Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Shopping

Chrissy,
WTG!!!!! DOesnt it feel great! I Like you have been fortunate to have been
given alot of my new clothes as well.. Going from a 30 to a size 14 - 16 in 10
months .. Thank goodness My neice lost weight .. I got all her hand me downs ..
imagine a 41 year old wearing the same clothes that a 19 year old wore .. lol
Everyone is like wow .. I always wore things that were long and baggy, now I
wear more fitted clothes. Showing the Waist that I now have :) and the legs
that were buried underneath all the length.
I cant wait to go on a shopping spree that I have been saving for since the day
after my surgery. Keep up the great job:)

Unfortunately, my shpping has gotten worse, but its just because I really
need new clothes..hehe. My friend had a breast reduction, tummy tuck and lipo
about 2 weeks before my surgery. She weighed about 260lbs at her highest weight
and lost all the way to 180 on her own. (I don't know how, girl never eats
veggies or anything healthy and she has 3 kids! hehe) Anyways, she was a
godsend..she had clothes from size 22 to 18, and quite a few at that. I am now
happy to say she is in a size 11 and looks fantastic! Anyways, I have been able
to get by mostly on the clothes she gave me, and of course I bought some new
stuff...just b/c I could :) I'm kind of happy to say I am getting to the point
where i HAVE to shop because I am out of clothes that fit me. (just wish I
had the $$ to keep it up...lol) I'm actually smaller than all my friends (with
the exception of my friend Shanna..hehe) and they are loving it, because
well...I have LOTS of clothes! One of my coworkers has come on two separate
occasions to "go shopping" in my closet. My friends have all reaped the
benefits
with several trash bags full of clothing, and now we are having a yard sale in
a few weeks and I am going to again have more clothes to add. Its so
exciting. I have not been this small since highschool... I actually went into
the Gap
the other day, which only has to size 16, and bought a denim mini skirt.which
fits! Sunday I went to Old Navy after my eye appt and tried on a skirt and
some slacks, and I just grabbed the 16's to see (i never know, some 18s are
tight, others are huge) and they both fit perfect! I couldn't believe i was in
a
size 16! Coming from a 26-28 this is very exciting. The past six months
have certainly brought about a lot of changes for me, and I see the confidence
in
myself that is building and find myself wondering, who is this girl?! This
has truly been a wonderful and amazing journey of self discovery for me. I'm
learning to love the person i see in the mirror, not in a vain sense, but just
removing all that self hatred and shame....Believe it or not, I have recently
been considering joining the military (if it is even possible with having this
surgery I don't know). Since I have a college degree, I will be going in as
an officer, which is somewhat easier :) To qualify, I have about 50lbs more
to lose, and of course I got to learn to do some push ups and sit ups! I've
talked to a personal trainer and I am going to meet with her this week and start
working on a regimen to get me to my ultimate goals. (i must admit, i have
not been exercising like i should) For the first time, I feel like I am being
proactive in my life and making things happen, rather than being reactive only
responding when forced, and it is so liberating! LOOK OUT WORLD!

Fw: Butter vs. Margarine

2007-08-29 14:07:36

Butter vs. Margarine
Subject: Butter vs. Margarine
BUTTER VS MARGARINE
Both have the same amount of calories
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the
same amount of butter -
according to a recent Harvard Medical Study
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods
Butter has many nutritional benefits, whereas margarine has a few only because
they are added.
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of
other foods
Butter has been around for centuries whereas margarine has been around for
less then 100 years
Now for Margarine...
° Lowers HDL cholesterol (and this is the good one)
° Increases the risk of cancers by up to five-fold
° Lowers quality of breast milk
° Decreases immune response
° Decreases insulin response
And here is the most disturbing fact.... Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE from
being PLASTIC.*
This fact alone should be enough to have you avoiding margarine for life and
anything else that is hydrogenated - this means hydrogen is added changing the
molecular structure of the food
EXPERIMENT: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or a
shaded area.
Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things - no flies, not even
those pesky fruit flies will go near it, (that should tell you something) It
does not rot, or smell differently..
Because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it, even those teeny
weenie micro-organisms will not a find a home to grow on...Why? because it is
nearly plastic.
* Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

twenty for a total of 82 lbs since June 20th. I'm psyched!!! I hope

Dumping is the body's reaction to putting too much refined sugar into
your stomach and it goes straight into your intestines which are not
able to digest it. It is really another word for a hypoglycemic
reaction. Dumping (for me) was not throwing up, but just really
nauseaus, cold sweat, fluish, miserable, i want to die feeling. Since
I didn't throw up, I didn'thave to worry about counting or not
counting proteins. I hope this helps just a little bit.

Okay, I live in Alabama and on an AL BB I post at someone posted
about the BC/BS of AL changing it's way of paying for bariatric
surgery. They said they heard that BC/BS of AL will only pay %50 of
the surgery after the first of the year. Now I wonder IF this is
true or just a rumor? If it's true, then when (thinking positive) I
get approved this year and have surgery planned for after the first
of the year (2004) will I then have to pay %50? Or will I fall under
this years plan since I would have been approved this year (2003)?
I hope it's just a rumor and someone stirring up trouble to get a
rile. It's not a good one to mess with. This could stop me.

Im gettin crazy here in Alabama!

2007-08-27 16:45:16

Ok guys, I did the unforgivable. I bought a scale and now everyday when I
wake up it yells at me, "Step right up and see what you havent lost today!" Its
making me crazy. So now I have decided to pick one or two days a week and
weigh. I have not lost any more weight and I push the proteins and water. I walk
as
much as I can with these horrible joints. I have been doing more around the
home. I got up this morning and painted this huge deck on the inside part and
will go out in a few minutes and do the outside and then tomorrow I will do the
small deck. But I have to admit...not losing like I thought I would is pretty
discouraging. I know I have to keep my chin up and a positive attitude so I
am trying not to get to absorbed in the thought of standing still.Of course I
could be losing inches but two weeks out it would probably not be likely. I
wish I could find a bicycle I could ride around my neighborhood I hate those
stationary bikes. Before the surgery I threw one away. Of course it was
uncomfortable and I thought I was going to have to call 911 to get the seat out
of my
a**, lol. But I really would like to find the old style of bike. I don't want no
speed bike that I would probably land up in a tree with, but I would like one
of the old faithfuls. I guess I will have to start looking at yard sales and
such. Oh well, all you guys please say a prayer for me that the needle will
start moving again ok? Thanks and love and hugs to all of ya.

I am 4 weeks post op and I am able to eat almost anything. I have tried
steak(chewed really well). I eat chicken, and ground (very finely) beef.
I have lost 23 lbs. I have not lost any weight in a week. I have started walking
2 times per day and also I have made myself eat 3 meals a day. They are made of
protein only. I have my vitamins 3 times per day and my my protein shakes.
I am worried about not losing any weight in a week. Do you think that it is
because my body is just trying to catch up with me. I don't feel bad, nor have
I had any trouble. I have not dumped, nor had any vomiting. I do stay away from
bread.
Is there anything I can do to get this weight loss started going again. It is
my time of the month and I may have actually lost some more weight, but I am
retaining a little fluid.
Please help..

Probably every one of us on this list has been where you are, so stop

but protein, increase your water intake and increase your exercise.

questions??

I have a dumb question about dumping. If (God forbid!) you do dump,
can you count the protien you ate at that sitting as part of your
protein for the day? I've not heard this covered before. Also when
you use milk is it skim, 1%, or will 2% work? I go for my pre-op
this Thurs. and plan to ask them also. They are supposed to give me
a packet with answers to a lot of questions but it is interesting to
see what the diffferent Drs. recommend, too. Thanks for all the

Hi all, just wanted too give evryone my 1month post -op visit weigh
in results, started at 377lbs and am proud to say I weighed in at
321lbs yesterday 9/9/03, had surgery on 8/13/03, so 56 ponds todate
thats right around 2 pounds a day. Feel much better then I ever have
and cant even imagine losing so much so fast, although I do have
better days then others, all in all I feel real good.As for my diet ,
well was so afraid that i would "stretch "out my pouch , that my
surgeon says im not eating enough, that I need to eat more like 6
times a day in small portions, so 6 meals a day it is.I can eat
potatoes,apple sauce, soft cooked noodles,cottage cheese,cream
soups,scrambled eggs,rice,steamed veggies,canned fruit,and pretty mch
just drinking water still, afraid to drink something my stomach will
reject.Did my protein drinks for first week and a half, and now when
i go to do one, it makes me want to throw up, so im at a lost as what
to do for them, doctor says try getting my proten thru other
foods. The only thing I wish, is that I could be full of energy
everyday, I just never know if im gonna be weak one day or the next
so I have been unable to really set any time frame as too when ill
be 100%. My dr laughs says, relax dude you have only been out 3 1/2
weeks and are doing very very well. =)

Katie; I do not see how you failed.... you are pulling yourself out of your
bad choices and replacing them with good choices... how is that failure. As
long as you are still losing, and alive... than you have not failed! Life
is hard, and with our food issues it makes it very difficult to change....
we have to do it one day at a time. This is a lifetime of good eating...
not a year, not a month. As long as you keep looking forward and try to
change your bad habits you are totally successful in my opinion. Good Luck!

Re: Frustrated and Mislead (Insurance)

2007-08-23 12:56:11

Hey Kristen
I am right there with you. I have been denied 2ce by my insurance
and I took it to the State Insurance commission where I won and now
the insurance company is appealing the decision.
Here's my advice for you:
1. Call the insurance company and ask them to fax you a copy of
their requirements for Gastric Bypass Surgery.
By law they have to give it to you. Read through it carefully and
when you appeal make sure you stress that you meet each of their
criteria for surgery. If they need 6 months of diet history show
them the 6 months. Get letters from WeightWatchers or previous
doctors whatever.
2. Speak to the Grievance and Appeals department of your insurance
company and find out who is dealing with your appeal. Become buddies
with the person on the phone and get their support that way you kind
of have a way of knowing what is going on in the insurance company.
3. Find out from the person in the Appeals department what the next
step is if this appeal is denied. My case manager at the State
Insurance Commission told me that a very large percent of appeals are
denied because they want to see if you are interested for real and
how far you will go to have the surgery. I know it is sick but they
want you humiliate you into giving up. (I weigh 350 lbs and sent
them pictures of me in my bathing suite trying to gross them out and
say yes. Didn't help me much but they know no matter how humiliated
I am I will not stop fighting them.)
4. DON'T GIVE UP!!! Don't let them make you feel so humiliated that
you would rather give up than try again. I went to the newspapers
and TV stations down here in Ft Lauderdale. The local NBC station is
doing a story on me (in my bathing suite!) to try and help me. A lot
of companies are trying to deny as many people as possible so don't
let them get you to give up!
Fight till the end and email me if there is anything I can do to
help: RaviGold@...
GOOD LUCK!!!
Love Vicky

Eating

2007-08-23 09:53:00

Hiya everyone,
I may have brought this up before, so bear with me if I did and it is just
annoying. I didn't mean to post twice. I since May have had problems with
stress and with that stress just came a sense of disinterest in the plan and the
bariatric way of life. I just didn't wish to keep up my walking or any type of
exercising, my protein, my water, or liquids of any kind - except orange
juice - apple and grape if I could get my hands on it. Have any of you had this
problem? I remember someone said I "failed" - I don't know what to think
really. Did I fail? I stood up for one family member in this group who may or
may
not be here any longer and said she did not fail when one said she did. Yet,
did I fail? I wish to be honest. I want to say no - I had problems - and I
want to say yes - I got off the plan and lifestyle and now I need to get back
on and keep a watch for those times and "places" where I might be triggered
off my eating. I just don't know! I am very confused. I guess I am asking YOU
to make that decision for me - am I a failure or am I not. I don't mind your
opinions - though I'm sensitive - well that is for me to deal with. Failure?
I just can't bring myself to say yes, but I can't bring myself to say no.
Because I am loosing weight. I am getting back to my protein. We just had a
party and I've GOT to get off soda, but I do drink water. I am getting back to
not drinking for 30 minutes after a meal or any type of solid food - except
for maybe one drink or sip of something to "help it go down" or if my mouth is
dry. I just wished to share this. If you wish to write me personally my
address is PrincessandHope@... - no harrassment please! Or you can here.
:)
Thank you my family for listening. And I hope I get some answers. Much
love, be well, take care!

Dumping

2007-08-23 00:52:53

Ugh! I can relate! My one and only experience with dumping occurred with
peanut butter also! But I was using the sugar free all natural peanut butter.
The directions said to mix the oil that separates and eat. Well, apparantly it
is a good idea for us to pour off the excess oil that collects in natural
peanut butter to avoid being sick. I was at work too, and it was so bad I had
to
leave. I almost puked all over myself as I was driving home, it was
horrible. I finally was able to go to sleep and about 4 hours later i felt
better,
but so drained. I seriously would have crawled under my cubicle and laid down
if i thought i wouldn't get fired for it. It was the most miserable thing that
has ever happened to me. I did buy some more peanut butter, but I haven't
had the guts to try it again, even though i know it was the oil taht made me
sick.
As for things with sugar, I operate onthe assumption it will make me dump and
I avoid it. I have not had anything with sugar (other than natural) since my
surgery, which i'm very proud of :)
But anyways, i've gone on long enough... past my bedtime anyways!

Frustrated and Mislead (Insurance)

2007-08-22 18:43:28

Hiya everyone! I know I havent posted much - dont really have a lot
to say - just like looking at yalls suggestions.
Here is my plight. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Back
at the end of December I was trying to have the lap band. They
denied it but said that I was eligible for the gastric bypass. So, I
took about 6 months and did the research on that. During this time
frame all the people at BCBS were telling me that I wouldnt need a
letter for this new doctor. Could you believe they turned around and
DENIED ME! Boy was I mad! I found a doctor I trusted, went to
nutrition classes, took a walking class (that I used for a college
credit too;-) and then went and had them resubmit my request to have
this doctor do it. I talked to my employer and they told me that I
coudl appeal it as many times as I wanted to. But BCBS told me that
I could appeal it only once - and then my company could appeal it if
it was denied again. The reason they told me that I was denied was
because I didnt have documentation from a doctor stating that I had
a supervised weight loss in the past 6 months - i mean sheash! thats
what got me here in the first place lol. Now Im struggling with the
surgeons staff - they dont seem like they really want to help now
that I have been denied. ANY suggestions? I dont want to screw up my
one chance - I have done to much now to give up.
Thanks,
Kristen

Another recipe that is mmm mmm good

2007-08-22 09:51:35

Hello All
OK here goes another food that I have tried tonight .... canned cling peaches
:) I drained a can of cling peaches that were in light syrup and I rinsed
them off and I put about a half a cup of peaches in a bowl. I added some
cinnamon and one packet of Splenda to the peaches and just mixed it all together
lightly and I ate it and it was soooooooooo good. I ate it all up and even had
the audacity to get a little more :) I love fruit and I am so grateful that I
can still enjoy it. The mixture is not too sweet but just sweet enough with
the cinnamon to taste like a peachy cobbler minus the dough LOL. If you want
to try it enjoy :)
Oh yeah and I am losing inches like crazy I measure myself all over every
week along with stepping on the scale and it is amazing how the numbers keep
going down. LOL I have always seen myself as a big loser :) hahahahaha

What about at home recovery?

2007-08-22 02:16:05

Hey guys,
What about recovery at home? I live alone and am unsure who would
help me. I am not sure anyone in my family has time or would want to.
Besides I would be too embarassed to have my sisters was little
peewee! Or my bro for that matter, HOLY COW would he ever freak out
if I asked him!
How much help do you think I will need? Obviously everyone is
different. My doc wants me to have it done open but I wonder if the
recovery picture would change if I had it done lap? I may be putting
the cart before the horse also. I need to ask my insurer if they
cover any type of home care for post op. I have bluecross blueshield
of Minnesota PPO. Anybody had any experience with these folks.
I also read the other post about physician assisted dieting attempts.
I also have had none. My old leech tossed me a diabetics exchage diet
book once would that count.
Oh did I mention I had made up my mind I want to have the surgery?
I am not the Walrus and I most assuredly am not the eggman!
but kookookachoo anyway ;)

Thanks for the advice. I actually contacted Walter at ObesityLaw.Com

Chris,
I sure hope someone else answered this for you. Sorry I have not
been on the site in a while. I didnt have a choice, I had said I
wanted the proximal, but when it came down to it, he did what he
felt i needed. I was upset when i heard this. I wanted the least
amount as possible, thinking it would cause less malabsorption,
which i am sure is true of a proximal than a distal. I dont know
all the details, but i am sure you Dr knows what he wants to
perform, so ask him what his plan is and why. Let us know what he
says. I would be curious.

Dear Vanessa,
I think you're doing better than you think you are. How much protein
(between powder and milk, if you use milk) do you get from your shake? 2
oz. of Tuna is worth about 28 grams by itself. 4 oz. or so of pintos is
worth another 9 grams and if you had any cheese with them, that boosts it
higher. I suggest losing the carbs if at all possible (other than the ones
from the fruits). This will leave you more room for fluids and proteins.
Ideally, if you can up your protein by having two shakes per day for a while
plus the little food you're eating, it will help you dramatically. Also,
whatever you're mixing your shakes with counts toward your fluid intake as
well. It's not just straight ounces of water.

Hi Debbie, I had my surgery June 10th. I tried so hard today to
drink the water but its sooo hard for me. I drank 30 oz so far so I
need to drink 30 more before i go to bed. I am eating about 30 grams
of protein a day. My big problem is carbs. I love carbs. If carbs
caused dumping I would be in heaven. You are a true inspiration. I
need to lose 30 more pounds and my goal is Dec. I only did cardio at
the gym today and did a shake for breakfast, lunch was tuna and
watermelon and dinner ws pintos and cheese. What else besides water
do you recommend? I drink all my vitamins and I feel great.

Re: Chelle - - - Deb

2007-08-18 00:15:46

I thought of that. Except I haven't had my current PCP for two
years, I don't think anyway. LOL I've had my ob/gyn since 2000 and
they knew I was n a diet last year. I talked to them today and they
told me since they are getting a lot of requests for letters that he
will only write one for me if I have had medical problems relating
to my weight. I have but he NEVER told me it was related to my
weight. I had a lot of trouble finding a PCP afer moving here 5 1/2
yrs ago. I now have found a great Dr who supports my decision to
have this surgery. I will talk to him though and tell him what I
got back my insurance see what he says or suggests. Maybe he can
contact my ob/gyn and convince him to write a letter for me. My PCP
is a great guy and will help me if I ask, I know he would. So i am
feeling better about this completely.
Although now I feel like I don't have my dh's complete support
anymore since this has come up. He suggested I take the two years
and follow a supervised diet with my Dr. Only thing is I am
mentally ready for this and it took me 3 years already to get to
this point.
Thank you so much for your post. It has reassured me even more
which is what I need.

Dear Tanja,
I'd really question the removal of healthy organs because of the
"possibility" of problems down the line. Though the appendix is an organ we
can absolutely live without, the gall bladder does have a function and you
can be given a prescription for Actigall (generic is ursiodol) which you
take 2xs per day for six months and it dramatically decreases the formation
of gall stones. I'd really be wondering about that, unless it's more
practice for their surgeons performing operations. Somehow, I think I'd
want someone with longer surgical experience performing this surgery and
again, I'd be very leery of having a working organ removed for
"convenience." Hope you don't mind my opinion. Also find out what kind of
follow-up and support you will have as a post-op...
Good luck in your decision.

Are you saying they remove the old stomach? I haven't

Personally, if I were a guinea pig, I wouldn't want

Tanja,
I for one will tell you that if they take out the gallbladder at the
same time do it! I did not have any problems with mine at all and
said "if it isnt broke dont touch it" and wouldnt let my doc take it
out....well now 9 months later after losing 140 lbs I have problems
with it and now have to have it removed next week. I wish I would
have let him do it. I dont want to go thru more surgery but I have no
choice. Granted this will be a piece of cake compared to the GP but
it still will be more sugery that I wouldnt have had to do if I wasnt
so pig headed about it 9 months ago! Ok...Ok now everyone that told
me to do it can say "I told you so"!
So let them do the gallbladder but the appendix??? That is very wierd
I think.

[Gastric_Bypass_Family] (Can Surgery bring this on??)

2007-08-15 15:48:52

Hi Kimberly~~
I'm new here and I have a history of sexual abuse... I
was in counseling before surgery and have had to
restart it just a few weeks ago...
I think that in my case, it wasn't the surgery that
brought it on, but the loss of weight (my "wall of
fat", as I refer to it in therapy!), I used the weight
to protect me from men (or attention from men, really)
I hid behind "the wall of fat" and when it suddenly
disappeared one day, I hit the skids! I have had
suicidal thoughts and panic attacks. I have been on a
roller coaster... I have been put on anti-depressants
and am seeking therapy. I have built myself a support
system of friends, but it is tough... I have a
repressed memory that is trying to break through and I
am very frightened at what it is and how I will deal
with it...
Oddly enough, I seem to have no problem with attention
from men, now!! LOL, I went to my high school reunion
on Saturday and was treated like the belle of the
ball!!! None of the women would speak to me and ALL of
the guys were vying for my attention!! LOL, I was
flirted with by so many that I had my choice of
escorts for breakfast afterward... I took three of
them with me!! LOL...
I feel it is completely due to just dealing with
unresolved memories of my abuse and my feelings about
my father(abuser). But YMMV!!

And I hope ur doing great with your surgery ordeals..
I don't know what's going on with me.. I know I'm a week late.. ( the female
thing ) from last month, but I am so moody and crabby all the time... ( Fly
off the handle crazy anymore.. I'm even afraid to go to Bunco! ) Now that's
bad.. Because of my moods.. My anxiety's up, and I just feel icky and nautious..
Sometimes without the throwing up and my depression's unreal.. No cramping, but
my skin has broke out from the hormones.. I don't want anyone to come over
anymore or to call me and I definitely don't want to be touched lately.. In
fact, I've been having flashbacks of when I was violently gang-raped 11 years
ago
for the last week and a half, on and off.. I get up so many times in the
middle of the night.. I know it sounds nuts, but can surgery bring this on??? I
don't know what's going on with me, but it's so real... I had to even contact a
counselor.. I go to see her for the first time this Wednesday.. I wouldn't have
done this before, but I feel like I can have a nervous breakdown at anytime..
Well anyway, if any of you have experienced this, please let me know..

Well I've only lost 47 lbs.according to the scale, but one thing is for sure,
losing beats gaining.. lol.. Hear me out y'all!!! I think I've hit a
temporary plateau, but I know that it's coming off because I can tell in inches
too.. So I'm pretty happy overall.. Still sick, but happier that my weight is
coming down.. I'm built to have a more defined waistline, and that's why I can
tell there.. I've always been somewhat smaller in that section than elsewhere..
I've always had bigger hips, legs, and thighs... an average bustline... Well
actually, I've always been a C cup until I put on alot of weight, and then I
became a D cup, so now I'm back down to a C... Is that a good thing, or not???
lol.. I want to keep my chest... lol.. I don't want to lose EVERYWHERE... Well

Dear Jan,
We are about the same time out (I just had my year last week) and we are the
same height. My goal is 165 and I'm told that this is a very reasonable one
by my doctor. I still want to lose 70 more lbs., but I started at 386 so
even our losses are close. I've got quite a few people in my in-person
support group who have gotten to the goal they wanted and then kept losing,
and then there are those that never quite make it to their goal. Everyone
is individual and it's hard to answer that facet of your question. However,
if you find that you reach and pass your goal, and you keep losing, what
I've been told is that you decrease your protein intake somewhat and
increase your carb intake until you find the place where you actually
settle. Seems pretty easy to me, but I'll have to judge how easy it really
is once I hopefully get there. Great job on your weightloss, kiddo.

Misti

2007-08-13 10:49:54

Dear Misti,
Yes, not getting protein will definitely slow or stop your weight loss. The
old diet mentality would tell you that to eat less means to lose more. With
this tool we've been given, you have to get a lot of protein in, in order
for the weight loss to progress. You also need to stay very hydrated
(difficult to do at first, I know) but try your best. Ideally you want to
get to 64 oz. of fluids (water, flavored water, crystal light, decaf coffee
or tea, protein drinks, soups, etc.) daily. You also need vitamins and
supplements. This is not an easy thing you've done, but with the passage of
time it will be better/easier for you.
If you are eating things that are too hard on your stoma/pouch too quickly
you CAN cause problems for yourself. Please be honest with your doctor and
let him know what you've done so if there are problems they can be
addressed.
That being said, losing 29 lbs. (if I added right) in a month is nothing to
sneeze at! That is a wonderful weightloss for 4 weeks out. I had the dream
that I'd be in the hospital and come out thin. Ain't gonna happen that way,
but when have you ever lost that much so quickly before? All things in
perspective sweetie.

Epidural?

2007-08-12 21:39:04

While doing research I discovered that the hospital I'll hopefully
having surgery at offer the option of having an epidural. Has anyone
else used this while having gastric bypass? I've had 2 myself for c-
sections and they were excruciatingly painful to get in and the last
time the doctor told me I have very little space between my vertebre
and that's why they were having such a hard time getting it in.
The more reading I do, the more questions I have!
~Tanja

I've been researching

2007-08-12 15:24:54

the hospital and the surgeons where I'll hopefully be having my
surgery. Went to their web site and to my surprise discovered that
MAMC (army hospital) doesn't offer lap only RNY. They are currently
doing a few select patients lap (as training for their docs) but I
don't meat their criteria. Then while reading their info on the
surgery it states that they prefer to take out the gallbladder and
the appendix while they're doing the bypass, just to prevent the
patient having further surgery for that later down the line. Plus
after they create a new "juice glass size" stomach they remove
the "old" one. I've never had gallbladder problems, no mattter the
weight I've been, but both my brother and sister have. And I'm not
even positive what the appendix does, but it just seems odd to me to
take it out now just in case it "might" cause problems 2-5-10 years
down the line. The good news I found is that their waiting list is
shorter then I was originally told and that at my BMI they might bump
me to the top of the list.
I have my consult with the surgeon on the 30th and after reading
their information I definately have some more questions to add to my
list to ask him.
~Tanja

I might have hit a stumbling block.

2007-08-12 13:15:48

I sent my insurer an email last night asking some questons since I
keep forgetting to call them asking some questions just to prepare
myself. They sent me a list of what they require before they will
approve anyone for this surgery and one is weight loss attempts
supervised my a physician. Here is what it says word for word:
4. Non-surgical methods of weight reduction must have been
unsuccessfully attempted for at least two years prior to surgery
(These weight loss attempts must be under a physician's supervision.)
I never had a physician supervision on any of my diets. I mean they
knew and my weight was of course documented in my records when i
would go in for others reason. Man o man! I am worried now! What
if they deny me for this reason? I may cry.

Misti, please don't get mad at me for being blunt. First of all, 29lbs in a
month is wonderful! Before surgery, I bet you wouldn't have been able to say
that. Now, if the doctor told you to stay on liquids for a certain amount of
time, why didn't you? You can't expect this tool to work if you abuse it.
Don't think you got the short end of the stick due to the amount of
intestine bypassed. You have to work with the tool for it to work. It doesn
t matter if they bypassed 10cm or 300cm if you aren't going to follow the
rules and follow the doctor's orders. You're worried about "im going to be
the horror story u hear where someone only loses 40
pounds with this surgery". Well, you will be if you continue to disregard
the doctor's advice and all the rules that you are supposed to be following.
This surgery is NOT a quick fix. I really think you need to sit down and do
tons of research and get yourself in gear.

Go there, read that. And do more research. www.gastricbypassfamily.com has
tons of infomation for you. So does www.obesityhelp.com
Good luck, and I really do hope you get back on track. I'm sorry if I upset

Dear Vanessa,
Ok, first of all sweetie, how far out from surgery are you? That makes a
huge difference in how much you are able to intake. The first month is
usually practically a waste as far as getting your requirements met. I
think it's practically impossible, but after that, it SHOULD get easier.
You never answered about the amounts of protein you're eating or your
vitamins (I'm like a hound dog when I want answers... hahahaha. Don't mind
me).
As for the fluid intake, I do it in several ways. Yes, for most of us it's
minimum of 64 fluid ounces (I find that I do 120 or so for the most part
now). I drink all through the day and night. I keep a water bottle next to
my bed and if, for any reason, I wake up, I take a few swallows and go back
to sleep. Now, here's the problem with what you're drinking. First of all,
if you're drinking regular coffee (not decaf), it's a diuretic, so it
doesn't count toward your fluid intake. In order to get your fluid count
up, for every cup of regular coffee you drink, you have to drink twice as
much of the "good fluids" so I drink decaf or no coffee at all. Gotta save
room for my fluids.
When I wake up first thing in the morning, before my feet hit the floor, I
finish the bottle I took to bed with me (it's a 24 oz. bottle and I keep
track of how much I drink after midnight and count it toward this 24-hour
period). Then, as I'm getting my daughter ready for school, I fix myself a
protein shake made from 16 oz. of fluids (8 oz. lactaid, 8 oz. water) and 1
scoop of protein powder. This accomplishes a lot. The shake has a value of
30 grams of protein -- 23 grams from the scoop of powder, 8 grams from the
lactaid which equals 31, but we can't absorb more than 30 grams in 2 hours,
so anything above 30 is wasted and doesn't count). Anyway, within that
short time, I've gotten 1/2 my daily requirement of protein and I've already
drank, by 8:30 a.m., 36 oz. of fluids. I wait 1/2 hour and then I start
drinking my other fluids. Right now it's 9:50 a.m. and I've already had
another 24 oz. (I use the poland spring sports bottles that are 24 oz. or
the propel sports bottles, great flavors and also 24 oz.) By 1:00 when I
stop for 1/2 hour before lunch, I will have at least one other 24 oz.
bottle, bringing me up to 60 oz. of fluids. I'll have another bottle going
by 2:00 p.m. until I stop at 6:00 which is 1/2 hour before supper. Now I'm
up to 84 oz. Then, 1/2 hour after I'm done with supper, I start another
bottle, taking me to 108 oz. and most of the time I'll start another bottle
before I go to bed, bringing me to 120 oz. or so.
Don't forget though, I'm a year out now and it took me a while to get to
this point, but my skin is great, my hair, my nails, all the great benefits
you get from drinking water, I'm seeing. What I did to get started was I
would line up 3 bottles (24 oz. each) in the morning. I'd drink some from
each so that I had about 20 oz. left in each. I'd keep one with me and
throw the other two in the freezer. When I'd finish the first one, I'd grab
the second from the freezer and throw some regular water in on top of the
frozen. Then I'd drink that while it melted, then I'd do the same with the
3rd one later that day. That's how I got to me 64 oz. quickly. I also
never drank through a straw... caused too my gas and discomfort for me.
I do lots of things to make the fluids bearable. I eat soups (more fluids
and sometimes protein too), drink the flavored waters like fruit 2-0,
crystal light, propel (my absolute favorite is their black cherry), plain
water with Davinci syrup added to it, sf frozen ice pops, etc. It doesn't
have to be water as water. Make it as tasty and interesting as you can, and
you'll see that you are able to increase your levels.
Now tell me about the other stuff I wanted to know... hahahahaha. It all
works hand in hand you know... and it may be tough now, but I know you can
do it. I've got faith in you.

A lot of people hit a pleateau and just changing the
amount of exercise or water can help get past it.
Really, though, 30 lbs in 4 weeks is pretty darn good!
Could you have done that without the surgery? Also,
you may be eating too fast, which would cause the
stomach aches after eating.

NHP is appealing my win ... Can anyone help???

2007-08-10 12:30:12

Hi all.
I am sorry that I keep posting all my pre-op crap in the post op room
but I need to have my surgery!
I just spoke to Neighborhood and they are APPEALING the decision the
Insurance Commission made in my favor. It's like a F***ing never
ending nightmare.
I just don't know what to do anymore. I am running out of time! It
seems like they just want to fight me till the very bitter end. I am
so depressed and discouraged. I finally had some hope and now it's
gone.
The guy at the insurance commission told me they can appeal and if
they win the appeal there is nothing left for me to do. If they win
it's over. If I win this appeal then they can appeal it AGAIN. He
said the only option left to me then would be to take legal action
against them and I don't have that kind of money. I have been un-
employed for 15 months and can't get a job because I am so huge! Who
wants to hire a 350 lbs baby elephant?!?
Anyways. As always ANY ADVICE is appreciated. I called the lady who
is producing my story at NBC and am waiting for her to call me back.
I think I have explored every avenue open to me. I tried everything
I can think of. Can anyone think of anything else?
Let me know?
Thanks all
Vicky :o(

Need a little reassurance, please

2007-08-10 04:25:10

Hi, All. Hope everyone is well.
I am about 3 weeks shy of my 1-year wls anniversary. I've lost 141
lbs., from 319 to 178, and I feel so much better. I'm still
losing weight, sometimes without much effort. I'd kinda like to get
to where the charts say I should be, which is about 165 lbs.
However, too many people are now telling me that I need to stop
losing, or even pick up a few pounds. I still see myself as slightly
overweight at 5' 9" and 178 lbs. I'd appreciate it if some of you
could share your experiences with reaching goal weight, the tapering
off of weight loss, and maintenance. The weight loss does stop on
it's own, right?

Hi CJ,
I live in Gilbert. I'm hoping to have Lap RNY with Dr. Simons (works with
Newhoff). I just noticed today that Zahn is covered by my Insurance too. I was
looking to see who does the DS in Arizona. I read an article today that DS is
better then RNY, but I'm going to stick with the RNY since that's all I've known
about so far and I'm committed now. :) What are you getting from him? RNY or
DS? Dr Simons works out of Good Samaritan, but I don't think Zahn does. Too
bad we won't be in the same hospital. :) But, at least we'll be in the same
boat at the same time. :) Look forward to talking to you through this all.
We'll be at the same stages...yeah. :)

Fried Foods

2007-08-08 06:40:58

Actually Lori Anne, I had friend foods for the first time two weekends ago,
and suffered no problems at all. My mom had a "day of beauty" and a day spa
here and for lunch we went to an italian restaurant where we had an appetizer
consisting of friend calamari and zucchini and it was delicious.
Of course I wouldn't recommend this being a staple in a persons diet when
they are struggling with weight loss, but everyone's body is different and not
everyone has problems with fried foods. Some people don't even have problems
with sugar and sweets, so it is difficult to generalize.
In all honesty, having this surgery has not made that big of a change in my
life. In the beginning it was drastic of course, being a major surgery and
having to learn to re-eat. But I have been blessed in that I was never really
addicted to sweets, my weakness was always pasta and french fries. I have given
up french fries completely, and until 2 weeks ago I haven't had any fried
foods. However, my activities haven't changed, and I still have no problem
going
out to eat with friends or on dates. The only change that has really
occurred is in the amount of food I am eating. The other day I was with this
guy I
have been seeing and he ordered a pizza. I ate a piece, but it was just the
toppings and I left the crust behind. Last night he ordered more pizza (he
likes pizza lol) and I just said i wasn't hungry. So far I haven't even told
him
about my surgery.
Anyways, I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Of course I know that it is
going to require more work on my part as the amount of excess weight I have to
get rid of lessens. But I am willing to do what I have to now. Its amazing to
say I only have about 60 or so pounds to go... especially when I started with
needing to lose about 170lbs! But I now feel like anything is possible.
Everything in moderation...

Painful Periods and YUMMY Protein Drink

2007-08-05 11:43:02

Hi everyone :)
Started my period again today... Oh what joy! LOL - NOT! This is the
one thing that I hate about having had WLS. The cramping is back to
how it used to be when I was a teenager. Thank goodness I have quite
a bit of the Lortab left as Tylenol Gelcaps do nothing to even touch
the pain. Besides the pain, chances are that my weight loss will
also come to a screeching halt for a couple weeks. I sure hope not,
but I am prepared to accept this to be the case given that this is
exactly what's happened every month since my surgery.
On a great note, at yesterday's SoCal WLS Get-Together, Stacie-O
told me about how I could mix the Nectar Carribean Cooler with
Pinapple-Orange Crystal Light instead of just plain water to make an
Orange Julius tasting protein drink. I've had the Nectar in my
cabinet for the last month or so but didn't really like it as it was
too sweet and didn't taste quite like a Pina-Colada as I'd heard.
But this morning, my sweetie went to Ralph's (supermarket) and
picked up the Pinapple-Orange Crystal Light, and I am in bliss! It
is SOOO good! I am beyond excited about this because now, perhaps,
drinking the protein drinks/shakes (and getting in my protein) won't
be as much of a struggle!
The concoction is still very sweet, but it really tastes great and
has a wonderfully smooth texture. If you haven't tried Nectar or if
you have and didn't like it, try mixing it with the Crystal Light
and give it a chance!

Dear Vanessa,
You say that you are eating "small portions" of protein. You don't mention
fluids. If you're on a plateau, the way to break it is (1) eat more, not
less -- you should be eating minimum 60 grams of protein daily, if not
more -- do you know how much protein you're getting in? (2) you should be
consuming no less than 64 ounces of fluids through water, crystal light,
anything decaf, flavored waters like propel, fruit 2-0, soups, etc., and (3)
if your normal routine is to exercise 1 hour every day, three days per week
cut back to 45 minutes each. You just need to shake up your system. But
bear in mind that eating less never (with this surgery) will equate to
losing more. These are just suggestions that have worked for me and most of
my friends. Also, how ya doin' with vitamins, etc.?

carbs, fats and post rny

2007-08-04 18:21:27

As a post RNy i can tell you from personal experiance that full
fatted foods are a blessing now. I look for my menu choices to have
a high fat content because I NEED that fat now to keep those blockage
demons at bay. If my diet is limited to low fat foods, in a day or
two the internal works come to a total halt. I have been locked up
for better than a week just from being resistant to the idea and
refusing to believe what my body was telling me.
As a RNY person I can tell you that I do not digest those fats, they
go right on thru the system and back out, pretty much unchanged as
evidenced by 'oil slicks' or floating items in the toilet. So a
handful of mixed nuts that count as 200 cal with 150 of those coming
from fat I count as 50 calories. An entire bag of Just the Cheese
snack crackers has 300 calories 240 of those from fat...so I count 60
calories.
As a Rny patient my body does not digest fats because of the way it
has been rerouted inside. HOWEVER sugar and carbs are still FULLY
digested and every one of those calories counts. Hi carb items from
sugar or starches consumed in any quantity do make me break into a
sweat because my metablolism suddenly has a bunch of extra calories
to torture me with. I am below goal weight now and have made a
deliberate conscious decision to NOT lose anymore weight. If I do
not consume enough carbs my weight starts to drop again. The added
cals for the fats have no effect on my weight.
IF you are trying to continue your weightloss please look at your
food choices very carefully. Fat Free foods as produced in the US
add sugar or other carb 'enhancements' to make the food taste better.
They just give you more calories in an area where you still absorb
all of the calories. One of my co-workers is also RNY and got the
bright idea to start consuming alcohol which is nothing but liquid
carbs in a glass and managed to gain 37LBS in one month just from
that...all the rest of her diet had remained the same!
We are no longer NORMAL, we paid good money to have things changed
inside of us...we now have 2 major things going for us...we cant eat
very large quantities and we dont digest fats. Might as well make
the most of that
