2008-05-31 15:00:54

The dr. you recommended Dr. Rosenthal isn't available till December but the
other doctor that works with him is available Tuesday, should I be worried?
Does this mean no one what's him as their surgeon?
Are there any important questions I should ask the doctor that people usually
forget to ask because there so nervous?
What is the name of the surgery that doesn't require you to be opened up? It's
small incisions on both sides of your stomach?

I don't contribute much but I read your posts every day. I am 8 months
out of surgery. Had a checkup with my PCP yesterday. He called this
morning. I have lost 90 lbs so far which is sort of slow compared to others
but the results of my blood tests were fantastic!! My cholesterol started at
550 it is now 190. My triglycerides were over 700, they are now 130.
Iron, B12 and calcium were all normal range and my blood sugar was down to
110. Just wanted to share how wonderful life gets when you just hang in
there!!!

Re: hooray!!!

Congrats Joyce!
90 lbs. is awesome & even better is the GREAT improvement on your
blood tests. Unfortunately my doc and I forgot to add cholesterol to
my pre-op blood tests so I don't have a base - your turnaround is
astounding! Good for you...
I am 30 days out today and have lost 33 lbs. I am having a hard time
with the emotional side of this surgery: I hate the liquid diet and
I am mourning the loss of food. Reading your post tonight made me
feel happy that I can look forward to my health improving so much...
Just checking in before bed so goodnight and good losing!

Diruetics and gastric bypass

2008-05-30 09:01:12

Has anyone had any bad experience taking diuretics for high blood pressure and
our gastric bypass surgery causing dehydration? I was on diuretics before the
surgery -- my GP told me they would dehyrdrate me -- yet my surgeon's assistant
says there is nothing wrong. Any advice would be appreciated.

Deb D
Thank you for writing. I am a nurse and thats probably where I got it.
The thing, of course, is HOW LONG I've had it. My doctor is kinda being
a jerk and just trying to be fatherly and say "it'll be fine" but I know
different. If I got it 15 years ago, it might not be so fine! I cant
even get him to answer if we've ever DONE another Hep C on me. I know we
have done liver functions several times and there was nothing to freak
about. God, I am scared.
As you know liver disease is basically a nutritional disease and you
know I just had the RNY......malabsorptive......I know I should probably
just try to relax until the other tests come in but .....it is for sure
I have been exposed to it and the blood levels (ALT and ALP) are
elevated.

Re: hospital stay

2008-05-26 19:02:44

Hi Becky,
Form what I have seen, the usual stay is about 3-4 days for open,
usually a little less for lap. I was an exception, I was in for 6
days (I couldn't wait to get out of there!)I had a longer surgery, my
liver was really big and hard to work around, so I they wanted to be
cautious with me. I stayed out of work for 6 weeks, even though my
job isn't very physically demanding. Looking back, I'm glad I did, I
went through a lot of emotional stuff during that time, and I got
tired fast. My advice is to plan to take as much time as you can. If
you feel up to going back to work sooner, its easier to do that, then
to try to get your time off extended.

Re: One week appt/Angie

No, Angie, I didn't need any antibiotics. With the steri-strips came healing
although my left side is still sore. I thought at first this was because my
ribs were bruised but I saw someone else post about the camera insertion. The
nurse during my stay stated that everyone complains about their left upper side
so maybe that is where the camera went in. I don't know. All I know is that is
the slowest area to heal so I'm now using neosporin on it and it is scabbing
over and the pain has decreased dramatically. Every other incision has scabbed
over and is healing nicely. I go to my first surgeon visit tomorrow. I'll see
what he says about the healing.

Hey Chris -
Got my staples out in the hospital before I went home then my surgeon
put steri strips and glue on...a few days later my incision came
apart in 2 places - so deep it looked like I had 2 new belly buttons -
gross! (sorry folks). My doc stitched me up for a week then I was
ok. I took extra good care of my wound after getting the stitches
out by taking 2 showers a day, leaning back and letting the water hit
the spots/washing with soap also. I had gross oozing but now it's
all gone & the wounds are scabbed over. He also put me on antibiotic
(Cipro 1st but it gave me the runs then Augmentin)for 10 days. Should
you be on antibiotic to stave off infection? Hang in there.

BOOBS

2008-05-24 01:55:32

I only have 33 more days to go. I had a doctor appointment with my allergist. He
told me he didn't want me to have the surgery cause of my asthma. But the
doctor thought I should have breast reduction and that would solve my problems
with my breathing. He said I wasn't over weight just big boobs. Come on give me
a break. With all this weight I am carrying around and I am not OVERWEIGHT? IT
ISN'T ALL MY BOOBS!!! I just told the doctor My hubby likes my boobs this way.
And I went to a Plastic Surgery and talked to him and he told me that the only
thing he could see right now is a tummy tuck after surgery. I left his office.
The woman out front told me that she told her dad about the surgery and she was
hoping he would go and get it done. I think everyone in the office heard me tell
the doctor.
I went to the hospital to meet a friend from here that just had WLS done. She is
doing great. Tracey ask me if I was ready to have this done and I said I sure
am. I never wanted anything in my life like I do WLS. I told her to keep the bed
warm for me. Cause I would be here. The nurse told me they would bring in two
fans for me. Cause it was so hot in her room. They had one going. Tracey has
the same doctor I am going to have. I am glad I went to the hospital. Now I know
I can handle this surgery. I know it is going to hurt but I am hurting right
now. I can't lay down cause of my knees hurting or walk with them hurting.
I didn't really want to go up to see her but I had to be in Traverse City on
errands. And 2 of the errands was the Doctors offices right next to the hospital
and one of the errands was in the Hospital. So I think it was the Good Lord told
me to go. And I think she need alittle support too. We talked for a hour and I
had to get going on the rest of my errands. She was very tired. (Surgery was
10/08/03). My hubby told me he was glad I went and seen her. This way I really
knew what was going on. I am ready for the surgery now. Thank you Tracey for the
talk and being a friend on here and in person. I know we will be friends n
Mancelona. Hope you have a speedy recovery. We will lose together.

Bad news for me

2008-05-20 12:29:23

Dear Ann,
I knew I had seen a post a few weeks ago about Hep C and couldn't remember
who posted it. My husband has Hep C. He was diagnosed in 1994 (a year
after we got married) when he tried to donate blood for his aunt who was
having surgery and his blood was checked. He has been on several courses of
treatment (mostly interferon) and, at this point, it is dormant.
We figure that he got it when he was three (he's 47 now) when he had a car
accident and had to have blood transfusions, or he got it from a needlestick
when he was working as an aide in the E.R. of our local hospital. In either
case, he's got it.
From what I've read, it can lay dormant where you won't notice anything
wrong at all for forty years... Other than a few minor modifications, he
has not had to change his lifestyle at all. Feel free to write me any time.
I wish you the best of luck.

I have friends, man and wife, in Vermont who both have it. I was told I had
it once by a doc I was seeing and I was terrified and after 2 years I finally
went back and he sent me to a specialist who confirmed that the doc was WRONG
and that it was a false positive test and they redid my tests to be sure and
they were definately negative for hep c, Thank God, But I know you must be
scared, I was ssooo scared and always thought the worst of it but Thank God
nowadays they have such Great Medication for it to keep you healthy, you can
still
live a long healthy happy life with it. My friends Tammy and Earl are both well,
he did have heart surgery for clogged arteries but it was not related to the
hep c, They think Tammy may have gotten it from a blood transfusion she had
when she was a child, she is 41 now. I hope and pray all goes well for you. Do
alot of research but don't go all by what the internet tells you becuase they
always have alot of half-truths on it too. Take care and God Bless,

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Pre-op Diet

2008-05-18 15:36:29

My original surgeon wanted me to lose 40 pounds, so I got a new
surgeon…the stress of losing the weight was making me do the opposite.
My original surgeon when I asked for help (medication, etc.), he just said
“go on a liquid diet 3 weeks prior to the surgery”. I just got my
new date with my new surgeon and don’t have the stress of losing anything
and he is gonna do it LAP. I am a stress eater and am stressed about the
surgery, everything I have to do with work, home, etc before surgery….I
couldn’t go to sleep last night until 2:00 a.m. and I ate a small pizza
before I went to sleep I was so stressed out….I am not really helping am
I…..sorry! But I know what you are going through…guess that was
the point of my e-mail….I have 3 weeks before my surgery…so I need
to find a more constructive way to deal with the stress or else…..I will
gain 20 pounds instead of losing…keep your chin up….probably best
thing is to keep your chin up…if you fail, jump right back on the band
wagon so to speak….good luck!

meal replacement shakes

2008-05-18 15:15:03

okay,i haven't been on in almost a week,so i am sorry to just barge in like
that.
i have a question about the protein meal replacement shakes everybody is
drinking.the ones i bought taste good, but they are for 16 oz of water.they are
from GNC and are called MEGA MRP.i could do one of them per day no problem, but
it
is hard to get TWO of them down each and every day.GNC said they don't really
have any 8 oz shakes, only 12 oz and 16 oz.so my question is,what kind of
shakes do you guys buy and drink, and where do you buy them?is there another
store
out there other than GNC where i could look for shakes?i don't mind ordering
online, but i don't want to wait a week to get those things.
thanks!!!

My surgeon ordered me to lose 14 lbs pre-op so that he has room to

Needless to say, this is a huge problem. I am going to the gym 3

Jessica,
How long have you been on the liquid diet? Did you have coaxing to eat the
chicken and shrimp or did you just want it? I would identify why you ate and go
from there. Those could be some food issues you may be dealing with down the
road. Just to safeguard that after surgery you don't backslide. Second of
all...falling off the wagon isn't a great thing, but don't beat yourself up over
it. Then the depression, from my experience, may be another reason to be
comforted by food. I would just start all over asap(or continue on your liquid
diet)and put forth your best effort.Take care and I hope you feel better,

Hi Joyce,
I'm sure you've all heard of this before now, but I just used an old
wooden spoon to assist me with "bathroom needs" after surgery. It
didn't cost me a thing (my mom had an old one around). I don't know
how much the "stick" cost, but I thought I'd give my 2 cents. It
worked great and once I was done with it, I just threw it out.
Hope this helps!

Re: Food Tastes Crummy?

2008-05-11 20:01:06

Hi Candi;
I experienced food not tasting normal for awhile after surgery. I'm
about 11 weeks out now and food taste ok, but my taste buds haven't
fully returned to before surgery status and I doubt it ever will. I
know that's not what you wanted to hear, but I honestly think it has
to do with me having a new stomach and not really with my taste
buds. Because our stomachs have changed and my attention while
eating is now focused elsewhere since the surgery. I'm still trying
to find that happy medium with eating. I find it hard to eat and
it's more a chore now, but again I can deal with this. I have
honestly never been happier in my life and I'm losing a ton of
inches and it hasn't even been 3 months yet. I'm down to a 1x top
and a size 20 pants. I started at 3x tops and 26 pants. Things
will get better, just keep focused on your goal.
Take care,

I would be concerned about a doctor's office who can't return calls. What
if something happens after the surgery and you need to reach someone. Have
you looked around to see if there is some other Dr. in the surrounding areas
(maybe within an hour or two).
I am about 90 mins away form my doc.
How long before you see the doctor depends entirely on your doctor. Mine
had almost a year wait to be evaluated. That isn't the norm it was just my
doctor's case load. After I saw him it was another month for the insurance
approval and then a few weeks for the surgery.

Hi Everyone,
Yesterday was the 2 month anniversary of my open RNY. I am down 44
lbs, and happy with that. It's an average of almost 6 pounds a
week. I can deal with that. If I can keep that or close to it up,
I'll his my goal of being 200 lbs or less by Christmas. So far I've
dropped about 2 shirt sizes and at least 3 pant sizes and need to
shop. This weekend we went to visit our daughter at college and I
decided I needed a new MTU sweatshirt. I was able to take a LARGE!!
(Ok, so they're cut big it still says large on the tag.) I try to
swim to days a week and walk the other days. I also lift weights
everyother day and hope to get to the fitness center once a week to
work out on thier machines. So far I've had no complications or
regrets. Thanks for listening (reading?).

Sue,
I think it's a toss up depending on your surgeon and your insurance company. My
surgeon tries to schedule surgery within six months of your consult. Constance
Sue <suzcar@...
Just curious to know about how long it takes from the time you have
your first consultation with your surgeon until you they actually
schedule your surgery? A few weeks, months??

Welcome to all the Newcomers!

Hiya everyone!
I thought I would make a general all around universal "HELLO!" and "WELCOME!"
to allthe newcomers to this group. It's easier for me than to try to say
hello singly to each and everyone of you...and am sort of regretful for that. I
hope you all find what you wish here, learn and grow in friendships!
Be well, take care, much love!

Hang in there Steve, Friday is almost here. Have you started
counting time left in hours or minutes yet. Someone at work keeps
joking with me, because I was counting days. He than converted it to
hours for me and I have 1 1/2 weeks left. Oh well lol.

Re: How long?

2008-05-07 07:58:04

It depends on many, many things...but my initial visit was in
December, and I had surgery May 12. Others are quicker...still
others wait much longer. Sorry this isn't very helpful. You might
ask your doctor's staff to offer you a ballpark timeframe--assuring
them, of course, that you won't get mad if they're off a bit! TJ

FRIDAY IS GETTING CLOSER,,,AND i AM SO READY,,,
this waiting is tearing me up,,I dread this worse than
the surgery,,LOL,,,Steve

Is everyone on here hoping for 150

2008-05-06 03:52:44

I told my doctor that all I wanted to get down to was 150 lbs. And I read on
here a lot of people only want to get down to 150 lbs. I told my hubby I haven't
seen 150 since Grade school. LOL. That is bad. I told the doctor I believe I was
born 100 lbs. So really how many of us our there want to see that mark. I know I
sure do. I would settle for my idea weight but 150 looks good to me. I would be
satified with it.

Carol,
Congratulations on your new date! That's spooktacular news.....SORRY I couldn't
help that. My brothers b-day is the 30th so I'm used to making wise cracks.
Seriously, though, you have to be on cloud 9.That's great, Constance

Susan
Sounds like you are doing very well and all normal. It is very typical
for a new post op to have no desire for food and also to have trouble
getting liquids down. This went on for me about - oh, 5-6 weeks! (Late
bloomer! ) Now at 2.5 monthes out, I do get hunger but fluids satisyfy
me and I still dont really look forward to eating. I have to force
myself.
If water bothers you, can you tolerate diet drinks like Propel and
non-soda other diet drinks? Or do all fluids make you burp? I remember
doing a lot of that - it was usually because I was drinking too fast.
Now I can drink fairly quickly. I use a straw - I know for some that
i9ncreases the burps but not me.

Insurance/Kris/Cindy

Kris,
I also have BCBS PPO of Illinois. With my insurance it also says it doesn't
cover obesity surgery. When I called them they said that they do cover gastric
bypass. Mobidly obese is another catagory and of course all comorbidities help.
I'm just waiting for approval now. I'm keepin my fingers crossed.
Cindy,
10 children. It takes an awful special person to be able to care for 10
children, let alone those with special needs. You must have patience beyond
belief and a heart of gold. I had a friend who cared for special needs children
and had several of their own. She enjoyed every minute of it. I think that's
wonderful, Best of luck Constance
Kris A <babyfemmey@...
Hi Cindy,
I have BCBS PPO in California and my policy listed "Surgery
Related to Obesity" in the exclusions but they still
approved me after one letter. I went last Tuesday for my
eval with the surgeon and they approved me on Friday!
If it's deemed medically necessary, you should be ok. And
that's determined by BMI and comorbidities, which I'm sure
you've researched. My BMI is 48 and I have minor
comorbidities, nothing big.
Good luck,
Kris

Hi! I'm new to the group and I have a question. Have any
of you had
your insurance list "treatment of obesity such as gastric
bypass
surgery" specifically stated in the exclusions, but
gotten it ok'd
anyway?

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] 1 year anniversary

2008-05-05 03:26:09

Marion,
I wanted to take the opportunity to say hello and congratulations on your
weightloss success. I also noticed you were from Colorado Springs, I live in
Calhan.
I love posts like yours. As a matter of fact I will have my husband read it. We
are both pre-op and he recently decided (in August) that he wanted this for
himself as well. In a way I think he just kind of jumped on the band wagon
without realizing that this surgery will change his life forever. I have
prepared myself the best that I can by searching out any information I can. You
take care , Constance
Marion <marion@...
I just wanted to share with a group that would understand my excitement,
sadness, humbleness, etc. that tomorrow is my one year anniversary since open
RNY. I started at 277 and am now 141. It has been a long and winding road with
many positive and well frustrating experiences. However, I would not change any
of it. I have grown into a much stronger person. I see life through a very
different lens and am so grateful that I have had this experience. I have shed
many tears today over the incredible transformation that has occurred. I know
that there will be many more obstacles and gifts that will occur. However, I
just wanted to share that I am grateful to have a group of people to share with
my excitement for what has occurred in the last year.

I called my Insurance Provider and asked them if WLS surgery is
covered under my plan and they told me it's only covered if you are
morbidly obese with a bmi higher than 40 (that's me) so I am making
an appointment to see my doctor ASAP to get the ball rolling!
Finally there's HOPE!

Chris and Leah, I am going to have the surgery November 12. I can't wait to tell
you the truth. I live in Michigan. I have to have greenfield in this month Oct.
24. I am more worried about it than the Big L. That day I will be reborn.

Hi Just a thought.
My daughter is lactose intolerent and we found a milk product
called "Dairy Ease" Its a whole milk based product without the
lactose. She is handling this very well. I even tried it to see what
it tasted like. It tastes just like milk.
Just thought I would shre this...maybe you can give this a try.
