked to my Dr. in Dec. then again in Aug and Sept. (he was deployed
for the war) On Sept 15 he said he would write the consult. I called tricare a
couple times they had nothing. so on Oct. 9th I called and left a message with
his RN. she always calls back within 72 working hours. there was the weekend
and Monday was a holiday. I am pretty patient ( I am a nurse and know how awful
it can get sometimes)
She called me on the 16th said she would do the consult and DR would have to
sign it and if I hadnt heard from Tricare by Nov 3rd for me to call them. low
and behold Wright patt called me on Friday.the 17 and said they are now doing
the surgery at the base hospital and I have appt with him on the 23rd. I dont
know if I am approved or not. MyPCP was not to concerned about my attempts
that have failed over the years that my surgery would be approved for medical
reasons. I am on disability because of osteoporosis. last Aug he told me I would
never work again that was Aug 28th my birthday and on Sept 19 my social
security was approved on what records he sent them. I did not see their Dr or
anyone in rehab. SOOOOOO I have complete trust in my Dr and that is a good
feeling. my medical record has almost as much in in since April of 2002 ( when
my back said NO MORE!!!!!) as it did all the time I have gone to Wright Patt
and my husband retired in 81 so have been going there since.\
Are you a active duty dependant or retired and where do you live. maybe
coming here might be possible who knows I am sure tricare would rather a
Milatary vs civilian hospital.
The DR name they gave me is DR.Vesco I cannot find him anywhere in my
computer I looked thru all 50 states and DC.
Lets keep in touch we both know noone understands military unless you have

with the surgeon and have a consult with behavorial health in 2
weeks. I was suppose to have the nutrition clinic consult the other
day, but when I got there the clinic was closed so I had to
reschedule.
I'm just a little miffed, the paperwork the doctor gave us in the

and not to call our PCP's until 6 months had passed to see where
we're at on the list.

Saw my PCM

2008-08-23 22:11:55

Well I had my appointment with my PCM and I talked to him as well about my
strength/energy problem. He said the same thing my surgeon did basically.
That I had just had major surgery and that it could be a couple more weeks
before I felt myself again.
I asked him to do an iron count and he said ok but that he was sure that was
not the problem. He said he could tell by the rosy glow of my cheeks that I
was not anemic. He also said he would do a thyroid check but he didn't
think there would be anything wrong there either.
HE gave me a perspective that seems obvious but I never really looked at it
like that. I am only taking in 6-700 calories per day and almost none of
those are carbs. He said that was not enough to sustain someone of my size
(weight). He said that if someone who was within their weight guideline was
taking in that few calories they would not have their normal amount of
strength/energy either. He told me that energy has to come from somewhere.
So I chewed on that as I drove home and I thought about what would my
husband/son be like if they were on so few calories. I doubt they could
even get out of bed.
So I have decided to just accept that it is going to take a few weeks more
maybe for me to feel better and appreciate the things that are already
better.
By the way...thanks you Wolfie for your concern. I really appreciated your
e-mails.

Very true Allan. My sister had heard of a man that left the hospital, went
straight to a deli, got a huge hoagie and a coke. Went home and ate it all and
was found dead. People just do not realize that things have been redone and its
not a game. This is a for real surgery to be taken seriously and made with
adult decision. There was also a person I heard of that was having problems and
didnt want to bother the doctor, I think was the story, well she didnt get the
medical attention she needed and of course it was a sad ending. People just
have to learn to call the doctor. Get to the hospital if they think that
something could be wrong. Better safe than sorry.

1 out of every 200

2008-08-23 03:04:05

I couldnt help but get caught up in all the posts about death
especially since my surgery is not far off. While doing my research(of
wich I did ver intesly)I also found out that 1 out of every 200 have
complications and die,but my answer that I could not find out about
that number is how many of those deaths are attributed to the
patients own negligence. For those of us who did plenty of research we
noted that weeks before the surgery we should be taking in plenty of
water and getting well hydrated and also walking .We also noted that
we should be drinking plenty of water after surgery and also walking.
One has to wonder just how many of that 1 in 200 die to to their
negligence and not the fault of their surgeon.

a c-section but then this and i thought i could have his support and he
stays gone the whole day - and his mom is living with us and i added in that
she didn't even offer to make me a meal
i just had 2 dayss of the flu with 101 plus fever, sweating/freezing, body
hurting --- and i'm the only one in the house.
Tanya
Hey Girl,
Well for one thing. Momma is dead weight for ya. Get her butt gone. If
you have to be there and do for yourself without her helping out then tell her
company is like dead fish...it all stinks after three days, lol. Thats what
my Mom always says, lmbo. With you being sick your hubby should have spent some
time helping you more. I think I have heard of the fosamax. Let me know where
you get it. You said the mother in law "LIVES" there? Not a good thing. Never
saw a house big enough for two women. Can lead to major problems. How long has
she been living with you two?

Hi Dawn

My name is Leah and my surgery is Nov 11th, husbands is Oct 21st. We have found
a drink at wal-mart called Fruit 2 0 with Splenda. Comes in Rasberry, Lemon, &
Strawberry. I like the Lemon the best. Also, Diet RC an Diet Rite are
sweetened with Splenda, but I don't think soda is allowed after surgery. Diet
Rite is also caffine free. I have never liked any diet soda until I tried them,
they really taste good.
Welcome to the group!

Just found out I have sleep apnea

I went for a sleep study last night and the tech told me that I
have "mild" sleep apnea. They put a cpap on me at 3:00 AM and said I
slept better with it on. The sleep clinic will be sending the report
to my pcp, who will go over it with me. Does anyone know how having
sleep apnea effects the surgery? Leah

Lori Anne, I want to thank you for your honesty. I am just starting
on this journey... not sure it is what I want, but have to do
something, I have the health problems. I think for those of us
contemplating this WLS, it's important to hear both sides. So
thank you for your insight, as much as those that are doing
wonderfully and would do it again. Janice

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Ok, what now?...

2008-08-21 10:06:17

Wolfie
I am truly happy for you and you are doing wonderfully congratulation on your
outstanding loss. I entered into my surgery fully informed and eager and now
that I am in it I know exactly the road of life ahead of me and I accepted it
then and I am in it now. My path is not the same as yours I never felt held
back my weight I have always been a good looking chick at any size and I never
let that stand in my way on any level. I chose my surgeon and the type of
surgery I wanted and have no scars what so ever and no one would even know I had
surgery if I chose not to tell they would just think I am on a diet that
works. I did my surgery purely to look better not for health reason or issues
because I have none. Since my surgery was not to improve my life or health I
now
know that I should have done it a better way. This is how I feel and I am
only speaking on my own behalf. I am overjoyed that you would do it all again
but as for me I would not and it is not hormones speaking to you or a phase it
is how I truly feel. If anyone was to ask me about the surgery I would tell
them do your research join a support group or two get informed and take your
chance if you want to. I would not say heck yeah do it. For anyone who thinks
this is the easy way out you are the crazy ones this is the hardest thing to
live with for an entire lifetime.

No criticism here but I'd like to know what you told your insurance company in
order to have the surgery. I, myself, had to jump through a lot of hoops to get
this surgery. I had to be at least 100 lbs overweight, have tried everything
else to lose weight and have co-morbidity illnesses. I had to explain all this
in detail. I also had to have a good series of tests -- including assuring each
and every doctor that I wasn't doing this 'just to look better' -- which was
(for me anyway) a big no-no for my doctors and would guarantee non-approval.
[Now I understand why if regret is what follows.] There are so many people on
this list who actually need this surgery for major health reasons, would totally
appreciate it for the blessing it is and have been denied that I'm sure they
would be grateful to hear how they can get it done by just telling the insurance
company they want to look better. I'm curious to know what you told your
insurance company to get them to approve this surgery
or did you pay for it out of pocket?
Curious,

Artificial Sweetener- A winner at last!

2008-08-20 21:39:11

Lori wrote:

I know of a sweetener called STEVIA. I always used artificial
sweeteners until my sister (a clinical nutritionist) turned me on to
STEVIA. It tastes great and I prefer it over the artificial ones.
Some interesting info about this:
-30x sweeter than sugar (just like the artificial ones)
-It's a fiber (475MG per packet)Extracted from Stevia leaves
-4 packets provides the same fiber as a bowl of whole grain cereal
-Improves regularity
-Cleanses the colon
-Helps produce vitamins
-Assists and strengthens the immune system
-Supports liver health
-Supports the function of the pancreas
-Prevents the overgrowth of yeast
-Helps control the formation of free radicals (cancer contributors)
-Does not adversley affect blood sugar/safe for Diabetics
All this info is on the box but my sister researched and agrees with
all of it. You can find it in health food stores in a green box-the
manufacturer is SWEET LEAF.
Has anyone already heard of this and tried it post-op?
Thanks for all your posts. I could not have made an informed
surgery decision without you all!

Doctor Referral

2008-08-20 13:54:24

Well I saw my family doctor today and she is going to make a referral
to my insurance company for me to see a Bariatric Surgeon. She said
there is one group in particular that my insurance company uses and
she gave me a little detail about what will happen the first time I
go to see them (that is if the insurance company OK's it. In the
meantime I have to go back next week to have fasting blood work. She
told me it will take about 7-10 days to hear from the insurance
company once she submits the referral so I guess I just have to wait
and see what happens! I'm excited, nervous and scared to death but
then again I'm sure everyone whose been through this process has felt
the same way at one time or another. I'll keep you all posted on
what's happening!!

Modomiko1

2008-08-19 22:57:48

Dear Modomiko, (Sorry but I don't know your name).
I'm the one that posted about still eating 2 oz. after a year and not being
hungry. Let me tell you, honey, I'm way more the exception than the rule.
I don't know why I'm still not hungry, but I count my blessings because
prior to the surgery, my food binges were rampant.
As for you "ranting" -- well, if you can't do it here, where can you do it?
I understand your frustration. The emotional eating is a killer. Does it
help to talk/write about what's going on instead of eating? How about
starting your own support group? Some of the best support groups come about
when the person who starts them is trying to fill a need they have of their
own. Do you have any local friends that have had or are considering having
the surgery? Maybe you can start small in someone's home and then, as it
grows, move to a church or something? When you move out of your head and
into a positive direction to help yourself, maybe you will lose the focus of
eating to satisfy your emotions. (Can you tell I was a long-term member of
overeaters anonymous?)
If you can't get into a local thing that suits your needs, keep checking out
the webgroups until you find your comfort level where you feel you can speak
freely and get the help you need.
You may also do well in turning off the cravings if you can just to a
"protein feast" for a few (3) days. It will get the carb cravings out of
your system and give your metabolism a boost. Once things start moving for
you again, a boost in your feelings about what you're doing may give you the
strength to stop the emotional eating.
If I can be of any assistance, in any way, don't hesitate to contact me
either through the group or personally. My best wishes to you for success.

3 month update

2008-08-18 13:27:49

Well folks,
It has been 3 months since the big day. The Dr says I am doing fine. My total
cholesteral is 93. But I never really had a problem with high cholesterol to
begin with. It's just not in my genes. My Primary dr saw the labs too and says
I am genetically made for the WLS. My HDL level was low, only 35. THis means I
am not getting enough exercise. I knew that, I didn't need the labwork to
snitch on me. :P
I asked him about the diet soda, he was OK with it so long as it didn't
interfere with my intake of protiens. (It doesn't, work interferes with my
intake) He's also Ok with me having a little coffee in the morning... :)
Now, before anyone jumps up and down and tells me it's poison, the coffee I can
NOT do without...so save your breath. The main thing is I am happy, losing
weight and most importantly, HEALTHY!
YAY ME!

Well, I haven't posted before, so let me introduce myself. I'm Lisa, had my

Tanya,
I don't mean to contradict the nurse practitioner. But I have heard this
told to me by so many medical people that I know I am correct on this. Not
just any calcium will do. I made the mistake of taking the carbonate at first
and was told to get off of it and start the citrate. It is more readily absorbed
and because of the malasorption issues we have after surgery the citrate is
what is more absorbed. No way , absolutely no way, would I take just regular
calcium. I researched this for many many months prior to surgery and still
messed up and took the carbonate. So I researched some more and found out I was
wrong. I listened to whom I shouldn't and almost made my bones pay the price.

the hospital the surgery will be performed at is here, it's also the same dr's

they interviewed a "person" for the success story, it was actually a woman
who had the surgery with them, BUT she works for them. Obviously she would only
have GREAT things to say about them. I think they should have used a success
story, but someone who would have been unbiased in their opinion. I'm the

Chris: Medications... There is a light

2008-08-12 06:38:08

I had my surgery 5/27. Have been taking my medications "whole" for
almost a month. My Dr. said I could try at the three month mark. we
all have different reactions but I am now fine taking them without
crushing. This too shall pass! Be well. Stephanie

Milestones!

2008-08-12 06:06:35

I mostly lurk but I just had to post, hoping these small sucesses
offer someone else some hope.
Just broke the 200 lb mark!! 198 lb's it has been years. Also have
been needing to buy clothes as I am shrinking out of mine, well I
just got a few items size large! No more X sizes. From a 3-4x to a
generic off the rack size large, I am naturally thrilled. A friend
saw me in my swimsuit the other day and said "Oh my, where did your
stomach go".Still in the process of appealing my insurance denial but
I must tell you all even if I lose and wind up paying this off for
years to come it will have been worth it. Got an exercise bike to
work with these thighs.Slowly, begining to add this to my regimen as
thus far my only exercise has been swimming. Be well all. Stephanie

This was sent to me from another group I thought it was something I should share

Hi WLS world!!!
I have been out here just reading all the posts but have never posted. My name
is Bonnie, I am from Michigan and I finally got approved thanks to all the
suggestions from the room. Was denied for a couple reasons the first time
and accepted the second time but it took what seemed to be such a lonnnnnnng
time. The only thing I can say about the insurance game is stick to your guns
and if it doesn't go according to what you think is right you can also write
the insurance commissioner of your state. That usually straightens the
insurance companies out real quick.
I have the scope done tomorrow the 17th, I go back up the 30th for dietician
meeting and signing of all the papers and my surgery is November 10th.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!
I am on such an emotional rollercoaster right now. I wish there was something
that would make it better.
This is a great group. I have learned so much from all of you that has helped
me come to terms with a lot of different issues. Why am I still so scared? I
need and want this surgery so bad. Is it ok to be ok with the decision to go
ahead and still be scared?
Thanks for being there for me and teaching me so much about the new lifestyle.
You are all wonderful!!! Thanks for letting me introduce myself. Bonnie aka
Huggs

I won't miss that life again. I was miserable. Always felt like the real me
was trapped on the inside and crying to get out. I wanted to be healthy and I am
getting there so fast! And I am so much happier. Like the Carly Simon

yes its harder now...but I wouldn't have it any other way. For me it is like
picking between sunshine and storms. Ya know ya gotta have a little bit of both

I live in Chicago, IL.
I am having a hard time with food craving and lots of emotional wants
for food. I am tring all my tricks but it scares me when this
happens. The "support group" here for people who have had the surgery
is a joke and that is rough. I just feel really alone with it all. I
often have felt scared to post in the past about my struggles with
feas I will hear that I am bad for struggling.
I am not sure w here else to turn. It is really rough. I read
someones post about only eating 2 oz a day at on year post op and I
eat more than that at a meal. I worry that I am eating to much. My
body used to tell me quickly if it had had enough,a nd now it is slow
with that so sometimes I eat more then feel sick. It is hard to gauge
what is the "right" amount to take in.
Thanks for letting me rant

Hey Wolfie,
I like your response! Tucker Carlson is just an example of alot of
people I know that run their mouths about without knowing what
they're talking about. It's bad enough trying to convince your
family and friends that wls surgery is a necessity without having to
listen to this stuff on tv! Lets face it - it was hard for each and
everyone of us to get to the point that we decided to have surgery.
How dare someone like Tucker Carlson say we are lazy when he hasn't
been in our shoes! I think its important to point out that they
have found that hormone ghrelin or whatever its called that affects
our eating and wls keeps the ghrelin in check.
Enough complaining by me for awhile,
Keep up the good work Wolfie!

People like you are so infuriating. You have this outlook about things that
you know nothing of. Sure you "Hear about topics" and you have what you call
your OPINION. But you know what people say about opinions right? I am also a WLS
patient. I have had the surgery and have now rid myself of so many of the
comordities I had. Diabetes is such a debilitating disease. I tried every diet.
I
walked. I did all I could to try and help myself. People think this is the
easy way out. FAR FROM IT! It was the hardest decision I ever had to make for
myself. And everyday of constant choices and structure for a WLS patients life.
It is a life altering decision to live healthy. I had this surgery for the
health issues alone. Not for the sake of being thin. That was a bonus. But the
idea of losing my sight, my limbs, organ damage from the diabetes alone was more
than I was willing to gamble with. It is usually a person that has never had
to struggle with their weight that has this assinine opinions of those of us
that do. Well Mr. Carlson believe me, you have not won many points in the WLS
world! There are many of us out here and more on the way. And every one of us
is sending
your message out so the world can see what kind of people are allowed to
voice the opinion of stupidity in our world today. Have a nice day Mr. Carlson.
And do yourself a favor. Walk a mile in our shoes before you try to judge us for
something you know nothing about!!!!! P.S. Al Roker is a beacon for this
surgery. What beacon do you represent? I have a few ideas but I don't think you
would like them. A very small shack type building with a moon on it comes to
mind.

Also can someone tell methe name of the group that is for people one year

eat? What do you mean?
I need to get my food back on track and my exercise up.
Also, I have been in the ER af ew times since my surger for dehydration.. has
anyone else had trouble with this? It is usually following a bad flu or bout

I think that it really would depend on the size of the pill. If its bigger
than an M&M I would definitely break it in half or grind it up. I just heard
from another support group where a fellow WLS group member had forgotten and
took
a pill whole. It ripped his pouch and released into his system. He had to
have a second surgery. So you just have to be so careful with the new pouch. He
had his surgery two weeks prior to this happening.

Hi everyone. I found a low carb store and bought some plain bread
and some Rye bread.
They have only 1.5g of Carbs per slice. Which is great for those of
us that love bread.
I have used the Rye Bread to make Reubens, it has great protein from
