Preop bloodtests

2008-01-31 13:16:19

I got all of my preop tests completed but had to go back to give more
blood to have my bloodwork tests repeated because my PCP said my
white blood cell count, liver enzymes, cholesterol and triglycerides
were all to high. Well today the results from the 2nd tests came back
and my liver enzymes were above normal, my cholesterol level is 303
and my triglycerides is 495. She wants to start me on Lipitor
starting tomorrow and she's faxing the results to my surgeon. I don't
know if I should be worried about this affecting my surgery scheduled
for 10/13............Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be
worried? My surgeon is in Paris on vacation until next week so I
can't talk to him until then.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Misery Joni

2008-01-31 04:01:44

Hi Joni
I went through multiple scopes - 4 actually. I would have gone through more
except at the last one, the GI doctor ruptured my stoma. It caused me a lot
of pain and made me deathly ill immediately after waking up from the anesthesia
and drinking Sprite. My RNY surgeon took me back to surgery that night to
repair the damage. My surgeon told me that many people require 2 or 3
stretchings and that for most people, that will fix the problem and the stoma
will stay
open. But some people (he said 1% although I dont know for sure) develop a
stricture and that all the stretching in the world wont fix it - the patient
will have to be reopened and the stricture repaired. Thats what happened to me.
The shrinking stoma was a nightmare from hell. I kept getting blocked, then
throwing up, then (the worst part of all!) I would start having esophageal
spasms that felt like a hot knife going into my chest and into my back. I was
hospitalized twice for the blockages, stretched via an EGD 4 times and also had
several other ER visits in the 4 months since my RNY. But there is hope -
once I had the surgery to repair the stricture, my eating became 200% better. I
havent had any pain when eating, havent vomited or had any other trouble
since the repair (which was 9-9-03. My original surgery was 5-13-03). Meat was
the very worst thing for me. I disagree with your partner's assessment that
you arent eating enough and thats why it is shrinking. It really sounds like
you had the same problem I did. As someone who has been there, my advice is
avoid meat and talk to your surgeon about possibly having a stricture and get
his/her take on it. I am sorry that you had to suffer so much after your last
EGD. It sounds a lot like what happened after my last one, but my surgeon said
it was an emergency and had to be repaired right then - and I agreed....I felt
like I was dying! I had really bad shoulder, chest and arm pain. My arms
were very weak and I couldnt even move my left one at all. I started vomitting
and passed out twice. I dont know why your situation was different than mine
(or why yours wasnt considered an emergency), but I hope you dont have to go
through that again.

Maybe I'm not the best person to answer this since I don't measure my
food.but I'll try to give you my take on it.
When I had my surgery, I was told to just eat until I had that
"comfortable" feeling. When I first started solid foods, this was
probably about 1-2 oz of foods (mainly proteins, some other things) but
now I can probably eat up to 4 or 5 oz. I started doing this about 6
weeks ago (I'm almost 14 weeks now). Does this help at all?

Hi y'all,
I was scoped at 4 weeks postop for dilation of my stoma between my new
tummy and the intestine. Now, I've had to have it done again at 8 weeks
postop. It was much worse this time. The doctor busted two dilation
balloons and used the tube itself to poke through the nearly closed
stoma. He gave me the pics he took during the procedure. There are
blisters near the opening, which was all bloody. YUCK!
I tried to eat meat today because my partner insists that the stoma
keeps closing because I'm not eating enough solid food. Well that
really irritated everything and I've been throwing up all evening.
Can't even keep down water. I just got scoped Monday. The doctor said
he may do it again next week just for good measure.
Has any one else gone through multiple scoping and dilations. The first
one wasn't bad, but the second one was really rough. I really, really
don't want to go there again.
Miserably,
Jony

Ok gang, Wolfie needs some help here. I need to know at what point we begin
to increase the amount of food we are taking in. I do not want to stretch my
tummy and though I do not cook everynight there is at least twice a week i will
sit down and try to eat a good balanced meal. But I keep feeling that I
shouldnt be eating it. I did not weigh the food I ate but I did eat it on a
small
breakfast place. I ate a small turkey burger, spinach, and cauliflower. And I did
not feel painfully full by any means. I was very comfortable and this scares
me. I can drink water and feel horribly full and eat and feel fine. But I dont
eat like that all the time at all. I know that we started out eating two
ounces of food but at what point should we or could we begin to increase that
amount? I don't want to do anything that will mess this up for me. I have lost
28
pounds since August 27, 2003 and I want to lose so much more. I am terrified
I will mess up. So everyone please............give me some advice.

Hello everyone, I just want to take a minute and say Thank-you to
everyone out there. I really enjoy and appreciate everyone here. I
enjoy reading and getting everyones input.
I had my surgery on October 14, 2002. I started out at 389 in
January 2002 and as of September 18, 2003 I am 158. I am sorry to
say that I did not meet my goal. I set my goal @ 150 by the time I
see Dr Cooney on the 2nd of October. As of right now I am not
there. I feel as though I have slowed down a lot. My end goal is
125. Is that reasonable? I don't know. Is that healthy? I will
have to wait and see what Dr Cooney says to me.
In one of our meetings someone had said that they used to eat a lot
of popcorn. Well I do like my popcorn. I am really trying to watch
my carbs now. Popcorn is not on my list. I am trying not to eat it
at all anymore.
Does anyone have an advice for me? I will appreciate any input.
I would also like to be a part of a committee (if there is such) to
visit people in the hospital. I truely believe that we all need
support. I would like to be there if anyone needs anything. Let me
know if there is such a thing and please let me know where I can help.
Thanks,
Loretta

Boogie,
My surgeon also refused to do the surgery on a smoker because of the
high risk involved to the lungs during the procedure itself and also because
smoking causes your body not to heal as well. I had to also stop prior to
surgery.

they don't interest me, I just pass them by. Just my 2 cents worth. Barbara G

And yet another question....

2008-01-29 12:42:08

I went today to take some breathing tests. They still have to take
blood gases, but the tests that I did take showed I had a marked
(what is marked, and how is it measured?) diminished lung capacity.
I have a nasty chest cold which they didn't think affected the test
much, and I have also smoked for 30 years, which is what they do
think is probably more of a reason. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema
where just a few of the choice names that were tossed out. Possibly
crowding of the lungs, or combination of many. Since the surgeon
won't touch me without being smoke free for at least 30 days, I
stopped then. 2 days, so far, so good.
I am soooo afraid that anything and everything will kill my shot at
surgery. Has anyone else who has (had?) diminished lung capacity,
especially if it was considered "marked" gone though the surgery? (is
that worse than "serious"? Or just annoying blatant but not bad
enough to be called serious? Or is it some code? 'This guy has a
MARKED condition'....wink wink) Is it something that might be
(depending on how bad it is) a co-morbitity? I can't see being the
only smoker out there, and I figure someone has run across this
problem.

I have, but not by choice. The first doctor stopped taking medicare

Re: Drains and Consult

2008-01-25 14:33:27

I'm cracking up about all this discussion going on about drains. I had my
consult yesterday, and when the nurse practitioner asked me if I had any
questions, my mind drew a total blank. So I asked her if I would have a
drain after surgery. It was the first and only thing that came to mind. And
to tell you the truth, I've never been real concerned about the drainage
issue. My husband had one when he had throat surgery, so I've already been
exposed.
Other than that, my consult went pretty well. When I saw my pcp in July, my
BMI was 39. But it seems that I've lost a few lbs. since then and now it's
37.9. Go figure! And I was all ready to razzle-dazzle them with my high
blood pressure, but it was also very well behaved, 128/82. I couldn't get a
break. However, the doc was very excited about my comorbids (hypertension,
high cholesterol, fibromyalgia, cerebral palsy with arthritis and big time
joint pain and incoordination when I walk), so he said that he would love to
do the surgery! His nurse practitioner wasn't real excited though and stated
I could have a problem with the insurance because of my BMI, grrr.
I should have all my other preop requirements and testing completed by Oct.
16, and from there it's a waiting game.
Congrats to all of the progress made here. This is a wonderful support
group! It's always so much fun to check in here and see where everyone is

I don't have to worry, my insurance pays. But my sister's insurance
doens't cover any WLS. So I was wondering, what is the average cost
(say in Denver)? I find it kinda ironic, she works for an insurance
company, helps write policies and actually worked on the policy for
her own company, and they purposely chose NOT to cover WLS for their
own employees because of the high costs. I also have a friend in
Kansas who doesn't have any insurance except medicaid, does anyone
know if the state covers? I'm extreemly overweight, and she probably
has 75-100 pounds on me and desperately needs the surgery.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] I have a date! (and my probs are starting)

2008-01-23 23:27:55

Thanks for the welcome Lisa!
I have BCBS PPO and their guidelines are, according to a
letter they sent me, they have the 40 BMI and diet history
requirements. The BCBS rep told me not to worry, it's not
that hard to get approved if I meet the criterea. I really
don't have many comorbidities, but they're starting (that
story below). My BMI is around 45 and I have a long family
history of hypertension, diabetes, and my granny had sleep
apnea. So keep your fingers crossed for me.
Now, let me tell you all what happened last night. I went
to the emergency room b/c I got sudden extreme pains in my
lower back and lower chest/stomach area. I thought it
might be kidney or gall stones. In Los Angeles, there's a
waiting list in emergency rooms (something I'm not used to
as I grew up in Lincoln, NE). After we (my partner and I)
put my name in, I sat down and about 15 minutes later, the
pains subsided. No idea what that was all about. I have a
constant dull ache in my lower back that I've always
attributed to my weight. My partner has had gall-stones
and said except for the fact that my pain only lasted an
hour, it was similar to her gall-stone attacks.
I'm looking up a gastro doc to see today to find out what
happened last night. If nothing else, this might be a
blessing in disguise as I will have another health problem
to submit to BCBS and they might approve me having the
surgery quicker. We'll see.
The parts I'm most nervous about are the pre-approval
process and the immediate recovery since I'm relatively a
stranger to pain. Other than the fact that I'm 300 lbs,
I've had maybe 5 sick days in my life so I'm relatively
healthy. But the problems are starting so I'm glad I at
least have a plan of action, I just hope it works out.
I've been having trouble sleeping too but I don't know if
it's b/c I'm anxious about getting it all started or maybe
I'm beginning to have sleep apnea. I doubt it though b/c I
really don't carry a lot of weight in my chest and I sleep
on my side but who knows.
Anyway, thanks for listening to me ramble. My consult with
the bariatric surgeon is 9/30 so it's less than a week
away!!
Kris :-)

Hi Kris,
I don't mean to but in, but WELCOME!! I had Aetna, had
very easy
approval. If I could give a suggestion, many insurance
companies are
now requiring 6 months of diet/exercise monitored by your
PCP. Since
the pre-op process can take that long, you should check and
see if
your insurance requires this now. If they do, start it now
so you
don't get in trouble at the end.

Public Toilets and Spiders

2008-01-23 06:38:59

Here's what I found at Snopes.com (Urban Legend Referral Pages)
http://www.snopes.com/horrors/insects/buttspdr.htm
This
entertaining scare story, which first surfaced during the summer of
1999, is fairly easy to identify as a hoax by the slightly-altered
and obsolete real names used to give it an air of authenticity. Thus
Chicago's O'Hare airport becomes "Blare Airport," the Journal of the
American Medical Association becomes the "Journal of the United
Medical Association," the name of the Civil Aeronautics Board is
invoked even though that organization was dissolved in 1984, and an
apocryphal genus/species classification of "arachnius gluteus"
(i.e., "butt spider") is assigned to the star of today's legend.
In October 2002 new life was breathed into this hoax when it was
circulated anew with many of its details changed, even though the
text of the warning barely shifted at all:
The three women hospitalized in Chicago over a five-day period
became three women hospitalized in North Florida over the same space
of time.
The spiders' ground zero (Big Chappies at Blare Airport) became an
Olive Garden at an unspecified location.
The "South American Blush Spider (arachnius gluteus)" became "the
Two-Striped Telamonia spider" (Telamonia dimidiata)."
The Los Angeles lawyer who had taken a flight from New York City
that changed planes in Chicago became a Jacksonville lawyer who had
flown from Indonesia, changing planes in Singapore.
The flight investigators discovered had originated in South America
now was said to have originated in India.
No one has been bitten by "blush spiders" lurking in airline toilet
seats. Although some spiders prefer dark, cool places and can
sometimes be found under (mostly outdoor) toilet seats -- as
evidenced by Slim Newton's 1972 song about the Australian Redback
Spider, "The Redback on the Toilet Seat" -- an airliner toilet would
be quite an inhospitable abode for a spider due to the chemicals
used in them. Of all the precautions you might want to take when
travelling by air, checking under the toilet rim for spiders should
be given a very low priority.

Meeting Dr. Sifers

2008-01-19 10:18:08

Hello Everyone,
I had my first consultation today. I really liked Dr. Sifers and his
office staff. He spent alot of time talking to me and answering all
of my many questions. He described the surgery to me in great
detail. I felt very at ease with him. Now the really fun part
begins, trying to get my insurance to approve the surgery. Who knows
how long that process could take. I am pleased with my choice of
surgeons.

Re: feeling guilty :(

2008-01-19 03:14:09

Nora,
Don't ever feel guilty about that! Thank God that he gave you the
realization you needed to have the surgery BEFORE you ever got that
far. If there's one regret I have, it is that I let myself get to
605 lbs. and congestive heart failure at age 32 before I woke up and
started LIVING! But sometimes we can get so stubborn God has to
slap us upside the head before we'll wake up. :-)
Congratulations on your own decision, and ENJOY it! The difference
it will make will be INCREDIBLE!

Nora,
Please don't feel guilty, not for one minute. We are hear to listen and help out
where we can. Consider yourself fortunate that you don't have the co-morbidities
and leave it at that. We MO people are all too often made to feel guilt from
those who do not understand what it is like to be us. This is one place in the
world where you can be yourself if you are a pre-op, post-op or whatever, think
of this place like really good sugar free chocolate...all of the pleasure
without the pain of guilt (well I thought it was funny when I thought of
it-LOL)Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing, Constance

new goal

2008-01-18 23:32:38

Hi, guys (and ladies, don't mean to be sexist!)--
Well I am holding right now at 340 lbs, down 265 from pre-op. My
surgeon is very happy with where I'm at and in fact said based on my
overall appearance and "proportionality" I really shouldn't lose
much more. He pointed out that he told me before I ever had the
surgery that if I got down between 300 and 350 lbs. I should be
happy; that's part of the reason I have never listed a goal weight
in my signature. He said that after all, the important thing is not
so much the final weight as the overall health, especially in
looking back at where I started. For example, pro football players
can weigh nearly 400 lbs. or more, but you generally wouldn't
consider most of those guys to be unhealthy.
While I agree with him for the most part, I've realized I do have a
goal now after all: Now that I am actually within sight of it, I
want to be under 300 lbs., even if it is just to 299! The last time
I was under that was for my 8th grade football physical, when I
weighed in at 296 lbs--21 years ago. I want to get there again.
That way I can say, "I'm half the man I used to be!" :-)
God bless everybody in this great family,

hey tanya, pls check w/ your nutritionist. i'm doing mainly protein
(averaging 80 grams a day), plenty of water to keep the system
running smooth, decaf tea, crystal light. less than 60 gr of carbs.
keep a fitday.com journal. a nutritionist @ a support meeting
advised me to do the Zone, b/c in her estimation i look like i'm @
goal. wrong!
hope you find an answer, cuz personally, them carbs are a slippery
slope---gave me cravings!! wish i could blame it on PMS, but it was
the stinky simple carbs. i've read somewhere regarding the glycemic
index of foods & how that's helpful in keeping hunger brought on by
changes in blood glucose @ bay.
sorry for the slow response, i've been swamped in my non-cyber life.
best of luck, you can do kick them cravings!! & wish me luck on my
little protein kick, today makes 8 complete days.

Leslie~~
I have been where you are. You didn't give much info
about yourself, so I'll just tell you how I felt and
how I am coping, maybe it will help you.
I was sexually abused as a child, then at the age of
twelve I suddenly developed a very curvy, womanly,
figure. I was not prepared for that, so I consciously
decided to be "fat and ugly", to avoid the unwanted
looks and attention of men. After twenty plus years, I
had emotionally healed to the point where I felt that
I did not need the "wall of fat" to protect me any
longer. I tried very hard to lose it, IE. diet and
exercise. I finally got an approval for surgery. I had
a Lap-RNY on 2/4/03 and have lost 90 pounds.
In May, one day I looked in the mirror and "Fat
Sharon" was gone. I freaked out and began to spiral
out of control. I thought I'd have problems with men
looking at me, but it turned out that I had problems
with the little girl who was hiding behind the "wall
of fat", who found herself exposed. I really hit a
wall. I got very depressed and frightened. I stopped
eating, taking my vitamins, drinking my water, and
even sleeping. I got to the point where suicide was
crossing my mind regularly. A few people were starting
to look at me funny, but I kept denying that I was
having problems. I have always been "the rock" within
my family and never one to ask for help, so admitting
that I was unwell, was just an impossibility for me.
The night that I contemplated suicide was incredibly
frightening. I finally called a friend who talked me
through it. I admitted to her that I had been breaking
all of the WLS rules and asked her to help me.
She made me promise to seek help, so I am now seeing a
therapist, a psychiatrist, and am taking Zoloft. I
began eating, taking the vitamins and drinking
appropriately. I even started exercising, it helps
with my attitude and endorphin production (happy
hormones!) It is changing the shape of my body, which
helps with the way I see me and it gives me something
to do, instead of sitting alone and thinking. I am
still working hard to get better, it gets a little
easier every day. I have admitted to all of my friends
and family where my head was and is, so that they can
support me and spot check me.
I think some of the depression is healed by "choosing"
to fight it. It is important to feel proactive. I am
getting better and I know that you can, too. If you
have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I am
happy to share. I will also be happy to listen, if you
need a ear and a shoulder.

I am too going thru that. But the only thing is I am allergy to Zoloft. My
doctor don't know what to do. I am going thru the change of life. She said she
never seen me so happy now that I am going to have the surgery. I am scare to
death I am going to have one of them attack as I call them before surgery. I
have very hard time dealing with it. I pray alot and so does my poor hubby when
it comes to that day. Depression is nothing to laugh about. Just think if you
don't have the medicine to help you with it. It is very hard. I know I feel
terrible about the day I have it. But I keep thinking I am going to get over
this with the man upstairs help. So hang in there and you too will get over it.
Come to me and I will give you a big HUG. Unless your like me and you don't want

More Drain Questions

2008-01-13 13:57:57

Cheryl,
Mine was about the same thing as Pamela's was. It was clear plastic with
a container on the end that could equate to the 'rubber ball thing' on
the end where the liquids and other things collected inside. It has to
be emptied at least once a day and sometimes it gets "slimy stuff'
inside it but not always. Everything else Pamela said was about the
same. I wouldn't have known when he pulled it out if my husband hadn't
been standing there saying "Ooh yuck!" It didn't hurt and it wasn't
really that bad. If it hadn't been for the inconvenience of having to
pour the stuff out and having it hang out while you're taking a shower,
I wouldn't have minded it.

Hi everyone,
Well today is a very bad day for me. Im having one of those "feel
sry for myself" or "fat" days. I get this way every now and then.
When I try on different clothes and nothing seemd to fit right. Or I
see someone smaller than me and wish I looked like that. I do suffer
from Depression (due to my weight) and take Zoloft for it. But
sometimes it just doesnt work. But no matter how much I try or how
many times someone tells me I look good. I just feel like getting in
bed and covering my head up and not looking back. I know I cant do
that because I have to be here for my kids. I know many of you have
more seriuos problems than I. But I feel like I can talk to you and
know that I want be ridiculed for this.

Hi there,
Omar and I are doing fine. Omar has lost over 173 pounds so far and is
getting around so much better. We are always on the go now, he has so much
energy,
it's difficult for me to keep up with him. LOL
I'm hoping we can make a trip down to see you and your wife. We had a get
together at Bennigan's on Sunday and there was a total of 11 there which we
thought was good. Will you be going to the picnic in Miami in October? Omar and
I
are going so maybe we will see you guys there. Hope things are going ok for you
and your wife. Talk to you soon.

I've seen many, many people rid themselves of the carb crazies by going on
four days of proteins and fluids only. Maybe that would help you get rid of
the cravings. Good luck...

Pamela,
I have to ask a gross question about the drain. Does it smell? I know it's a
strange question by hubby has odor issues. Can you tell me? Thanks, Constance
Pamela <psk1957@...
My doc leaves the drain in for 1 week, mine was just to the right of
my belly button. For me it was not bad at all, wouldnt have known it
was there if I didnt see it and had to empty it! They put a drain in
to get the extra fluid out from the surgery, and another reason my
doc leaves it in a week is, if your going to pop a staple or
something and start to bleed that drain will fill fast and you will
call him fast and he can fix it before its bad.

after surgery?? Where was it on you? Was it uncomfortable? Is this
common to do? Why did you need a drain?

Boogie

2008-01-08 07:13:45

Dear Boogie (I love that name... that's what I call my daughter),
A leak test is simply that. They take you to radiology and stand you in
front of an x-ray machine. They give you this really thick stuff to drink
and watch it as it makes its way down and through your pouch. If you have a
leak, it will show immediately and they will have to go back in and fix it.
If you have no leak, they will then allow you to have liquids. Sometimes
it's done in the operating room before they even bring you out to recovery.
Different doctors do it different ways. Mine was standing and drinking that
yucky stuff. If you have to do that too, I suggest you just gag it down and
get it over with because if you don't get it all down, they have to repeat
the test... yuck! It's not a hard test though. Good luck and
congratulations to you that things are moving along for you.

new photos and a new complication

2008-01-07 11:02:44

Hey, everybody--
I finally got a scanner, so I made a folder called "Steve G." and
uploaded some pre-op and current pics. I also have a couple of
questions. I have had a new complication, called a suture
granuloma. I know now it is relatively common (especially in
someone who was SMO and lost a lot of weight) and easily removed (it
took about ten minutes of out-patient surgery last week at Baptist
Hospital in Little Rock, AR). What I am curious about is: Has
anyone else had one of these? If yes, how long did it take you
theal and how long did it interfere with any exercise program? Mine
is located at the top of my surgical incision just below the sternum
and the wound after removal is about 1/2 inch wide and about 1 inch
deep. Thanks!

today, am so happy to be back. My blood pressure has ALREADY been
cut in half, and it looks like I won't have to take any diabetic
meds. Am feeling great, haven't taken any pain meds in 3 days. Had

Michele,
Hi! Yeah, I missed "chat", too! I didn't know about it until I logged on
about 9 pm. I guess it's at 7 pm (I, too, am EST).
I am sorry, but I can't answer your other question about checking for leaks.
I have an idea, only from what I have read. But, I feel that someone that has
already had the surgery should talk to you about it, not a pre-op, like me.
Question for you, tho! With "chat" do you need a microphone? Or, is it
typing? And no, you are not a computer nerd! If you were, you wouldn't be on
here! lol
Take care,

Thank you! I understand the dr.'s are different, just as we are all
different from one another. I am trying to stay positive about it. The surgery
itself scares me, big time!!! But, I keep thinking (size 12) and I smile! I
can't imagine it! I try to, but the last time I wore a size 12, I was 12 years
old. I am 36 now! lol
Take care & thanx,

possible.

Dancing on the ceiling!

2008-01-05 02:20:58

Getting closer!
I went to the surgeon today for the intake appointment for the
gastric bypass. FINALLY!
First off, tonight is my last night of smoking. Actually been
looking forward to a REASON to stop. Not like good reasons like it
is bad for you, or just plain old expensive aren't great, but serious
complications during surgery is definately a WONDERFUL reason. Plus
I have to be minimum 30 days without smoking before surgery. The
soomer I stop, the sooner I go.
As far as being approved by insurance, the doctor said that Medicare
okay's all who are medically necessary, and OH BOY, I qualified. My
state back up, well, what Medicare pays, the state pays, so that
didn't seem to be a problem.
I went in with my 3 pages of neatly typed questions, most of which I
assumed would be answered in the course of talking, and most were. I
had my special questions like about the drugs I take, and things
relating to me personally. They had no problem taking the time.
Since I will be in a teaching hospital, I asked about interns working
on me, but was reasurred that they only do minor things like cut
suture. No way getting near the bowel (cool). I told them I had no
problems with students. I aslo asked about intubation, and it is
done after they knock you out, through the mouth.
I was shocked to hear some things. Shocked good. It seems the type
of surgery they do here (proximal Roux-Y) requires no protein
suppliments afterward. The multi, iron, B-12 and calcium are still
required. They do the surgery both lap and open, and normally I am
on the far end of what they feel comfortable doing lap, but since I
have such a big hernia that isn't a real hernia (strangulated fat, no
bowel involved), and it has made the sides (side walls?) thinner, the
suture line of an open surgery might break. The doctor said that he
can try lap, but if they can't do it, they open me up. Better that
than waking me up and sending me home undone!
It really helped having most of my tests done or scheduled. They are
only requiring, other than what I had done, a pulmonary function
test, and a trip to thier social worker (said it would be the same
day as the next visit to the doctor). A dietician visit was also
required, but she had time, so got that in today. Since I have to be
a non smoker for 30 days, I will see him in about 30 days to check
test results and get my date. Since the appointmenet setter also
does the insurance approvals, the doctor said surgery would probably
be less than a month from the second visit.
I was nervous and anxious about the appointment today, fearing
something, ANYTHING could and would go wrong, I now feel like I have
had 2 pots so coffee and could bounce off the ceiling!
One more step done in a long line, but that line is getting shorter
all the time!

weight watchers, la weight loss centers, and stuff like that. i told them
that if i went to the dr everytime i was trying a diet i would need to just move
in to my dr's office. i think that a lot of praying and me actually talking
with the appeals bourd at my leavel 3 grievance/appeal i was approved. i am
currently getting all my letters and things together and then i am going to take
some picures of myself,( before this i would never take a picture) and i want

getting so worked up about it, and then, I usually remember (doesn't work all
the time, lol ). Like today, I missed 3 pills at lunch time. Oh, well! I am
trying and you have to keep trying, too! Please do NOT give up, although

Tanya,
Hi! I have had similar experiences with 2 different VS stores. You wanna talk
about attitude problems, or if you want to get pissed off at someone, I highly
recommend a trip to a VS store, lol ! Oh, man!
There's a sleazy store in Hartford called "VIP" and they have a lot of
different sizes, including plus-size. They are not overly priced, like VS is.
And, the two guy owners did not cop an attitude with me! So, needless to say,
guess who will be shopping there after my surgery. Yes! (I am already hyped up
about my surgery & I haven't even gone to the 1st Support Meeting - am I TOOOO

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to update. I go Friday the 26th for my 2 week

start the proceedings for my Ins. Dr. Dyas wanted to know everything
that I ate for 2 wks. He said that it would give him a better
perspective on how much of the small intestant he could bypass.
He said that if you were a junk food eater that he could bypass more
SI to make the food bypass faster.
Has any one else had to do the 2wk meal diary.
I will keep you updated on how things go. Hopefully I will also be

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] HELP!!! (and phoey on Dr. Phil!)

2008-01-01 02:18:33

Hi Tanya,
Although I'm still a pre-op, I do have a theory that may help. Just like when
you are pregnant, when you crave certain things it's because your body needs it.
Like craving dirt,as some women and children do when they are low on iron. I was
told that you don't want to eat chips(even the baked kind) because by the time
they make their way to your little tummy, they are pretty much liquid anyway and
wash right thru the small opening to your intestines. So they are empty calories
and just no good for you. An alternative you may want to consider is sunflower
seed in the shell. You will get your salt craving taken care of and get some
protein as well. Or nuts of some sort as long as you chew well. Just a thought,
Constance
Tanya Trout <Leeds@...
Hello all,
I need some help. I'm having a problem and I just don't know what to
do about it. At 3 months out, I'm pretty happy with my progress as
far as loss and what have you but lately I've been having really bad
snack attacks. This has been happening for about the last week or so
and I just don't know what to do. I crave the salt off crackers and
what have you and have been cheating a little bit with those new
Ritz Chips. I know that it is awful! I don't know what to do. Any
suggestions for what to do when the cravings come on? I think I
still have some of that mentality that I did before surgery and it's
driving me bananas!!!!! Please Help!!!!
On a side note, I was watching Dr. Phil today and he said the
dreaded, mean, nasty words, "If you want a quick fix, go have your
stomach stapled!" I couldn't believe it. What a mean man!!!!!
