Leaving Gastric Bypass Family

It is with some regret that I find myself needing to leave Gastric

information and the most willing and cooperative bunch of people I
have ever encountered. Unfortunately, it is exactly that willingness
to cooperate that is causing me to leave. Here is my situation:

Hello All,
I am new to the group. I have been reading all the information that has
been shared. I just want to say thank you. Ya'll have answered so many of my
questions. I have my first app. on Oct. 8. I had a stroke in Nov. of last year
and was told I had to weight and lower my Cholesterol. Of course I have tried
and still around the same weight as I was a year ago. I have managed to lower my
Cholesterol 20 points since then which is good.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] med question Tanya

Hi
I have defintely noticed a difference in the way medications work on me. I
used to take Sonata for sleep occasionally and it would knock me smooth out
after about 45 minutes. Now, after surgery, all if does it make me incredibly
dizzy about 15 minutes after I take it, then I start seeing double. After about
30 minutes the effects wear off entirely and I never feel sleepy. My Sonata
is in a capsule form (like the mepergan fortes) and so I switched to Ambien
in a pill form. It works great.

Distal vs Proximal

2008-02-26 10:30:05

I have read that heavier people are inclined to get a distal vs a
proximal. I am sure this is a doctors choice, I don't know if many
patients get a choice in what they get.
The only surgery they do at the hospital I will be going is a
proximal due to the malnutrition possibility. The doctor said no
protein suppliments were going to be needed, but dieting was required.
From what I have read, we are talking a difference between 2.5' and
6' of intestine. Most of the people here, that I can tell from the
info at the bottom of your names, say distal if they idetify it at
all.
I am 60 BMI. From what I have read, I should have a distal. Not
like I am going to switch doctors (not after all the time it took me
to get to THIS point), just wondering if anyone else is, or had a
proximal. Do you do anything different from a distal?
Enquiring minds and all that.

Hi everyone.........my computer has been on the fritz, and I'm mostly
a lurker, plus it's been a while since I've posted. I am now 3 weeks
post-op. Had my open RNY on 9/8. Everything went fine, and I'm doing
great, I would just like some input on what everyone eats at this
stage. I'm eating soft scrambled eggs, cheese sticks, chicken noodle
soup, refried beans. Tomorrow I was going to try some tuna salad, as
I return to work and actually need to start planning my meals in
advance. I have not been give clearance to eat anything like chicken
or green salads yet, which I am dying for both at this time.
I'm trying really hard to get all of my water in, but it's so hard. I
used to be able to guzzle a ton of water, now, I'm luckey if I get in
40oz a day.
Any insight on some food items would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Dep,
It's me again. You will be prone to yeast infections also (we are not
talking about the internal type here). As skin lies on skin you will sweat
and have yeast infections and rashes that will dictate medical necessity.
As soon as you get your first one, see your doctor and start the
documentation process. Take digital photos if you can and store them. It
will not be a difficult process. And start thinking in terms of
reconstructive surgery (which is medically necessary) not plastic surgery
(which is usually cosmetic). Train your mind and the rest will follow.

med question

2008-02-24 12:04:25

hi, i have a question -- previously i had chronic back pain that i'm sure
is due to my weight and i have been taking mepergan fortis (demerol &
phenergan) i took 2 and could definitely feel them working and they also
caused a dry mouth - well post-op i took them and it didn't stop the back
pain and no dry mouth so i have no idea where they are (LOL) i even tried
taking the powder after opening the capsule and still nothing -- has anybody
been on any medication and noticed a difference? they gave me liquid lortab
and that doesn't do much if anything and since it is much weaker than what i
m used to i figured it wouldn't work anyway - i wonder if we metabolize
differently now -- i have duragesic patches and i stuck one of those on
until i see my dr and tell him....

[Gastric_Bypass_Family) Help at Home?

2008-02-24 08:26:58

I had my open RNY 8/7/03. I did have someone home with me right after surgery.
Although, that was my 19 yr old son and 21 yr old daughter. My son would bring
me my breakfast, pain med and fresh water before he left for work. My daughter
got my snacks and lunch (she worked evenings) and my husband handled supper.
This allowed me to stay in my bedroom, where I had a recliner and tv, for about
the first week. I probably could have handled some of this myself earlier, but
not the first 2 days or so. I was lucky they were around. and so helpful. If
you have someone who can help for a few days, I would recommend it, especially
if you are having an open RNY.

Hi Cheryl,
First of all, if you would like to email me privately you are more than welcome.
I swear you sound so much like me it's not funny! About a month ago I was
prescribed Elavil. I too was taking Tylenol PM. I'm chicken though, I was afraid
to take more than three. And then I did something by accident one night. Forgot
I took the Elavil and took tylenol too. I slept but I'm sure that it's not safe
so will never do that again. I also average about 4 hours of sleep a night. I
don't see a shrink though. I do have alot in my past that I have come to deal
with somehow and it has been dealt with. I could say that I have one though if
you count my sister-in-law.=)
I have several suggestions and some may sound simplistic and silly, but when you
get as desperate for rest as we have been, just about everything is worth a try.
Have you ever taken melatonin? GNC has a sublingual 1mg(I think, it's a very low
dose) sometimes that works. Most of the time I just try to empy my mind about an
hour before bed go thru my nightly routine-bathe,etc. and try to be in bed at
the same time everynight. During the week I get up the same time everyday. If
I'm lucky I get to sleep in on weekends. When push comes to shove, I just need to
be outside. We have a very small acreage, so I like to walk out in the uncut
pasture and look for wild herbs. Sage is my favorite. This is kookiest one of
all, our bed has to be in line with the north and south.Once moved the bed to a
diagonal in the corner spot, we could not sleep at all. I've heard it said the
polarity of the bed makes a difference. It sure does with my husband and me.Hey

mind. You take care and keep in touch, Constance

you want)
10 ice cubes
and blend till smooth!

Been there, done that, got a divorce. Well, okay so neither of us

way into each others files, email, anyting we could find. What
promted us to start on our path, ex brought me home a diskette from

through the games, but there was also a .doc, so I opened it.
Webpage setup..."This is deticated to the woman I love, her name is

thought it was so cute. Oh, BTW, my name IS NOT Dawn....lol

Post-surgery bleeding (open rny)

2008-02-19 14:30:40

Hi all, I had an experience last night that I had not read about on
this site, so thought I would share it. I was 10 days post-op and
had noticed that my tummy was swollen a little. I was playing with
my cats when I noticed something liquid on the floor. My wound was
leaking from my navel, it was dripping everywhere! It scared me to
death. Called my doc, found out that it was a fluid buildup in my
wound area that needed to come out. He said let it drain out
completely so I sat on the side of the tub and let it go. The fluid
was part blood, part clear liquid. I asked if I needed to get the
wound resewn, and he said no, it would heal itself from the inside.
After it finished I put a bandage on it and it hasn't leaked again so
far. I'm sharing this so if it happens to others you won't be
alarmed. If it happens to you you still need to contact your doctor,
though. But it apparently is not uncommon with our surgery.

Re: Doctors something is wrong.

2008-02-19 03:34:56

I think you might want to consult a new obgyn-protein/blood in urine
can mean several things. Infection only being one. Have your hormone
levels checked. As for the ear, I have always slightly warmed some
baby oil -dip a part of a cotton ball into it removing all excess and
place it in my ear overnight. Sounds crazy , but my grandmother
taught me that and it worked for my family growing up and my kids
never have ear issues.Once a doctor said my baby had an ear infection
then I told him about this old wives secret. He said I was foolish- I
did it and took her back the next day-he had to admit her ear was
much better- good luck

Veins

2008-02-19 01:44:29

hi cheryl,
EMLA is basically topical lidocaine - recently i heard the mfg was stopping
production so i found a local pharmacy and they made a tube of it -- to me
its the best thing in the world.....typically i have good veins but i think
clear liquids b4 and the mag citrate prep to clean me out also dehydrated me
- not a good thing for getting an IV -- 1st tell them b4 hand that you are a
difficult stick and you want the anesthesiologist to do it a good nurse - i
ve seen a good nurse get one better than an anesthesiologist b/c they do
them more and know the tricks - KWIM - like you said - drop your hand, put a
warm towel on - put EMLA on both hands - iv's can only be given in an upward
direction - thats why they start with the hand -- its is prescription and if
you can get it ask for the 30 gm tube - they did have a tiny tube for one
application but i use this for everything - it was origionally created for
childrens immunizations and i think it never caught on - i use it for IV's,
hemorrhoids, epidural, breast biopsy, jelly fish bite --- i never leave home
without it (LOL).
i'm not an easy patient either b/c i'm a nurse......for example i had an
order for iv dilaudid and the nurse i had was scared to use it so he gave me
trouble the whole shift - any advice i could give is ask what your orders
say so you will know or have your dr write an order for you to be able to
see your chart -- also, believe your body - if you have something going on
don't let anybody tell you different and ask for the charge nurse if you
need to.
sorry i got off topic - there really isn't anything you can do about your
veins is drink water like crazy until midnight b4 surgery - EMLA for no pain
.....
i also had one site that bled and formed a hematoma - fancy name for a
bruise except when you are at risk for clots as is the case with surgery it
isn't good - they did not do it with me but they should - or you - make a
circle around the area with a pen so you can make sure it isn't enlarging -
that means you are bleeding inside and they need to stop it. any way i can
help just ask....

Do you have any recommendations for me regarding veins that do not like to be
poked? I have "disappearing" veins and when they find a vein, it moves on them.
I usually have to have a specialist do it (after several tries !). I know that
IV's are needed, but I am dreading the poking and prodding until they find a
"good" vein.
When I was in the hospital having my son, they literally had to drape both
arms with hot, wet towels to try to raise the veins up. That didn't even help!
They finally landed a vein (just barely because the next day when they took it
out, it came out way too easy the nurse told me). And, when the epidural was
put in, it took the analestologist (sp???) 6x before she landed it right. So, I
am not an "easy" patient, lol !!! Oh, boy, is that the truth!
Thanx~

Hi Everyone!
I decided instead of emailing everyone separately, I was gonna try to say
"thank you" in one email. If I forgot to list someone, I apologize. I just got
on my computer tonite and found 233 emails. So, I am trying to catch up on
things.
Kris A, Michelle, Vickie, Mary S., Constance, Deb in NJ, and Boogie ~ I
want to thank all of you for your support, a shoulder to cry on, & sometimes a
kick in the ass! I was in a panic when I wrote that email. I realize that I
must tell my Doctors everything. And, that my journey is actually beginning
this Monday. (I see my PCP.) (I think I need to learn the art of "breathing",
lol !!)
I started to read some of your emails on Friday nite, but I just couldn't
see the screen - I was crying too hard!! I am better tonite, tho, and the
"stubborn bitch" is coming out in me again.
Again, thank all of you for your support & for being my friend ~
Cheryl

another question

2008-02-16 08:55:23

hi, i have another question -- i had my surgery on the 22nd - monday will
be a week -- even though i'm still just on clear liquid and my protein
drinks shouldn't i feel different -- do any of you get a full feeling? so
far i haven't had that -- the only thing different is i get the indigestion
pain when i have to burp - i'm scared to over do it --- and no BM yet......i
don't want to happen to me like with my c-section -- although i was eating
reg meals but it took about 2 weeks to have a BM even though i was taking
stool softener & laxative -- i had what they call an impaction - basically a
very large hard as a rock poo-poo stuck -- i thought i would die on the
toilet and almost called 911 and would have if it hadn't been so
embarrassing - i finally was able to get done with that to have diarrhea
after - so the meds were working and just blocked. i'm thinking with only
liquids it shouldn't be that difficult - so i want to hear BM stories (LOL)
and sorry if that was TMI -- as a nurse there is no topic i won't talk about

As I'm a preop, waiting for insurance approval and going through my
rounds of testing, I can't answer your questions. But I can say that
if I can have this done, I, too, will be very focused on poo poo
issues right after the surgery (to me having a normal BM, can often
be the primary determination of whether the day is going to be good
or not). So bring on the stories!

Dear Mariah,
On obesityhelp.com I found the following surgeons listed to accept medicaid:
Merlin Otteman in Ft. Collins, C. Edward Hardford in Denver, Thomas Brown in
Denver and James Dickinson in Ft. Collins. Michael A. Snyder in Denver
takes tons of insurances including Medicare. Perhaps if you call his office
you can find out if he takes medicaid as well. Hope this helps you (from

Good luck.

I have gone to alot of Doctors. One tells me I have infection and gave me
medicine for it. Well I took the medicine. I have blood in my pee for years now.
I went to 3 doctor and they said nothing is wrong. Well I went for the blood
work with a new doctor and he said something is wrong they have to stop the
bleeding. Now I had this for over 10 yrs and not a single doctor could find
anything wrong. They put scopes down me up me. I am really tired of doctors but
I don't know what to do. This doctor gave me medicine for it. Now I have a ear
ache and I really don't want to take medicine again. Besides my surgery is 46
days away. I can't take asprin I am allergy to it. Don't tell me to pee in my
ear.

What a good idea about the straws and the cig box! The oral and what
to do with my hands is worse than the nic cravings themselves.
I figure that the worst is over today or tomorrow (4th day today),

Hello everyone. I'm home!!! I had my surgery in Houston Sept 24
(Wed.). Everything went good and I was released from the hospital
this morning. I'm on broth and jello for another week and then my
doctor says that I will start directly on solid food. I just have
to "puree" everything in my mouth. The hospital stay wasn't that
bad. I had terrific nurses. Although they do love to come into your
room at all hours of the night. But I know that they are just taking
good care of their patients and want to make sure that we have our
medications and that everything is all right. I've had a lot of
burping, and passing gas. Ooops! But it is the silent type, thank
goodness. The ride home over those Houston freeways was a little
bumpy, and it made my stomach jiggle. So I put a folded up fleece
blanket against my tummy to give it support. And I made it home
fine. I'm already tired of broth and jello, but I figure I can
endure it for a while longer. When my dear husband asked what the
doctor said that I could do and what not to do, I'm afraid that I
stretched the truth just a "little". I told my husband that the
doctor said that I could not even pick up a dish cloth or dust rag
for 6-8 weeks. And you know what?!! My husband said that was just
fine with him. I feel so good this afternoon, I hope that I don't
get over confident and do something stupid, like eating too fast, or
eating something that I really shouldn't. I really dread "dumping".
But anyway, just wanted to say hello, because everyone on this list

Boogie ~ Smoking

2008-02-13 14:38:05

Ok sweets, I've been smoke free for a blessed 1 year & 2 months.
Here's a tip that helped me. I took a bunch of straws (since they
are the same circumfrance as cigs) and cut them to cigarette length.
I put them in an empty pack and carried this around with me. When I
would get the urge to smoke, I would go out to the smoking tent, on
the patio, in the car, etc. and pop a straw "cig" out of the pack and
inhale clean air, holding my straw and exhaling as if it were a real
cigarette.
I didn't feel strong enough to quit cold turkey and new I needed to
continue the oral fixation while my body was cleansing itself of
nicotine. Once the nic fits stopped, I was able to wean myself off
the physical part and get rid of that pack of straw cigs for good.
Good luck, and I applaude your reach for a healthier life.

hi lori, i'm not even a week post-op yet but my dr gave me a pack of info
and it said that the first few BM's could have blood in it but should be
darker not red - said its blood from the surgery that got into the bowel and
is working its way out but it said if it continues for 3 times and is bright
red to call the dr. hope this helps -- actually i called them b/c when i pee
and wipe i have dark blood - like my period is about to start or stop and
they said the surgery affects the hormones and causes your period to start -
they said the hormones are similar to being pregnant. -- i kept reading on
the group too of how many ppl were complaining that of all times to start
their period it was while in the hospital so now i know why.

Dear Lori,
Hi honey. Have you been checked for an ulcer? I had those symptoms pre-op
and it turned out to be an ulcer. I was thrown on protonix for a short
while (tiny pills) and it cleared right up. I would say that while you're
waiting to find out, you might want to try colace (stool softener) to "ease
things" up a bit. But definitely get it checked. Could be it's just from
straining. Let us know how you're doing, okay?

Anybody else experience this?

2008-02-09 12:04:56

Hello all,
I am having a problem lately. I am going to the Dr today, but they
dont seem to know why I am having this either. They are so new to
this, they just dont have the experience to answer all my questions.
I am so thankful we have a place like this for help. Here is my
problem.
Tuesday I experienced a real difficult time with my bowels. I had an
urgency and then was in there for a while. I also have cramps, and
throwing up along with it. I made it thru that aftar about 30 mins
and went home early from work and slept. I felt better after that.
I did notice there seemed to be blood in my stool. I thought it
might have been my imagination, but now it is Friday and I am still
having this and it seems to be more. Mucus with some blood in it. I
just wondered if anyone else experienced this before. I am 8 weeks
post op today. I am not having any pain at all. I feel fine other
than tired, and this is my only complaint.
The Dr said he didnt know why i would be having this. He asked if i
have been sick or anyone else in my family sick, the answer is no.
He wants to do more blood work, my thoughts are why?? I can ask more
today, but what do i ask. I keep thinking it might be a block in the
bowel. Not a full blown block, as i am still functioning.
Any suggestions or personal experiences would help ease my mind.
Thanks.

Dear Jessica,
No, pizza is not out of the question in the future. When I was a fairly new
post-op (as soon as I was allowed back on semi-solids) I ate the cheese and
sauce off of a slice and it was pure heaven. Later on, when I was given
clearance for carbs, I was able to eat a little less than about a half a
slice (NY pizza... the full sized slice). I found I didn't like the way the
dough made me feel, but now, a year out, I'm able to eat about 3/4 of a
slice with no problem. I find though, that it's the cheese and sauce that I
really love, so I just eat that. I hardly do bread/dough anymore at all.

Re: Not a good day

2008-02-07 19:12:22

Howdy Cheryl,
I think everyone has bad days, but it is worse for someone who is
depressed. I have clical depression, which is a term they put on
those if us who are chemically depressed due to????, mine they chalk
up to heredity. Any way it goes, I will be on medication for the
rest of my life. This isn't such a bad prospect knowing what life is
like without the drugs. Though it is a guessing game for the doctors
to find the right drug or combination of drugs that helps you, once
they have, take them RELIGIOUSLY, and life will be soooo much better.
As far as pre op tests, my surgeon requires everyone to have an upper
GI. Probably to see if there is anything that might obstruct or
hamper surgery. It isn't bad, just don't breathe and drink...hold
you nose helps.
The phyc test. Well I saw one doctor that wanted an MMPI, which is
35 different questions asked you 10 different ways. How this tells
something, I have no clue, but it is used for phyciatric diagnosis.
The surgeon I have now wants you to see a social worker. My guess is
to see if you really know what you are getting yourself into, and can
you change your life to fit the procedure, since your new pouch won't
fit your old life. A lot of the deaths related to this surgery are
those people who didn't listen, thought the rules didn't pertain to
them, thought that "just this small piece can't hurt", or the one I
love "I thought if I left the dorito in my mouth long enough to mush,
it could be part of my liquid diet." It is also thought that this
surgery helps with some depressions, in the long run, though the
first year or 18 months it could increase it.
Hope this helped...sorry for how long it is.

surgery update

2008-02-07 11:54:22

hi,
just wanted to give everybody an update - i had surgery at 700 monday
morning sept 22nd - i had to get there for 530 to get ready - i'm scared to
death of needles so i had EMLA creme on both hands and didn't feel a thing
-- they took vitals and did paperwork - being a nurse i know its much better
and saves time to already have your med list, allergies and past surgeries
all typed up so i did that. then went to the OR and they put a mask on my
face and said take some deep breathes and that was the last thing i
remembered - they put in a catheter after i was out - TG - much better that
way ---- i had a morphine pca pump so the 1st day was kind of foggy but
comfortable. the next day was much better when they took everything out - i
have 7 sites with steri-strips --- the center one gave them trouble bleeding
and they had to hold pressure and it bruised some but dr said it was a skin
bleeder and nothing was wrong inside. i have sensetive skin and the
steri-strips caused my skin to blister so they said pull them off so i just
did that - no biggie - actually the blisters are worse. i had no drain or
anything. it has been 4 days now with being on just clear liquids and i'm
not at all hungry. the hardest part now is not being able to pick up my 7
month old - can't lift greater than 5 lbs for a week at least -- that is
causing some complication with hubby having to be home more than he should
be but he'll get over it - he had to visit a few job sites so he just
brought her with him -- if it wasn't for the itching and the blisters and
being a little sore i wouldn't know i had anything done. i am wondering if i
m taking in what i should - i was scared to swallow pills but haven't had
trouble and i'm taking tiny sips but i was thinking i would get this water
balloon feeling but haven't yet - i'll let you know how the next step goes.
i brought a 8x10 pic of my family too and they hung it in the OR - dr's do
make mistakes and i wanted him to have his undivided attention on my surgery
and the 2 most important reasons that it had to be successful...i hope
everyone else that just had surgery is doing well and i would love to know
aboout stage 1 diets - are ppl on clear liquids and if so what and how much?

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Not a good day

2008-02-07 02:02:51

Cheryl,
I have to say that you and I suffer from many of the same things. I saw my
surgeon today for the first time. He had some of my labs and I'm not sure if he
had the psychological evaluation back or not. I have acid reflux, IBS, and also
have been treated for depression off and on for the last 6 years. He has not
ordered an upper GI. I've been told that the IBS and acid reflux will probably
go away after surgery. They are considered co-morbidities and may actually help
with the approval process. As much as I hate to have them, now they may be a
blessing in disguise. With my surgeon, if you are already seeing an annalist,
you can have your Dr. do exam, but a certain format may be required. I was also
depressed that my surgeon said it wouldn't be a good idea for me to discontinue
my meds. It was suggested that I stay on my meds 1 year post-op. My bmi is 49
and I weigh 234#. All I can say is that I understand how you feel. Are you
sleeping well? I recently was prescribed a sleep med. I
still don't think it works well. I know that I would feel better if I could get
a good nights sleep.I'm really sorry you had a bad day. I just don't want you to
think that you are alone in this. We are all right there with you. I say that
alot, but it's true, remember that you aren't alone and we care, Constance

Hi Everyone!
Today has not been a good day. I have tried to be "happy" today, but it's
just NOT happening! I could be PMS'ing, I dunno.
I feel fat. Very fat. My BMI is 45. I weigh 271. I saw a gyn yesterday
and he told me I may have irritable bowel syndrome with my chronic pelvic pain.
If I do have IBS, what does that do to the surgery? I won't be able to have it,
will I? Should I just not tell my PCP and the surgeon? And, I have heartburn.
Pretty much every nite. Does that mean that the surgeon will order an upper GI
for me? If he might, I just won't tell him or my PCP about it. And, from what
the psych. analysis is (from what some of you have posted) I really don't think
that I will pass it. Has anyone on here been diagnosed with PTSD w/ panic
attacks & flashbacks? Depression? Did you pass the psych. exam?? Can I use
the shrink that I see now for my psych. exam? I am not even sure she will "ok"
me!
I want this surgery. I have NEVER in my life "wanted" surgery! I am very
much afraid of dr.s and hospitals and tests, so for me to want this, I really
want it. I am afraid of getting my hopes up and have something stupid hold me
back from having it. Perhaps even my fear.
I am sorry - I am not angry at any of you. Please believe me! Everyone has
been so nice to me, putting up with all of my questions. I am just really
depressed. (I am on meds and I have been taking them.) Can anyone help me?
Please?
Take care,

Hello, All. Hope all is well for each and every one of you. Today
is my 1-year anniversary. It's been a wild but wonderful year. I
thank God for giving me the opportunity to have wls. My life has
been changed.
One year ago I weighed 319 lbs. and was on 8 medications. I couldn't
walk more than one block without tiring. Today, I'm down to 177, and
hope to lose about 17 more lbs. I take only 3 meds. While I'm not an
exercise freak, I do (at least for the past 3 weeks) go to the gym 5
days a week. Today at lunchtime, I walked with our fitness group
about 4.5 miles around Washington, DC's Tidal Basin. I'm a little
stiff, but I feel good. I am still struggling to make the most out
of this wonderful tool we've been (or will be) given. Still haven't
mastered this carb thing don't know how many grams I'm supposed to
have, but I've been trying to keep it under 30 grams. I still have a
lot of questions, and I'm thankful to have this group to bounce them
off. I'm also still trying to deal with the emotional side of this
eating thing, and I guess I always will be. I do have the mindset
that I will have to work at keeping the weight off for the rest of my
life. My immediate plan is to weigh weekly or at least bi-weekly.
That way if I find myself 2-5 lbs. over my goal weight (once I get
there), I hope I'll be able to put myself in check before things get
out of hand.
I am so glad to have this group for support and hope I can offer you
half of what you've given me. I love you all and pray for continued
success to those of you who have had the surgery and speedy approval
(and success) for those of you still waiting.

Wish Quilt?

2008-02-04 17:08:57

I am still waiting for my surgery date and I read the messages for
encouragement. I just talked to my sister-in-law who had the
surgery earlier this week and she is doing great and she told me
that she was gave a wish quilt. Some of the folks at her work and
some friends got together and made this beautiful quilt. Each
person made one square and then someone put it together. They said
its full of good wishes for her new life and I guess they got the
idea for calling it a 'wish quilt' because she had her surgery done
by the Wish center and because, as we all know, the surgery is the
start of all our wishes. She's said the quilt will be a reminder of
how far she's come whenever she looks at it and that she has
wonderful friends. Isn't that great!

employer) has her approval and it was sent the day before mine was.

hi loretta. 1st, excellent job on the w l!!! you're just about a yr
out, wow! after lots & lots of research, feedback from the group, my
trainer, doc, etc, i've formed a "goal" weight. it is based on body
fat %age, which i have measured w/ this handheld device, where you
punch in age, weight, etc. the readout from the machine gave me x lbs
of lean body mass, & x lbs of body fat. it's very enlightening & it's
IMPOSSIBLE to play the games ppl play with the scale.
have you calculated your new BMI? unless you 4'6", you sound about
right.
& if/when you have reconstructive surgery, that subtracts a few lbs,
too.

PS don't do popcorn here, either.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Plateau

2008-02-01 05:18:28

Hello Everyone:
This is my first time to post. I joined a few weeks ago.
I am 6 months out from my surgery and I hit a plateau about 3 weeks ago.
Needless to say, I'm beginning to get a little anxious.
Has anyone else plateaued and managed to get past it? I'm trying to
remember what the Doctor's have said about it. Is it the body trying to
catch up with itself? None of that quite makes sense to me.
I know I am not eating enough at this point to not be loosing weight. I
have kicked up my exercise routine and am making sure that I am consuming
the 64 ounces of water per day, but my scale is STUCK! I am 40 lbs from
my goal weight and am beginning to wonder if I will ever see it.
Just hoping someone out there can share their experience and tell me how
long this may last and what my body is going through.
