Hi all ! Well, as most of you know I am on a 12 week Optifast program that
my insurance requires me to go on b-4 they will cover my surgery. I have been
losing each week on the Optifast but, last week was only a pound so imagine my
delight when I got on the scale and it said that I had lost 3.3 more lbs!!!!
That makes it 19 almost 20lbs in 4 weeks!!!!! YAY for me!!!!! I'm so
excited!!! I started out on Optifast weighing 343 now I weigh 324!!! Well,
you

Well, It's the night before surgery. I think until right now this
still seemed kind of surreal, but in 12 hours it will be all over
with (actually, the surgical part will be over with...the rest will
be just starting) I have learned a lot from everyone who posts on
here, and really appreciate it. I don't post all that often, but I
sure hope that I will start when I have something more to contribute
that will be able to help others! Thanks to all who have answered my
questions, or offered support. It really truly has been wonderful.
I will cut the sappiness---I think the pre-op diet is going to my
head! Thanks again as I sign off for the final time as a pre-op!!!
Health and Happiness to All,

Hi Everyone,
Today is a very special day for me. I had GBS 1 year ago
today. I have been really out of touch with my beautiful GBS family
due to my crazy life but I want you all to know that you are all
always in my heart. On a day like today there isn't anything else on
my mind but the gratitude that I have in my heart for this family
and my 3 little angels Lori, Di, and Susan. Without you guys I
would've never survived or had the strength to go through with my
surgery. You guys held me up and supported me in a way that no one
else could've. I am so overwhelmed with emotions as I truly truly
hold you all very dear to my heart. With tears of gratitude I want
you all to know that there is no one in my life that I can thank on
a day like today more than you guys. Lori, Di and Susan I'm sending
you guys a HUGE hug and know that you guys are never forgotten. I'm
still here and every once in a while when I have time to go on my
computer, I check in and read the posts. I'm looking forward to my
life settling down in the near future and I pomise that I will be
back in the swing of things. I would love the opportunity to guide
and support someone to the best of my ability the way you all did
for me. I love you all......... Big Giant HUGS !!!!!!!

Hi Everyone I don't remember this test. When I got out of surgery
they had the little tube in my nose sucking everything out of my
stomach. After 24 hours they removed it after seeing everything was
OK all I had the frist 24 hours was ice chips and swabs for my dry
mouth. So was this the test. They said that doing this would tell them
if I had a leak or not.Oh don't want to scare anyone but on my news
in Iowa said that two women died of RYN stomach By-pass today here
in a Iowa Hospital.I don't know what happen yet are Why.If I find
out what went wrong I'll let everyone know.So anyone here in Iowa
going to have surgery theey reported they were going to slow down on
giving many bypasses here.I'm glad I had mine and was in Sioux
Falls,South Dakota not there.God Bless and I'm praying for the two
womens family here in Iowa.God Bless all of us who made it throught
the surgery so wonderful.a friend debkroll of Iowa.So sad of a day

I have a question, not one of you had anything to drink or eat the day
you had surgery? Not anything? Maybe I am weird because I was allowed
ice chips, water, Gatorade, juice and broth. Although it was mostly the
ice chips that I "ate". Is this unusual?
Tanya T.
I wasn't allowed any water or ice chips until after my contrast swallow
study, and I was worried about it. But it wasnt a problem. They kept so much
fluids pouring into me that it seemed I wasn't thirsty and my mouth wasn't even
dry. -- Jody Lap Fobi Pouch in Mexico 7 / 4 / 03 217/181/149
I think the tomato juice is fine. I drink a big glass of V-8 everyday and
my doc said that that was fine. But don't drink too much. You don't want

No you will not get anything to drink the whole first day. I had to leak

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody else is addicted to tomato juice. I love the
stuff and asked my surgeon about drinking it and he said it would be
fine. The problem is I am afraid I am drinking to much! Do you think I
can drink too much? I drink two pretty large glasses every night. One
good thing (I guess it is a good thing!) though is shortly after
drinking them I am on my way to the restroom!! No problems with the
plumbing here!
I also absolutely love sunflower seeds! I too buy the kind that you can
get two for a dollar or the bigger bags of the same kind that are $0.88
at Wal-Mart! Can you eat too much of these? I can snack on the things
all day long and eat an entire bag if I let myself. I try to limit
myself to no more than 1 cup of them a day but it is hard! Would it be
ok to eat more? It isn't like I am hungry, I haven't gotten hungry yet.
I guess I am just use to eating them from before surgery and they taste
so yummy!!
Any thoughts on the juice and the seeds? Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

I have heard too from people that it happens. I only take Lantus when my
glucose reads above 150. That's why I take it only about every third day.
It seems for some reason about every three days I will rise above the 150

what i was told by my wls surgeon and from my support group is that you can
expand your pouch by drinking caffeine you know soda's and other carbonated
beverages. also if you eat and drink at the same time that will cause you to eat
more, this is the way it explained to me imagine a dixie cup with a pin hole
in it (that is our stomach) now if you put some mashed potatoes in that cup it
will sit there for a while before it stars to go through the hole, but if you
take a cup of water and pour it in there then the potatoes will get runny and
go right through and then the cup (our stomach) will be empty and you will
want to fill it up again. that is why my wls not drinking anything until at
least
1/2 hour after you've eaten, i have heard others say differently but after i
given that analogy then it made since to me.

Personally, I would not let anybody cut me open who did not plan to do a leak
test. It can be so very dangerous if you do have leaks, that I wouldn't want to
take the chance of not knowing.
I couldn't have water beginning midnight 7/16. Sugery was early morning 7/17,
and I was not able to drink until after the leak test, probably around 9 on
7/18. When I thought about it beforehand, I thought to myself, "There's no
friggin way!", but all in all, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. No
ice chips for me, but they did allow these prepacked cotton swabs, like a giant
Q-tip, that was soaked in something lemony to swab my lips and inside my mouth.
The very first thing I was allowed to "drink" was that yucky mediciney liquid
for the swallow test. Yuck!

Kris, see what a year has done to you? That is a great observation, and you're
right, you will have to make better choices, I'd say even more so, after
surgery. Then it won't be just a matter of fat or low-fat, but what are the
most beneficial foods to put in your little pouch. Salad, as in your example,
probably won't be a good choice for you, unless it's just loaded with protein
and you're going to eat mostly that and leave the rest behind. But definitely
the portion control. And also, it can come to a matter of limitations, as far
as what's good for you, and what you can tolerate well. And then there's
exercise...a whole other subject! I'm glad you recognize this surgery isn't a
"magic pill", but a lot of work. You definitely are ready to move forward!

Just wanted to share some observations Ive made over the
last year or so while Ive been struggling about whether or
not to have the surgery. My partner and I went to lunch
one day at a restaurant known for their huge portions. We
saw a family of four (mom, dad, two kids ages around 10 and
12 boy and girl) who were thin/healthy sized, order two
salads and split them between the four of them. Thats all
they had. No desert, not a lot of bread, if any. And then
they left and continued their shopping. I couldnt believe
it. But then I started noticing other thin people and I
saw the effort they put into every menu choice. My sister
is a rail, shes the only thin one on my dads side of the
family and thats saying a lot b/c he was the second of
four boys and all his brothers have kids. She consciously
decides to go low-fat with every meal. She skips desert
regularly in an effort to keep her figure. My thin friends
and coworkers are the same way. So I know that maintaining
a nice figure and healthy weight is a struggle for every
one. Thin people arent thin b/c they dont like
cheesecake. Theyre thin b/c they make the decision that
their health is more important than their cravings. So I
know that when I have the surgery (I cant wait!!!), Ill
have to make that leap too and decide what my priorities
are at every meal. It will be a constant struggle but I
wont be alone. Ill be struggling with all the other
healthy eaters out there!
A poster from the health dept at my old college keeps going
through my mind. Its a little line that has become my
motto. If you dont find the time to be healthy now, you
have to find the time to be sick later. Thats it in a
nutshell.
For what its worth, thought Id share my perspective on
regaining weight and post-surgery diets/menus.
On another note I have my psych eval after work today.
Then all thats left is the EKG on 10/24. Im hoping for a
Jan 8th date. Less than three months away now! Im so
excited!!! Im almost afraid to be excited until I pass
all the tests and they really give me the green light. I
feel like something will ruin it all but Im trying to stay
positive.
Kris

Hello all. I've been reading the posts for a few weeks. I am pre-op; scheduled
for my open RNY on December 12. I have really gotten some great information from
the site and decided it was time to delurk. Pre-op I'm 255 with a goal of 150.
My surgeon will be Dr. Mary Murphy of Pacific Bariatric in San Diego. I live in
Montclair, CA and have Kaiser. The Fontana Kaiser has a program that you have to
go through before they will approve you for surgery. It takes 12 weeks,
attending a class once a week for about 2 hours. I highly recommend it. Of
course, they have some bugs to work out of their program, like processing
issues, but, on the whole, I feel rather well prepared for the change in my life
and am looking forward to it.
I have a question for Lori H.--or anybody else. Where do you get the liquid
Iron? I have been trying to find it.
Several people have talked about Nioxin. I found some products that contain
Biotin (to fight hair loss) at HerbalAdvisor.com. Much cheaper. I bought Biotin
lozenges, shampoo, and conditioner. I plan to start using it about a month
before the surgery. I can't afford to loose any hair, it's too thin as it is.
As to protein, Pacific Bariatric recommends ProComplex. I tried a lot of types
and actually like this the best. It contains 55 grams of protein in a 12 oz.
serving. I figure I'll have to take a while to get in all 12 oz. once I have the
surgery, but I won't have to worry about getting all the protein in. I recommend
the natural chocolate. You can get it at GNC, but I recommend doing a search on
the internet. It's a lot cheaper, even with the shipping-about 45.00 for 4.4 lb.
tub. The one with artificial and natural flavors is good too, but has an after
taste.
Thanks to everyone that has given information and shared their stories. I found
my liquid calcium, bottom buddy and other stuff from the group. I feel a
kinship with you all.

I know I have talked about this before. One minute I have insurance and the next
I don't. I am on Cobra. Bc/Bs. of Michigan. Plus I have Bc/Bs of Texas. Michigan
says I don't have insurance, which I have been paying my money to Cobra every
month in the middle of the month so they would have it before the first. Texas
won't pay cause I have Michigan. Which I understand. So today I got a call from
my surgeons office saying the doctor said if I don't get a letter from Bc/Bs
stating that I have insurance they won't do the surgery. I have to have the
letter first. They said they called Bc/Bs and was told I didn't have the
insurance.
SO after I receive that call I got on the house phone and called Bc/Bs
insurance. Than on the FAX phone I called Cobra. They both answered the same
time. I was so mad and I told Bc/Bs about the surgeon and they told me the
doctor had to call them back. I said they won't until I get a letter stating I
have insurance with them. Cobra listened to everything I had to say. I told
Michigan to FAX me a letter so I could get it into the surgeon right away. They
told me they couldn't do that. They would write a letter to me. I am so mad over
this deal.
I called my surgeons office and told them they are suppose to call Michigan
again and they would tell them I had insurance and the office told me they
wouldn't do it. I had to have a letter and they hung up on me. I call this a
real business.
I am the one who pays and everyone treats you like SHIT. They make me feel like
oh well she will just get mad and leave us along. They don't know me very well.
When I know I am right I stick with it. I feel like calling the insurance back
up and giving them hell again.

I had the diabetes and since surgery I have stopped taking the insulin
because it would make my sugar plunge so bad that I woke up once so weak that if
my
fiancee, who is a nurse, hadn't been here I don't know what I would have done.
The sugar readings are always normal. I can pretty much eat and an hour later
still have normal readings. I cut out the glucophage XR 500mg. that I took
four in the p.m. every day. I remember once saying, when I was pre-op that I
didn't know If I could stand the idea of taking vitamins every day for the rest
of my life...and someone in one of the groups said...well, would you rather
take the prescription medicine that could affect your liver and things? The
answer was pretty clear. I sleep so much better now also. I have to find another
GP
though since my doctor I had has moved but I can't wait till on my chart is
says..."Diabetes-Cured!" And I have heard of it happening.

bruise from the blood pressure cup(automactic one). The nursed asked

Gang,
Have any of you experienced the joy of kidney stones post op? Is this a result
of the drastic diet change or just coincidence? I have had 2 in the past 8
days...the fist hit me last saturday and the second one on monday. Monday's
landed me in the hospital as an inpatient and I ended up in surgery tuesday to
have the smaller of the twins removed and stents placed in each ureter (I had a
stone on each side). I will have the bigger twin removed this wed. in surgery
again and hopefully both stents removed at the same time. I hope they will pull
them as I have been bleeding heavily since their placement and it's getting a
bit annoying not to mention irritating to my skin.
I had stones pre-GBS but my last encounter was 13 years ago when I was pregnant.
I was also told I have calcifications in both kidneys and the Dr made it sound
like it was slightly concerning..."something to keep an eye on" I believe was
what he said....

Hi folks,
I saw my nutritionist last week for a pre-op counseling session and
she told me that the average weightloss after RNY surgery is from
10lbs to 20lbs per month. It seems from reading the posts that it
varies even more than for some of you. I was wondering what your
surgeons or nutritionists told you to expect and if its been
accurate.
Hope you're all having a good weekend!

Hi Jamie,
Make sure you take some chapstick with alot of emollient, you arent
allowed anything to drink the first day and your lips will get very dry. If you
are allowed water, do not swallow, it will make you sick. I know my nurses were
leary of letting me have it but I assured them I would not swallow. I kept a
spit out cup on the table in front of me and it was wonderful to be able to wet
my mouth. I also took my own gowns. The hospital jobs don't get it and a
robe. Alot of people take their own pillows. A walkman or cd player and cd's. I
also took shampoo and hair dryer. Wet wipes for hygiene. Toothbrush from home.
Non skid house shoes. This is all I can remember for now. Anyone else have any
suggestions?

Hi Frankie,
Diuretics do remove excess water but you have to increase your water intake for
this to happen -- even pre-op. If you don't increase your water intake
[preferably 10-12 glasses a day] diuretics cause dehydration which can be a
constant fight for people with the gastric bypass. Dehydration was in large
type font on my diet from the dietician while I was in the hospital. It's a
concern for me. It's also something both my PCP and surgeon mentioned.
Fortunately, my PCP cared enough to share that with me and ask the surgeon to
respond. Unfortunately, my surgeon has given me three different answers each
time I bring it up to him. I'm going back to my PCP [the one who prescribed
it]. I know I'm dehydrated and she'll take me off them, especially since I'm
already on two other blood pressure medications. There is no way I can get the
increased water levels in that you need when taking the diuretic I am
prescribed. Pre-op, I was drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day and going
constantly to the bathroom. I'm lucky now if I can get in 6 glasses. I've
almost stopped going to the bathroom which is not good. Thanks so much for your
input.

Alicia,
What some people forget is this surgery is not a miracle cure. It is a
tool that has to be used accordingly. If you continue to eat...well the weight
will return. I know a woman like that myself. She went through all the pain of
surgery and healing, got pregnant, gained over a hundred pounds and is still
fighting to get it off. You also need to remember there is a "window" that you
will lose the most weight in. You cannot let food rule your life. When you
feel you are going to eat, then call someone, pick up a book, go for a walk, get
a hobbie you enjoy, ride a bike, do anything but put that food in your mouth!
We are human and we will falter but we have to get back up and get back on
course. If it is something you think you just have to have...chew it and spit it
out. I know alot of people have different opinions about this but this is the
one that I go by. You just have to remember...ITS A TOOL.

We Are suppose to use calcium citrarte.
Jill H.
I was reading a post about the citrate in the group and wanted to pass on a
little tidbit of info. Since the vitamins are so essential for us now none of
us want to be taking them and find out later we did something wrong. Well if
you take a multivitamin with iron , or an iron tablet, make sure you take it
either a hour or two before or after the citrate or it will cancel out the
calcium which as we all know is vital to us. Just thought I would pass this
along. I
keep talking to some who didn't know it. I had to learn through my nutrition

If you are driving up to Broward anyway, you might want to try US Bariatrics
(Dr. Marema). He is one of the best in the nation. He goes to other places
and trains other doctors. He is out East at Holy Cross Hospital, but he was
awesome. If you want to email me, feel free

I think it's a great idea if the syrups are sugar free. For me it would
have been too much work post op. But I think alot of people would have felt
up to it.

Hi I caught a snow cone maker on clearance at Wal-Mart for $10.
You may want to check there.

Hi again!
I've been wondering about something. Since people have said that, early on when
you
can't have anything but clear liquids, they rely on ice chips and sugar-free
popsicles,
has anyone considered sugar-free sno-cones? The idea struck me last night and I
am
thinking of grabbing a sno-cone maker off eBay. Instead of the usual sugary
concoctions, though, I'd like to get the sugar-free syrups made by Torani and
DaVinci. They're made with Splenda and usually used for coffee and Italian ices.
Plus,
you get all these great flavors you *can't* get with popsicles--hazelnut,
vanilla,
coconut, chocolate, mocha, mango, and so on.
What do you think? I think it's a terrific idea and a great consolation for
post-ops who
are missing their yummy sweets. Discuss. : )

november so i called the cleveland clinic. thanks for answering my questions.
I believe you are referring to the Laproscopy. I had it done July 17. I had
two small incisions on both sides of my abdomen and one across my belly button
for the camera. They healed quickly and so did I. ;)

I take a water pill every day. My GP said for me to take it up to the surgery
than I won't need it after the surgery. Only to take one allergy pill a day
after the surgery. I will have to stay on the allergys pills for the rest of my
life. But at least this surgery will help my asthma.

Has anyone had any bad experience taking diuretics for high blood pressure and
our gastric bypass surgery causing dehydration? I was on diuretics before the
surgery -- my GP told me they would dehyrdrate me -- yet my surgeon's assistant
says there is nothing wrong. Any advice would be appreciated.
