Re: DOES SOMEONE KNOW????

2007-06-30 22:00:25

Rosario,
I found a site that had some information on the disorder. Its spelled
Achalasia. (Who could spell that right??? :)
Achalasia is a disorder of the esophagus (the tube that carries food
from the mouth to the stomach). The esophagus is less able to move
food toward the stomach and the valve from the esophagus to the
stomach does not relax as much as it needs to during swallowing. This
relaxation is needed to allow food to enter the stomach.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000267.htm
I can understand why doctors would be wary of doing the surgery.
Hopefully, there will be someone who can help her.

2007-06-28 08:57:02

I miss reading and writing on here for the pass 5 days. You guys were right I
wasn't ready for the surgery. God made it so I wouldn't have the surgery yet. My
son was into a dirt bike accident and almost lost his life in it. God was with
us. He is home now but he has alot more doctors to go to for surgery. He has 5
plates in his place and a broken collar bone if his friend didn't find him he
would of been dead. He had air going to his brain. The doctors plugged that up
too. He really crash his face. But with Gods help we will have our son back. God
moves in really good ways. My ex family ask when I was going to have surgery
cause I stayed with my son the whole time and I told them when God says it is
ok. He knew my time was here with my son. They told me they would be with me
too. I was a good mother to my kids. They found that out now? After 27 yrs. LOL.
My kids and my new husband was the most important people in my life. The family
is going to help with my son now so I can have the
surgery when the surgeon says so.
Thanks everyone.

place. We'd really like as many people as possible to join us since there aren't
many groups area this area for support/friendship. Hope to hear from you

New and have some questions.

2007-06-27 20:49:14

First I will introduce myself, I am Chelle and am 32. I am married
and we have 3 children. I have had a weight problem for the past 20
years, constaly trying to succeed with weight watchers. I have
finally decided on WLS. My dh and I have done a lot of research and
both feel this is right. Right now I am focusing on the future
after bypass surgery. Anyone here had it more then 5 yrs ago? How
are you doing? Maintaining or struggling again with your weight?
My biggest concern is 10 yrs from now. I do plan to ask these at my
consult but I wnated to hear it fron you.
I have scheduled my very first appointment, consult, for September
17th. I saw my PCP today about my blood pressure and my glucose
levels. He and I boht feel we need to get this all in my recoreds
before I see the Dr. I will actually meet my Dr on October 24th,
but before that I have a physical with my PCP on October 14th. I
was pleasantly surprised to find out today that my PCP Dr was
supportive in my choice. He said I was a perfect candidate and
perfect age for this surgery. He said he would do anything he could
to help me get approved. I have a recently family history of heart
troubles, high blood pressure and high cholesterol so we are gong to
nip it in the bud early for me. My brother is 34 and is already on
hihg blood pressure meds, has been for a few years now. He's not
even overweight, I don't want to go there at all. Things are
falling into place so easily starting with finally making this
decision.
So that is where I am. Just some background on me, I've just
started my journey and am excited about my choice.
TIA for all your help.
Chelle

Carol Matar/Lori Anne

2007-06-26 23:45:21

Dear Carol,
I've heard many, many people are told they have to lose some weight prior to
surgery. Some have been told 10 lbs., others 10% of their excess (my friend
Bill had to lose a tremendous amount in order to qualify). Sometimes the
reasoning is that it shrinks a fatty liver. Other times it's to see how
compliant you will be (they use this as a gauge for whether or not you'll be
compliant after surgery. They want success stories on their lists and if
you can't be compliant, it makes their chance of success less).
Thankfully my surgeon didn't require this because not only didn't I lose
weight pre-surgery, I gained eight pounds.
Dear Lori Anne,
Thank you my sweetest angel. You are a voice of inspiration on this board
sweetie.

2007-06-26 20:00:16

Hi all,
I just wanted to add here. I know I felt the same way about my weight loss. I
would encourage anyone who has no lifting restrictions to stroll down the pet
food aisle the next time you are at the grocery store and pick up a 20 pound bag
of cat or dog food. It somehow put things into perspective for me. That is an
incredible amount of weight. I think unfortunately we spend so much time
obsessing about the actual numbers that we lose sight of what awesome progress
we are actually making!!

I decided to place an ad for a mother's helper for a few hours per

so my little one will also have a playmate. I have been inundated
with responses. At $6.00 per hour, I feel this is worth it for my
peace of mind. After all, I will be saving on groceries!!

2007-06-25 08:06:24

I only lost 20 lbs in my first month and now I am 3 months and 3 weeks post
op and have only lost 50 lbs. I only needed to lose about 130 lbs before
surgery which is quite a bit less than most of the others who are losing so much
faster than I am. How much you have to lose definitely plays a part in how fast
you lose, especially in the first few months.

Hi Jill,
Having "been there" but now past the first couple of months preop
AND having had the opportunity to meet many people who've had the
surgery, I would say that 25 lbs lost the first month is the average
and NOT the 40 or 50 lbs we hear some report. I know that for
myself, I was stressing thinking I wasn't losing fast enough, but I
am now down 80 lbs in only 4 months. At the rate I'm going, if I
were lose just 10 lbs a month until I am one year post-op, I'd have
lost 160 lbs in my first year. And at least right now, I am still
losing 15 to 20 lbs a month, so it is possible that I could lose
even more. (I have a total of about 220 to 240 to lose.)
So hang in there, you are doing great!!!

I've heard that the blues is quite normal from 2-6
weeks. As far as the protein, if you can't tolerate
the drinks, just try eating high-protein foods (tuna,
eggs, etc) to get in your protein. Give yourself a
break from the nasty tasting drinks and try it again
in a couple of weeks. The whey brand is supposed to
taste okay. The carnation ones as well-although it
sounds like they don't have very much protein in them.

Hi Tess,
What do you mean by 'sugar no longer affects me'? Do you mean that
you can eat sugar without any problems? I don't know how much you
weighed to begin with but depending on your starting weight, age,
etc. some loose skin is inevitabale. I have read that insurance
usually covers removal of excess skin in some areas such as the
stomach. Ask your doctor about that:) Since you are worried now
about your diet I am wondering how much do you eat at a time, type
of food, and have you regained any weight?

Hi Kimmie,
I was just talking to my surgeon about that last week. She said that
it can vary by quite a bit. It can be as low as 6-7 lbs. I have a
friend who lost well over 400lbs, and his tummy tuck was huge. I
think he said it was about 45lbs of skin and fat that were removed.
So I guess it just depends on how much loose skin is there. I hope
this helps.

Re: Surgery is in One week-Yiiikes!!!

2007-06-17 11:00:25

-Ladybug, Beth, I am new here but, I had the RNY, back when they did
them open, the four inch inscions. I had mine 2 years ago Thursday
and I wondered what I got myself into for about three or four weeks,
because of the shock in life changes I guess! Then I started
shopping, wow, I will NEVER regret this surgery. It litterally saved
my life.In the hospital, right after, I wont lie, it was not pretty.
It hurt and they forced me to walk when I didn't think I could move!
I couldn't take the pain meds, because they kept putting them in the
stomach tube, but it wasn't seated right and all the meds and food
leaked out! That is very rare, and does NOT happen with the newer lap
style surgery. You will not remember the discomfort when your
daughter says you are pretty, when your husband brags on you to his
friends or when some guys wolf whistle or flirt! I don't! I had an
extreme case with many complications, I still lost weight, I still
have continued to lose for two years, I am sooo happy with almost
everything. You wont have my complications, so think how great it
will be for you! I posted before and after pics as Achaifa on group
photos, not in a file. Good luck, all my best wishes...I cannot wait
to see the new you in a few weeks! Fabulously exciting times are
about to begin!!! Tess

I wondered if there is anyone here who had their surgery a wgile
back? I had the rue-n-y In September of 2001, and am now facing a
whole new set of questions. Dumping from sugar, mine went away
recently and now sugar no longer effects me at all! Loose skin, no
matter what or how much exercise it wont firm up! How much should I
be able to eat and is that permanent? Anyone else this far post
surgery, I'd like to hear your experiences. Nice to meet everyone.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Braums

2007-06-16 08:39:58

Braums around here is a fast food/ice cream place. They started out as a
dairy and still milk their own cows and sell the milk. 8 ounces of braums milk
has 12 grams of protein. Its a lot fresher too because it is milked from the
cow one day and on the store shelf the next day. I get the fat free version
and its thicker and richer than even regular 2%. I love it. Its too bad that
you guys up north are deprived of Braums :(

Photo Update

2007-06-16 07:53:13

Ok, I've updated my photo file (ToiBox) showing pics from pre WLS, 5
months post, and 8 months post. I know for me, looking at
progression or before and after photos of successful WLS patients was
a big motivator, so I hope mine do more than just elicit giggles from
y'all, LOL.
Its funny, Its getting less and less painful to look at my pre-op
pictures, but now I look at them and see just how uncomfortable I was
in that body. I imagine how I must have looked walking (lumbering is
a better word), trying to stand up, trying to go potty... its such a
distant memory now, but I know I'll never forget how life was at my
heaviest and I'll NEVER take my health for granted again.
I have curves now and don't have to dress in the biggest drapiest
clothes I can find, thinking that maybe they will hide my weight
somehow. My mind still tells me I have to cover up, but I'm working
on this part.
Blessings to you all.

Diarrhea

2007-06-15 20:32:18

Never did I think I would be having so much trouble with my GI tract
post surgery as either I hadn't paid attention or there wasn't much
info.
I posted about two months ago about severe constipation and
was "normal" for a month or so. For the last 10 days or so, I have
been plagued with diarrhea and cramps.
Additionally, I have virtually NO appetite and really nothing tastes
good. More than one or two bites of any kind of meat nauseates me.
For breakfast I am having one protein shake. Lunch today was three
small bites of tuna fish. Dinner was three small bites of salmon.
I'll have another protein shake.
My surgeon said I could take some Imodium but that doesn't seem to do
much.
Has anyone else gone through a "spell" like this? I don't feel sick
but I really don't like food at all. I wasn't like this last month.
I am discouraged - can anyone relate and offer some encouragement?
Thanks.

Dear Ami,
That's an awesome amount of protein in milk. Where is that available? (I
never heard of it before but I'm in the northeast where milk is only 7 or 8
grams of protein to 7 or 8 ounces... hahahahaha).

New Tool by Bruce U. - Chart-Graph & Report... Check it Out!

2007-06-13 15:49:47

http://www.thinnerself.com/files/Expect_Chart.htm
Hey Folks,
I would like to invite you to check out this new tool that I have
created and have available on my website. It is free... just a way
for me to try to help others along this journey.
I am pretty new here and kind of stay in lurk mode... but appreciate
this group and the wonderful website.
The Tool allows you to track your weight loss on a weekly basis, or
just project your weight loss over a period of time. Also, Long term
post ops - Say you want to see what percentage of excess weight you
actually lost, you can put in your start weight and, for the Weeks,
type in 78... then hit Calculate Percent... It will tell you what
percentage of loss you attained. There is a Create Report Button
that will then generate a graph that will show you the low and high
weight loss expectations and where you fit in.... In addition, it
will generate about 5 pages worth of data all about you. The idea
here is to help folks set proper expectations or let folks know what
they can expect from the surgery. I had a lady who was very
disappointed that she had not lost all of the weight she expected...
she told me that she was soooo thankful for finally realizing that
she was not a failure at WLS... she lost 78% of her excess weight,
but felt that way because she had not lost 100%... she said she now
realizes that she is actually above normal... That meant a lot to
me... I hope this helps you too...
The data that you input is saved to cookies on your own computer, so
every time you return to the site from your computer, it should
retain the information so you don't have to retype it every time.
Play with it, enjoy it... and let me know what you think... How many
things are free in this life... :-)
Thank You,
Bruce Underwood

PS. I still have a few things to do on it and I want to include a

know... thanks

Re: Optifast vs Surgery

Jess I wouldn't give up on surgery yet. Isn't optifast a liquid diet
program? I would be fearfull that after I lost weight I would go
back to the same old eating habits. Double check with people and
friends around you. see if they can help out a day or so here and
there. Is day care an option? I wish you the best.

I am so happy, too!

2007-06-13 14:07:07

Congratulations Wolfie.
I just had my 6 week blood work done, and the results are great. I,
too, was taking 7 pills a day for Diabetes preop, and none since
surgery, but my sugar is normal. My cholestrol is about one half
what it was, despite taking one pill per day instead of three. My
triglycerides are lower than they have ever been, by far. My blood
pressure med has been cut in half, and My coronary risk ratio is less
than average, formerly twice the normal risk. I had surgery for
medical comorbidity reasons, and it sure has worked! Plus, I also
gave away a load of clothes yesterday, and need to go shopping.
For any pre-ops looking at GB for medical reasons, I hope this helps

2007-06-12 09:38:43

Hey guys,
For all of you out there still contemplating wether or not surgery
is for you I just wanted to tell you how awesome I feel! I had my
surgery June 6th, 2003 and I have lost a total of 110lbs. now! At 31
years old I have more energy than I ever thought possible....I
excersize everyday and do water aerobics and ride my bike with the
little girls I nanny for! If someone had suggested a bike ride 3
months ago I would have cringed and laughed right out loud at their
stupidity....but I can't get enough now! Things are changing soooo
fast and I am sooo excited! I am going to school to get my teaching
degree and I finally feel like life has begun. I went through my
closet the other day and got rid of a TON of clothes and it was the
best feeling to know I was NEVER gonna need them again. It is all so
new. I wish everyone who wanted the surgery could have it! I feel
like I have been given a precious gift! Even though I had a few minor
complications....I would go through the pain of surgery a thousand
times over to be where I am right now!
Now.....if I could just find a man............hahahahahahahaha
Love and luck to you all!

I am on this liquid vitamin called Miracle 2000. Everyone says it is the
best. I've been taking it now for over a week (had surgery on 9/22)and each
time I take it is worse than the last. My wife says stick with it until it
is gone especially since it costs $30 a bottle (month supply) but I don't
think I can stomach it any longer. I am gagging when I take it. They
straight up lie to you on the bottle and call it "great tasting". I'm sure
it is "great tasting" if you like to drink sewer sludge. It is awful. I
can't even smell it without shuddering. Is anyone else on this crap? How do

There was a couple that the Seattle Times had been

they scheduled their surgeries 1 day apart to make

I was taking glucophage xr 500mg. 1000mg at evening meal and glyburide 5 mgs
two bid and the insulin along with it. I still take the insulin but I don't
know that I should. It is only a few points difference before the shot. This
sugar problem is the one big deal that made me decide to do this surgery for
myself. I am just so happy...Now that I have jumped up and down and screamed to

I have read and reread information on a million different sites it

recall reading about a clothing exchange where you can donate you
clothes as you outgrow them to other WLS troopers who may be needing
those sizes. I can not remember where I found that and can not come
across it again. If anyone knows what I am talking about and where I
can go to get more info, I would appreciate- It sounds like a great

Yeah Debkroll I saw ET and don't forget the Sharon Osbourne had Lapband
surgery many years ago to lose weight and plus she has had so much plastic
surgery
to recreate her body it would make you faint LOL. Yeah Roseanne had it done
but how long ago because it looks like she is one of the type who did not
really change the eating habits because she is still obese, and yes Randy from
American Idol is losing weight really fast and you can really see it in his face
a
lot, I guess he got sick and tired of all the fat jokes from Simon and
contestants who lost:) Oh yes and Jennifer Holiday for those who remember her
from
Broadway had it done a really long time ago she used to be 400 lbs+ and she
still looks great nice and slim now and I also believe that the singer Kelly
Price had it done because she lost a remarkable amount of weight it seems almost
overnight:) Wow does it make the surgery socially acceptable now that Celebs
are all getting some "work" done now LOL. Ladies and Gents I guess we are
traveling with the "IN" crowd now lolololol.

2007-06-04 16:33:51

I KNOW THIS IS A SIDE AFFECT FROM THE WLS...HAS ANYONE HAD THIS
HAPPEN AND HAVE YOU TAKEN ANY VITAMINS TO HELP WITH THSI? I HAVE
EXPERIANCED THIS SINCE ABOUT MY 5TH MONTH AND STILL DO AND THIS IS MY

Re: Tia, your questions about plateaus

Beth:
Thanks for your response (and example). I did somehow manage to slowly
drop 5 lbs last week (which makes 30lbs gone on MY scale). The best
thing, however, is that my immediate pre-op clothes are hanging on me!
I wore 3Xs (which were baggy so that I could "grow into" them) and my
24s were starting to get a little snug across my belly; now the 24s
hang and the 3Xs looks hilarious on me!
Actually pulled on a pair of 1X pants yesterday; they were loose in
the legs!!!! But were a bit snug in the elasticized waist....
So, even if I'm not losing the lbs as fast, looks like I'm losing inches!
Regards, ShanaLee

Jill,
When mixed with 6oz of skim milk, the Carnation Instant Breakfast has 10 grams
of protein.
I started at 286. At my two week check, I had lost 22 lbs. I see my surgeon on
Thursday so I am curious to see how much more I've lost.

For right now....

2007-06-03 20:16:59

For right now I have to admit...I am enjoying not staying hungry and living
in the refrigerator scarfing down food like there is no tomorrow. I like that
it only takes a little bit to satisfy me. And believe me I am a food addict.
That will never change! But this tool I have chosen to make mine is something
that I know is up to me to make work to my advantage.

2 cups of milk? How long does it take to get all that down? I agree,
that really does boost the grams up.

am not really good about drinking my protien or taking my vitimans either. I
have always had a issue with pills....icky. They ones I take are the sameone
as Carney Wilson and I have found a fruit protien drink you mix with water. It
is pretty good as far as taste and is sold by a husnad and wife team that had
the surgery themselves.
Hi Lisa
You really must get on top of the vitamin issue or else you may be setting
yourself up for plenty of health troubles for the future. Losing the weight is
fantastic but remember without your health nothing absolutely nothing else
matters. I hate taking pills too but I simply do what my dearly departed momma
used to do for me I crush them up put them on the spoon add a little juice or
water swallow it and chase it all down with tasty juice LOL try apple juice
with 50 percent water 50 percent juice to take your vitamins. I take what my
surgeon gave me after surgery Centrum Adult vitamins with Lycopene they are
totally crushable and easy to swallow afterward and it gives me the full range
of
vitamins my body needs. Sweetheart you had surgery to help save your life now
do what is needed for your body and do it everyday. You don't want to start
having neurological problems as a result of vitamin deficits like B-12 and
others. Before we could simply get most of these vitamins from our foods and
our
bodies could utilize it as needed now our bodies can only use but so much so
we must supplement.
Good Luck

Call your HR person on Tuesday see if she can get you a copy of your benefits or
even if your benefits are on line. I know with my dh's company all it it was
online, so that was an easy access for me. Then you can put in where it does
state what you need to qualify and then put your points beside the requirements.
I hope I am making sense to you. Good Luck!

I drink my Carnation instant breakfast with 2 cups of Braums milk which makes
my protein drink 29 grams of protein. Plus it goes down a lot better than
the other I have tried.

Carnation instant breakfast

To all who are drinking this stuff,
I was told by my surgeon that this was okay for the first two weeks, but if
you read the label, you'll see that it (each packet) only has 4 or 5 grams
of protein (so if you're adding powdered milk, you're boosting it by about
another 7 grams). It's not the best of choices, but it's okay for a start.

hi, melissa
i got 2 letters from the insurance company - one stated "based on a review
of the documentation submitted, it has been determined gastric bypass is not
a covered benefit under your certificate of coverage. However, if you have
additional medical documentation which you feel will support the need for
further review on this determination, please submit that information to the
address listed above.
the next letter after one allowed over the phone appeal stated they received
my appeal on 8/22/03
at first they said i did not meet criteria and needed more information
right now i am about to write another letter and mail it to the place where
these letters came from. i just need all the info i can get......i cannot
find my booklet of what is covered and what isn't but i called and asked
them b4 starting all this and they read that it is a covered benefit if
determined by a doctor.
i definitely meet criteria:
bmi - 42.9
wt 252 lbs and 5'3"
19 illnesses listed with icd-9 codes listed with treatment by a physician
and medication for these
diet hx back to 1997
wrote a personal letter
i don't know what else to do besides write them and ask for specifics on the
denial and i'm including a photo -- i don't know what else to do.
is there any way you can email me privately with the clause in your book
since i'm pretty sure its exactly the same policy......

Re: Considering Laproscopic RNY/GPB

Hi AJ, I think having surgery is definitely worth looking into.
There are a lot of pros and a lot of cons that should be checked
out. Say a few prayers, do some deep soul searching, take the time
to do medical research, and keep posting and asking questions to
support groups. You'll find your answer. I wish I had taken the
steps you are now, when I was a lot younger.
