new to group - Preop

2008-04-30 20:41:17

Hi everyone! I love all the information and support given here! What
a wonderful group of people - I am looking forward to getting to know
you all more!! I am 34, married with 3 kids & a dog :-), love to
scrapbook and Spend time with friends. I have been doing WSL
research for about a year and a half and I was most of the way thru
with my requirements under Group Health of Wa.and My husband just got
a new job and we had to move to ORegon and I just found out Group
health will not cover us under cobra as of 10/31/03, so we are
looking for other insurance. UUUGH!! We probably will end up with
Blue Crosss/shield. I am wondering if there is anyone also in oregon
with BC/BS that might have some helpful tips for me. Also if anyone
lives in or around the portland area and goes to a support group. I
live in Dayton which is about 30 miles from Portland. Feel free to
email me : shelmail1969@...

It's over, and I'm fine.

2008-04-30 14:08:30

I wrote earlier in the week because I was having the surgery on the
3rd. Well, all went well and I've been home since Sunday. I'm
trying to take it easy but actually felt so good Monday that I
cleaned house....lightly of course....and went to my son's football
practice. Well, dumb move cause it hit me hard today. I was having
problems with getting dizzy. I realized that even with the surgery
only eating two popcicles a day isn't enough so I have gone back to
the basics and am forcing myself to eat. I started feeling better
about noon. The problem I'm having now is I don't have any urge to
eat. Not a low urge...NO urge. I have to constantly force it.
Also, I have a little trouble with water. It makes me burp
constantly, even taking tiny sips. But tea doesn't do that to me.
What can I change to get the water down? Plus, when does the urge
to eat come back so that you don't feel like you're forcing it
down? I am only 4 days post op and still on a liquid diet. I think
I'm most surprized at how little pain there is (gall bladder still
intact). Thanks for the words of encouragment while I was in the
hospital. Susan California

Re: Thank you.

2008-04-30 10:47:22

question for you, what is OT.. I don't post often in the group, read
messages everyday, and have just started the long long process toward
the acutal WLS... probably a year away... everyone has been wonderful
here and I've gotten lots of information. Janice

I wanted to thank all of you for being my support over the last 8
weeks or so. I have learned a lot from you all and made to feel so
very welcome right from the beginning. But, I need a group who
better don't mind OT's. It's obviously not welcomed here. Not that
that is bad and all it's not. Ya'll are just very focused on
supporting each other with WLS and only topics regarding WLS.
Everyone, good luck with your surgeries and recoveries. Bless you
all for what you do here to help each other out.

1 year anniversary

2008-04-29 15:45:48

I just wanted to share with a group that would understand my excitement,
sadness, humbleness, etc. that tomorrow is my one year anniversary since open
RNY. I started at 277 and am now 141. It has been a long and winding road with
many positive and well frustrating experiences. However, I would not change any
of it. I have grown into a much stronger person. I see life through a very
different lens and am so grateful that I have had this experience. I have shed
many tears today over the incredible transformation that has occurred. I know
that there will be many more obstacles and gifts that will occur. However, I
just wanted to share that I am grateful to have a group of people to share with
my excitement for what has occurred in the last year.

hi,
i had a dr appt today and the NP said she pretty sure it was the milk like
you said - she said start with skim or 1% and sslowly work my way up. i have
been living on mylanta gas X --- i also had 2 lap sites that had the knot on
the outside and had to be clipped - they were not healing well and starting
to look infected so they should be OK now - the rest i can hardly see. i
lost 2 1/2 lbs since the visit there a week ago - i'm almost to the 10 lb
mark and i hope that is just the beginning - everyone there seems surprised
that i'm doing so well - i'm not sure what they expected but i was 263 going
in -- i almost want to ask them why would they expect i wouldn't be doing
good.
thanks for the encouragement !!

Hi Everyone, , Newgirl here in CA

2008-04-28 06:16:41

Wanted to say "hello" to everyone.
I am amazed at how much great information is here!
I am in the process of waiting for insurance clearance for the RNY.
I have a Surgery Date set for Dec 2, but that all depends on the
insurance clearance.
BTW, does anyone have any experience with Anthem Blue Cross Blue
shield? I am in pins and needles not knowing if they are going to
give me the okay.
Also, how many days did everyone take off from work after the
surgery?
Cheers,
Linda

My only regret is I didnt do the surgery sooner........I know just how
you feel and so does everyone else on this board. It is a life-changing
and life saving procedure and nowadays has a very low incidence of major
problems (tho of course they do happen). Your library may have books on
the subject - just march up and ask where they are, also Carnie Wilson
wrote two books about her own wls surgery which are good. The internet
is chock full of info - there are a LOT of us!!! Try ObesityHelp.com
Its a wonderresource, even has a doctor list.

I haven't posted in a while. Tomorrow I go to see my Physician. To get
my blood work results and get a diet history. I hope he will give me
one. I never had a good update of keep going back to a Dr. when on a
diet. Also I'm not sure how he feels about wls. I have tryed so many
times to diet but nothing seems to work. I get so hungry. The next
step for me is the psychological evaluation next month. Then they will
send it to my insurance. Which is going to be a fight. They say there
is an exclusion to my policy. I'm not going to go down that easy. I
have to fight for this. Is there any body out there that had an
exclusion to there policy and won?? Thank you Char

Re: jealousy problem

2008-04-26 00:25:52

Dear Frank,
What an awesome man you are. Your girlfriend is lucky, as are you, that you
have each other. That being said, let me tell you that recently my husband
has been giving me a hard time. He's been picking on me and making
comments. The other day I just sat down with him and asked him what the
problem was (he has difficulty expressing himself, unlike you). He finally
got to the point and told me that he thought I was losing weight so I could
leave him. He's been jealous of all the attention I've been getting. I
reassured him that I love him and that it's him I want to be with and no one
else (we're going to be married ten years in December).
What you need to do, I suggest, is talk to your girlfriend and explain how
you are feeling. Make sure she understands that you're not doubting her
faithfulness and that you trust her, but that you're having this anxiety
over the jealousy you feel when seeing other men looking at or paying
attention to her. Make sure that your feelings for her and her feelings for
you are mutual and as good as you feel they are. Once you have reassured
each other, it really shouldn't matter how other people are looking at her.
She can't do anything to control that and she doesn't need to get
confrontational about it (as in, "stop looking at me!" or anything like
that).
I get a lot of excess attention now from many strange sources (including a
brother-in-law who told me at his son's wedding, "Deb, I wouldn't throw you
outta bed!") and I just think it's a scream. Sometimes I just roar with
laughter at the whole situation. People who wouldn't give me the time of
day in the past can't wait to start a conversation with me now. I think
it's hysterical. I don't do anything at all to encourage it and I do not
play headgames with my husband, so I only work on changing the things I can
(myself) and I don't worry about the rest.
I'm sure when you speak to your girlfriend, you will have the reassurances
you need to keep this in perspective and to see it for the humorous
situation that it really is. Good luck to both of you.

Hi everyone...I'm new and scared

2008-04-24 17:00:18

Hi everyone. My name is Shenise and I live in Atlanta. I knew I had
to do something when a guy I was seeing told me no one wanted someone
fat. I became embarrassed to be seen and nothing fit right. After
starting a walking program 3 months ago and losing 10 pounds only to
regain 22 pounds, I went to a doctor for a breast reduction at the
suggestion of my PCP. My breasts are a DDD and hurt my back. He told
me I was too fat for a breast reduction and suggested gastric bypass
surgery. I had heard of it and did a little research. I even
attempted to get an appointment with an Atlanta surgeon, but he kept
losing my paperwork. This is a different surgeon and the office
seems nice and friendly. I don't know what to epect, but I know I
don't want to be fat anymore.

Debbie R, WI
Thanks to you for replying to my post, believe me, I feel just like
your husband when it comes to the pride I feel, not only because of
her new look, but because of the person I know is inside that lovely
lady next to me.
Sometimes I feel I should talk to her about my feelings, but then I
start to worry that she might not understand my feelings, or that I
might not be able to explain them clearly. I think the next step for
me might have to be some counseling, because I really don't want this
to get out of hand and destroy the best relationship I've had in my
life.
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me,
Frank

Hi all,
I post every now and then. Well, I have my Psych eval tomorrow and
am a little nervous. I dont know what to expect are what he is going
to ask. I have to have this done before my dr will schedule my
surgury. I went Fri and got my surgury rlease letter from my PCP and
he says everything looks great.
I was told by one person that he went and saw a diff psych and all
he done was answer a 150 questionare.
Has anyone else had to do this and if so What did the dr ask?
Thanks...

Re: Frank

debkroll of Iowa,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my post, I do trust her, and I
am proud that she is with me, plus I have no doubt that she will stay
with me even after she reaches her goals, but what is bothering me is
what I don't want to become.
We have not had any fights about it, and I have not made her aware of
my feelings, but I have noticed that my reactions to the obvious
admiration of other men have been getting stronger, and it scares me
because I don't want to reach a point where we might have fights
about it, because it's not her fault, and it's not something that she
is doing differently, or intentionally. Like that country song says,
she don't know she is beautiful, but I do.
Thanks again for your reply.

excess skin removal

2008-04-23 18:36:54

Hello everyone,
I wanted to give everyone an update. I had my 1 year appointment on
2nd of October. We talked about skin removal. I have to work on a
few things first. After talking with everyone I have learned that I
am not eating enough. I have to get my protiens up more, drink, and
eat, eat, eat. That is really difficult. I have promised that I
will do that. I have been really working hard at that. I know it
has only been a few days but I can do this. I go back on the 6th of
Novemeber. At that time we are going to take pictures and submit to
the insurance for the tummy tuck. I also have a hernia that will
have to be repaired. I have complete confidence in Dr Cooney. He
has been my life saver. He has given me this tool and helped me
become a healthier person. I think I am anyway.
My question to everyone is: If I want more skin removal than just a
tummy tuck, do I go to a plastic surgeon from the beginning or does
it not matter? I am sure not looking to be a model or anything like
that. I just want to be able to wear shorts in the summer without
the extra skin flapping and slapping. I want to have a stomache that
doesn't stick out. What advice do you have for me?
I did make my first goal. I am very excited. I know after the skin
removal that will take me down a little more.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Loretta

Frank,
It's great that you are so honest and aware with your feelings. My husband
stated that the thought crossed his mind that after I had surgery and lost
weight, I might find another man. The fact is that we've been married 21 years
and he's loved me through thin and fat. I feel that if any man who's interested
after I loose weight, but wasn't before, isn't really interested in me. Anyway,
When my husband came with me to my 2 week check up, he swore the other man in
the elevator was "checking me out' (Yeah right, I was still over 250 lbs.) He
said he was proud to have me on his arm, and felt like saying, "Too bad, she's
mine" He used to feel this way when we were younger as well. So. I guess my
advice is to be confident in your realtionship and instead of jealousy, feel
Pride that she is with you!!!

I think it's wonderful for you too ask questions.Your a Great man to
number one Ask for help. You said she loves you and you love her. That
such say it all.She did the surgery I'm sure to make her feel better
& healthier and make you proud of her.I would sit down and talk to
her and ask her true feeling for you.I'm Know if you both are in
Love with each other NO man would get in your way.I know its hard
becuz the men turn their heads and look but that should make you
feel Wonderful that your the lucky one to be holding her hand as you
walk not them.So if you feel like your losing her ask and talk
things over and it will easy the mind. Also if your really in Love
ask her to marry you.Maybe she wanting that too.I wish you both the

Jealousy Problems

2008-04-21 21:13:09

Hello to all,
I'm a lurker. I joined this group a while back, when my girlfriend
started thinking about having the surgery so I could learn more about
it, and help her in the process, some of the posts have been very
helpful to me in understanding what she is going through, but at this
moment, I need more support that she does. She had her surgery in
April and since then has lost a total of 75 lbs, and is only about 30
lbs away from her goal, and she looks great! Which brings me to my
problem.
I have always found her to be a beautiful woman, inside and out, I
never minded the layers of fat, as she called them, and I loved and
love her no matter what, I always thought she was very attractive.
The problem is that now I'm not the only one who finds her attractive
and that is killing me.
She is a very sexy girl always was, and I hope always will be, I love
that about her, only problem is that now when we walk down the street
the men who did not take a second look at her before, now do, and
totally stare. Lately I feel as if she is getting younger because of
her extra energy and new look, and I feel old next to her. I don't
want to loose this woman, she is the love of my life, and I know I
will not find anyone like her no matter how hard I look.
It's not that I feel that she will leave me, because I know she loves
me just as much as I love her, but I'm afraid my jealousy will take
the best of me and turn our relationship into a mutual nightmare, I
don't want to turn into a possessive, jealous and paranoid boyfriend,
but all this attention on her is driving me crazy!
I'll take help from either men or women, all I want is for somebody
to tell me if they have gone through this, and how they have handled
it.
Thank you,
Frank

Dr. today just to use his scale - down 5 more lbs! Yippee! I walk
every day and today I took the longest walk so far (25mins) and I'm

3miles/day or more - I can't imagine doing that but then again, I
never thought I could lose 33 lbs in 26 days!

Bone density test was a piece of sugar free cake

2008-04-19 14:44:35

yes, a food analogy.
anyway, the test was just a few minutes in duration, the tech stayed
in the room the entire time. when i interrogated her re the radiation
involved, she stated that the test uses LESS radiation than a dental
x-ray. not bad!! the machine measured the density of my spinal
column & hip bones. didn't even have to undress, just unbuckled my
jeans & relaxed, there was a nice scenic ceiling tile to look at.
the results will be used as a baseline, & no, i'm not menopausal nor
do i have any risk factors other than post-operative malabsoption.
in the graduate group, i've read about bone loss by long term posties,
though many many other variables may be involved, i suspect.

re: drinking when eating

2008-04-19 04:50:35

Hi all,
Here's my understanding of eating and drinking. Think of
what happens when you put a hot dog bun in a glass of
water. The bun pretty much dissolves. (I learned this
yesterday when I burned toast and had to throw it in the
sink to stop the fire alarm. :-) )That's what happens if
you eat a hot dog and wash it down w/ a soda or any other
liquid. So a few minutes after you drink, you could
probably handle another dog. That's the part where
drinking makes you consume more calories.
The other part is that the liquid does fast-forward the
digestion process by pushing the food through your system
faster (I think). So it's a combo of increased calories
and rushed digestion. It's just better to let your natural
digestion process take over after you eat something. Food
is meant for fuel, liquid is meant to cleanse and hydrate.
I have been trying to mentally prepare myself for the
lifestyle change and part of it is trying to look at food
and drink as purely a necessary part of the day. But I am
not a professional medical or dietary expert so take it
with a grain of salt-substitute. Ha ha
I hope this helped. Have a wonderful week everyone!! I
have my upper GI and ultrasound Friday. Had my blood tests
Saturday. Its all happening!
Yippee!
Kris
*********************
Beth, I do not think it will add calories unless you got
hungrier and ate
more. I think the whole reason not to drink during meals
and certain times before
and after is so that the necessary nutrients from the
intake of food is
absorbed as it should be without being flushed out with the
drinking. This is what
I have been told anyway. Anyone else have a different
opinion?

Bariatric Ball 2003

2008-04-17 22:51:18

Hey Everybody!
I just wanted to tell everyone about the great time I had on Saturday
night. My surgeon, Dr Bryan Freeman, puts on a ball every year for
his patients. This year it was held at the Winfrey Hotel
(translation la de da hotel, lol) in Birmingham, Alabama and my
husband and I went. It was absolutely the most beautiful and most
wonderful thing I have ever been to. Everyone was dressed to the T
in formals and tux's, they had a marvelous band and enough food to
feed an army! He even had the food sectioned out in stations with
signs on them stating how many months out this particular dish was
suitable for. They had things such as shrimp kaboobs, salmon cakes,
roasted turkey with oyster dressing, roast chicken with fried rice
and soy sauce, cheeses, fruit, spinach dip, three bean dip, etc. My
doctor even drew a name out and gave away a trip to Hawaii!!
Unfortunately I wasn't the winner but there is always next year! I
can't wait till the ball next year! By then I can wear a swanky
little dress and intend to do just that! I am going to post a
picture of me and my doctor that I took Saturday night if that is ok
with everyone. Just wanted to share the great time I had with
everyone. I feel so good after just the few pounds I have lost since
surgery! I can't imagine how good I will feel when I lose as much
some of you have!
Love to all,

Hi, I was told that the food stays in your stomach longer if you
don't drink and eat. I suppose if you are eating like soup, it
probably doesn't matter. I usually wait about 1/2 to one hour then I

getting in all that protein here's some recommendations

2008-04-16 14:13:48

I had trouble mixing up all those protein shakes so I came up with
this recipe that I thought I share. I bought large containers of
yogurt. Then I mixed up my protein powders with it. I added some
fiber such as wheat germ and instant oatmeal. I then mixed up all the
ingredients and placed them in my dehydrator. What I came up with is
sort of like a cross between a protein bar and taffy. It tastes good
and hopefully the protein is still there. Any thoughts/comments are
welcomed. The dehydrator I use it called the excalibur. The website
to purchase this dehydrator is http://www.excaliburdehydrator.com/
there are different models but I think it's a great product. I also
dry my beef jerky on this machine as well. I dry ground beef (chopped
and formed) jerky with this caulking type gun which forms the ground
beef in strips. You can find this item at http://www.nesco.com In
drying the ground beef, you need to use the leanest possible I
personally use ground sirloin with 10% fat or leaner. Any questions I
would be glad to help just email me.

Drinking when eating?

2008-04-16 00:18:41

I have been told not to drink when I eat. I was assuming that the
reason was because if I drink, the food will flush right down. But
then I was reading someones post, and it was stated that if you drink
when you eat, that will add more calories. I am very confused by
this. There have been a few times that I had a few sips during my
meal, I don't know if I am going down the wrong path with this or
not. It hasn't happened often, as I know I'm not supposed to. Can
someone enlighten me please? Thanks!!

LOL... and here I sit pouting, wondering if my weightloss will
continue. The closer I get to goal the slower and slower my
weightloss gets and at this point it is completely stalled.
To answer your question... Yes, your weightloss will likely slow down
significantly in the coming months and you will find that you need to
work harder to keep the weight from reappearing.
There are occassions where people's bodies become super efficient and
continue to lose even after they have reached their goal. The key is
to reintroduce carbs into the diet and begin drinking with meals in
order to take in more calories.
You are doing wonderfully on your weightloss so far. Congratulations.

days later I lost fifteen pounds.Today is Saturday October fifth and had the
opportunnity to weigh
myself and I have lost an additional eight pounds. I just can't believe it. I
have
not lost weight since highschool. My surgery went well.I had a bad
reaction from waking up with the ng tube still in me, but rather then that I
had no drain and no staples.I was happy to not have staples just steri strips.
I did have trouble going to the bathroom when they took out the cathedar.
Finally everything started working. I was terrified and even had a chaplain
pray for me and bless me before surgery. God was their and I felt peace.

except on the weekends.
Sooo... welcome newcomers, I continue to pray and hope for the best
for all of you seeking approvals, and hugs to all you old losers, you
know I luv ya!!!!
Ok, so here's a question about addictions. Do any of you find that
since surgery, you tend toward finding a certain food you like then
stick with it for a while? Early post op I remember being addicted
to Taco Bell pintos & cheese (sans red sauce), then around three
months post op I found a new love for Hormel Turkey Chili and ate it
for AT LEAST one meal a day, sometimes two. During the summer months
I couldn't cook dinner without making a side dish (ALWAYS made sure I
had a high protein course) out of some kind of summer squash. Now,
my latest cravings are things cooked with green chiles/jalapenos (so
I was all over Robyn's Chile/egg recipe), and *shhhhh....* Lemons.
Now, if it weren't for the fact that I go through the gammut of blood
tests every 3 months and all my levels are peachy (mmmm... peaches),
I might think that deficiencies were causing my cravings, but I don't
think this is it.
Huggers...
BTW, I'm stuck at 178 and can't move :o(

Dear Joyce:
I have been in this wheelchair since 1998. The doctor says I will still have
to use it even after losing weight. I Have a real bad back and the spinal
fluid is blocked from going all the way to the bottom of the spinal canal. Every
level of my spine is deteriorating and spurring. Since I have lost weight I
can stand up longer at a time but still can't walk but a few feet. I am going
to make a liar out of him and get out of it at least in the house. I will
probably still need it for shopping and other outing out side the house. I too
have a bad heart. I have an aorta aneurysm, Irregular heart beat. I had
diabetes, and high blood pressure before surgery but have not had to take any
medicines in over 6 months. My doctor says my diabetes is cured. I also no
longer
need acid reflux medicine.
Did I tell you that I weighed almost 400 pounds and that My doctor was able
to do a lap and I was only in hospital 2 days? I have not been sick at all and
even without my medical problems I came through with flying colors. Six days
after surgery I drove to Walmart which is about 20 miles from here and a week
and half after surgery I could not even tell I had surgery.
I have faith that you will do well also. Remember to stay positive and do
not let negative thoughts take over, just push the negative thoughts out of your
mind and DO NOT dwell on them. God will take care of you. Good luck!!!!!

Yep Val. If I had to rely on pureeing my food in a blender, I

that had previously been "chewed" by my blender it made me heave. I
just made sure I took teeny bites (using baby utensils) and chewed

Re: Hair loss remedies

2008-04-10 01:20:35

Although I never tried it, I understand that flax seed oil can help
and know a couple of people that started the supplement before their
surgery. I found Nioxin hair care products (from your beauty
supplier) stalled my hairloss (at appx 6 months) once it had already
started.
My honest opinion is that some people will be prone to losing hair
and others wont and there isn't a lot that can be done about it. I
have had numerous surgeries and found that a few months after each
one I would lose a lot of hair... understanding it was from a
combination of anesthesia and body energy going to repair the
surgical owie. As WLS patients we also have the added difficulty of
vitamin deficiency.
I know I wasn't much help, hon, but I do want to wish you luck on
your upcoming surgery and hope you get some helpful answers to your
questions.

Hair loss remedies

2008-04-09 15:42:12

Hi Everyone!
Awhile back there was talk about supplements and/or things we could do to
prevent hair loss after surgery. Shame on me, I wasn't paying attention. Is
there things we can do before surgery that would help? I am getting close to my
surgery date, and want to be as prepared as I can. Any help would be awesome.
Thanks ya'll

I'm two weeks post op and I'm not puree-ing. I keep it chopped up
and mushey and chew well. I haven't had any problems, but I'm a
little annoyed with myself for not doing it 'by the book'. Did
anyone else handle their pureed stage like this?

Angie, where abouts in Northern California are you? I'm just
beginning the process, have the referral from my doctor and received
the forms to fill out last week, will send them off next week. It
will take about a year to actually have the surgery. I'll be having
in Sacramento at UCD Med Center. Janice

Hi everyone,
I have been without a phone line (and therefore no pc access) for
over a month and it's good to be back...I know you regulars don't
know me too well - I only posted a few times. I need to tell you all
that as I was waiting for my surgery in July, August and beginning of
September I watched your posts all the time. They gave me strength,
hope and made me laugh! I had my surgery on 9/10 and it's been tough
but day by day I'm getting better. I want to thank you for being
here. I'll be checking in every day with "my people"! =}

I think the first thing anyone would want to know is if you have any co-morbity
issues
such as Diabetes , High Blood Pressure, sleep apniea.....Have you tried or does
your state have any local programs that are state run? In California, we have
lots of programs , but don't know if they would do anything at all if it weren't
life threatening.
I myself , have Kaiser , but still am having difficulties getting approved. I
have other health
issues like those listed above. Good luck my friend- I really hope you find what
you are looking for.

weight loss?? I do not have health insurance and can't even get
insurance because of my weight. I am 34 and 5'4 weighing 325#

I know we all are. I am not rich either. I could make small monthly
payments and hand over my income tax refunds every year until I paid
my debt off. I just need somebody to give me a chance. Does anyone
know how I could make this happen for me. I have 3 family members

2008-04-07 13:41:08

Gosh I miss all of you during the week. I stay pretty busy, and try
to keep up on the digests but rarely get the opportunity to post
except on the weekends.
Sooo... welcome newcomers, I continue to pray and hope for the best
for all of you seeking approvals, and hugs to all you old losers, you
know I luv ya!!!!

INSURANCE

2008-04-06 15:19:51

I have to tell you all my insurance came thru. Bc/Bs said they didn't want to
take to me cause I didn't have insurance anymore. So I got on the phone and
called Cobra and I mean I yelled at them. I have paid them for the pass two
months and all the test I had done and Bc/Bs are saying I don't have insurance.
Boy they got right on the phone to Bc/Bs while I was at my surgeons office Cobra
called me and told me everything was up to date with Bc/Bs I had insurance and
they were sorry for the mix up. OH YEA the office visit went great. My surgery
is on Nov. 12, 2003. I am finally going to be a BIG L.

Hi everyone! I'm currently covered under a health plan that I'm told
doesn't cover WLS (Healthguard of Lancaster)I'm in PA and I was
wondering if I should hold out any hope that I can get approved if my
doctor deems this medically necessary?! Have any of you fought your
insurance companies to have this done?
I've talked with Member Services at the insurance company and they
tell me this is directly excluded under my employers plan BUT no one
will show me written documentation to prove it.
Any ideas or suggestions???
Thanks!

need it now. But I gave her a hug instead. Get yourself some good

Please take heart - most of us felt pretty much the exact same way right
after surgery. Your body has been thru a major shock - they make lap rny
sound so minor but they are totsally rearranging your insides.....your
mind and body suffered trauma!!!! And the anesthesia is still fogging
your mind and will for a while. Please hang in there and have faith -
You researched the surgery and ytou must have had good reasons for doing
it. You should be proud you went thru with it!!!
I felt just like you. I had a really tough beginning, and my hospital
stay wasnt good either. I had developed a huge urinary infection that
went to my kidneys but didnt know until 4 weeks post op when I finally
got a high temp and had the shakes. I just thought I was recovering!!
But truly, I didnt feel like myself again until 6 weeks,,,,,,,,and a lot
of people are like that. Some get it together earilier.....please hang
in there and have faith in YOURSELF for making such a wonderful - and
tough - decision.

You have my sympathies on having Kaiser. So do I . I was told I was approved
then not approved, just met criteria. Really, look at this website closer. There
is tons of information here. I have handouts at my last 2 hr consult. I don't
mind forwarding them. There is also a FREE Gastic Bypass book from Kaiser. Go to
the Health Education center and ask for it . Pretty informative too. No
appointment or questions asked to get.
I am very frustrated , I so want a date - I wish you the very best and write if
there is anything I can pass along ..I am pre-op and still waiting for a date- I
yelled at my doctor
for mismanaging my case so poorly. We will see if I even get in now

Hi,
I'm Cathy and I am scheduled for WLS in January 2004. I live in
Northern VA (Springfield) and have Kaiser insurance. They do all the
pre op evaluations and only send you to a George Washington
University Hospital surgeon for the actual surgery. I went to a
nutritionist with Kaiser for 6 months before the approval. She was
nice, but from what I am seeing in these posts, I did not get near
enough information about what to do about diet and vitamins. I went
to a Staple Club meeting last night in Woodbridge, VA, but that
seemed to be a free-for-all with 60 some folks there and no real
direction to the meeting. I realize I am not prepared for what to do
and that Kaiser doesn't know how to educate folks for this new WOL.
I wonder if anyone knows of a small support group or someone in my
area who would mentor me?

Re: Big Hello from Texas!

2008-04-03 01:46:53

Hi Constance!
Thank you for writing to me! No, you don't hear of couples having
the surgery very often. My husband is going first because he has
high blood pressure & diabetes. We want to get that under control
asap. Me, I just have your everyday problems with being overweight;
shortness of breath, pain in legs, tired all the time and no energy
what so ever. My concerns about the surgery are: living without
sweets, soda, did I say soda, I love my soda, not being able to
drink a lot of water at one time after working outside in the hot
Texas sun. Oh, and then there's "the tube" I hear everyone talking
about. I think it's a drainage tube. Anyway, I hear it's painful
to have it removed after surgery. Anyone who can elaborate on that,
please do!
I'm 34 and weigh 315. (not even my husband knows that) Not sure of
my goal weight, but I think it's around 150. Got a lot to lose!
We'll have to keep in touch.

I don't know what I could give in the way of advice I'm still waiting for a date

My husband and I are both having the lap/rny also. You don't hear of couples

we could bounce questions of each other. We also have 4 children. They are
9,7,4,2. We are in Colorado. We have decided that I will have my surgery first.
The weight is hard on both of our bodies but seems to be taking it's toll on
mine the worst. Any how, welcome to the group and hope to hear from you.

Update from Cheryl

2008-04-02 10:17:58

Hi, Everyone ~
First of all, welcome all newbies! This is a great group where you will
gain lots of info. Welcome!
Second - update. I saw my PCP last Monday. I talked for 15 mins. straight,
lol ! Anyway, I approached him w/an excel spreadsheet of all the diets & gyms I
have tried, how long I was on it, how much I lost & how much I gained back. I
also typed up a listing of all meds I am on, what my co-morbidities are, and
what I needed from my Dr.
He listened to everything I had to say, just nodding his head. Then he
asked what I needed from him. I told him a letter saying the surgery is
"medically necessary". I told him I needed it by Nov. 4th. He just smiled at
me & told me that I seem to have "everything under control" & he wrote me up his
letter right then! I laughed. I apologized for me being so hyper. He laughed
& told me my meds are not working at all for me, to contact my shrink, or come
back to him & he would help me. He then asked me what I wanted to do regarding
him (the reg. dr.). I told him that I wanted to see him after Nov. 4th, so that
I can keep him updated. I will find out then if the surgeon orders the tests,
or if I have to go thru my dr.
So, I want to thank everyone that has given me advice. You girls & guys
are the greatest! If it weren't for this group, I wouldn't even know where to
start. Thank you & I will keep in touch, k?
