Getting closer!
I went to the surgeon today for the intake appointment for the
gastric bypass. FINALLY!
First off, tonight is my last night of smoking. Actually been
looking forward to a REASON to stop. Not like good reasons like it
is bad for you, or just plain old expensive aren't great, but serious
complications during surgery is definately a WONDERFUL reason. Plus
I have to be minimum 30 days without smoking before surgery. The
soomer I stop, the sooner I go.
As far as being approved by insurance, the doctor said that Medicare
okay's all who are medically necessary, and OH BOY, I qualified. My
state back up, well, what Medicare pays, the state pays, so that
didn't seem to be a problem.
I went in with my 3 pages of neatly typed questions, most of which I
assumed would be answered in the course of talking, and most were. I
had my special questions like about the drugs I take, and things
relating to me personally. They had no problem taking the time.
Since I will be in a teaching hospital, I asked about interns working
on me, but was reasurred that they only do minor things like cut
suture. No way getting near the bowel (cool). I told them I had no
problems with students. I aslo asked about intubation, and it is
done after they knock you out, through the mouth.
I was shocked to hear some things. Shocked good. It seems the type
of surgery they do here (proximal Roux-Y) requires no protein
suppliments afterward. The multi, iron, B-12 and calcium are still
required. They do the surgery both lap and open, and normally I am
on the far end of what they feel comfortable doing lap, but since I
have such a big hernia that isn't a real hernia (strangulated fat, no
bowel involved), and it has made the sides (side walls?) thinner, the
suture line of an open surgery might break. The doctor said that he
can try lap, but if they can't do it, they open me up. Better that
than waking me up and sending me home undone!
It really helped having most of my tests done or scheduled. They are
only requiring, other than what I had done, a pulmonary function
test, and a trip to thier social worker (said it would be the same
day as the next visit to the doctor). A dietician visit was also
required, but she had time, so got that in today. Since I have to be
a non smoker for 30 days, I will see him in about 30 days to check
test results and get my date. Since the appointmenet setter also
does the insurance approvals, the doctor said surgery would probably
be less than a month from the second visit.
I was nervous and anxious about the appointment today, fearing
something, ANYTHING could and would go wrong, I now feel like I have
had 2 pots so coffee and could bounce off the ceiling!
One more step done in a long line, but that line is getting shorter
all the time!
