Sorry it has been so long

hey all
first and formost let me appoligize for not posting or replying to
anything in a long while i have had to deal with a few problems
one problem was school as some of you know school started on the
11th for me and i guess it was too soon for me to go back to doing
that sitting there for an hour or so about half killed me also the
school did not want to deal with any of my issues either being the
surg or my iep so yeah i had the last lunch of the day and there was
nothing they could do about it my lunch started at 1:30 thats a bit
long for me to have to wait teachers would not let me take a water
bottle as per drs orders and even with a note to the schoolso i am
no longer going to that school and i am now being homeschooled!
on tuesday of last week i started expierancing a horrible pain in
the top part of my insision and on thursday it started looking like
a blister so i went to the dr on fri and i was told i had an absess
i think thats how you spell it and my mom called my surgeons off
that day too and my dr has this habbit of calling me on saturdays
but hes said that its fat trying to get out as i am loosing it quite
fast he said that because i couldnt get rid of it fast enough throuh
natural ways (the potty way lol) that it was gonna find its own way
out so it decided to go out through my insision and man when the
nurse opened it it drained forever and still is draining and it is
quite nasty other tyan that i am doing just fine and i thank all of
you for being soo supportive always

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] 5 days out im alive but feeling dead

2006-12-31 18:57:41

Honey, I felt just like you.. I thought I had all the answers too and now, I
am out in the cold, except I'm not that lucky! I'm hotter than hell.. And I
thought, "what have I done to myself? WHAT HAVE I DONE??" I'm still going
through it.. My mother wants the surgery and it's soooooo hard to be supportive
when I feel like crap.. Physically and emotionally.. I'm hoping this is just a
couple month post-op depression and not one that's going to affect me for the
rest of my life. But others say it's the best thing they could have ever done..
I'm feeling alone here sometimes.. I'm sick and I wasn't physically hungry in
the beginning but now I am.. And I'm scared to eat.. I'm scared to get sick..
Hell, I'm even scared to leave home.. I'm scared of fainting and dehydration..
All I think about is food but I NEVER eat.. I do keep in fluids though and
some broths.. But that's about it besides the vitamins and Calcium.. Let's just
pray together that we get better and have great success.. That's the only
thing that get's me through is looking down the road.. to a successful future,
happier and healthier body.. If this doesn't happen, I don't know what.. Later.

Re: hi kim (Hey Lori!) And to the rest of the family..

2006-12-31 13:16:49

Hi Lori; Thanks for informing me.. I've kind of kept out of touch with
everyone lately because of my post-op traumas, but now I'm coming back around
some..
Is this common??? Or am I'm in a ballpark of my own???
Yeah, I have had some depression due to wls.. I am sick often. And I mean
OFTEN.. I've had infection and I've bursted open right where the bend of my
waist
is from cleaning my house.. But hey, life goes on.. I'm dealing with it.. I'm
taking my vitamins and calcium but I cannot keep anything down besides water
and broth.. They tell me to try eggs, cottage cheese, and mashed potatoes, but
they all make me sick too.. And I hardly eat but two bites before I'm
throwing up.. They say bland is good.. The blander, the better.. I've done
nothing
but bland and it's just not working.. The protein stuff I've completely gave up
on because I'm so sick of it by now.. And my doctor's advanced me but I cannot
eat anything and I won't even attempt either, because I have a FEAR that I'll
get sick.. And my weight loss has slowed as well.. I don't understand.. I'm
starving physically but I'm no longer dropping the weight. Everyone's worried
about me because they say I don't eat and I'm white as a ghost, but hopefully
this will pass shortly. I don't know how much more I can take.. I've had
fever, and I dehydrate very easily.. I'm scared to leave home because I have the
fear of getting sick or fainting in public. And I do believe this is affecting
me emotionally too.. I'm just praying that I'll get through it.. Thanks for
writing Lori.. It was quite considerate.. How are you doing yourself? Let me
know g/f. It was nice hearing from you..

In the beginning...
:-)
God populated the earth with broccoli and cauliflower and spinach, green and
yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and
healthy lives.
Then Satan created Tim Horton's and Baskin Robin's.
And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?"
And Man and Woman said "Yeah, and another one with sprinkles." And they gained
10 pounds. :-P
And God created the healthful yogurt that woman might keep the figure that man
found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and sugar
from the cane, and combined them.
And woman went from size 3 to size 9.:-[ So God said, "Try my fresh green
salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing and garlic toast on the
side. And man and woman had to unfasten their belts.
God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in which
to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken-fried steak
so big it needed its own platter.
And man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof. :-(
God then brought running shoes so that his children might lose those extra
pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so man would not have to
toil changing the channels. And man and woman watched TV and gained more pounds.
Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with
nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center
into chips and deep-fried them. And man and woman gained another ten pounds. :-P
God then gave lean beef so that man and woman might consume fewer calories and
still satisfy their appetite. And Satan created McDonald's and it's 99-cent
double cheeseburger. Then said, "You want fries with that?" And man replied,
"Yea! And super size 'em." ;-) And Satan said "It is good." And man went into
cardiac arrest.
God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.
And Satan created BC Medical Services Plan :-(

2006-12-29 10:21:05

From what I have read of all your experiences and problems, I wish I could
give you all my Dr.!! He gives you a lot of info up front and afterward
too. My surgery is to be on 9-15 but I already have a good idea of what to
expect for the most part. Not only that but he has Bariatric Buddies who
visit you in the hospital and you can call them for advice if
necessary--plus a nurse in his office has had the surgery and she offers her
phone number for you to call her with questions 24/7. He also has a monthly
meeting of patients where you can meet others and ask any questions you may
have at that time. He also (for those close enough) meets everyone who
wants at the mall every Sat. morning for a 2 mile "mall walk" where he
answers questions again. I believe Dr. Bosquez in Tulsa. Ok must be more
interested in his patients than most. I just wish I lived closer to him.
He also has some of the group who conduct a clothing exchange to let you
share smaller size clothes as you lose to still smaller sizes. Isn't that
great? I feel confident I will have lots of support from him. I learned
about him from a family of four who all had the surgery with him and lost
lots of weight. But even with all this I am grateful I found a site like
this to check into as I feel I will learn lots from what you all have to say
also. Thanks.

About the juice, you will dilute the juice with water so that it will be less
sugar content and you only drink half a cup. The 100% juice sugar content is
from the fruit so it is different then just having plain sugar. I had that same
question and that is what the nutritionist said. You will do great tomorrow
just remember to get up and walk, walk, walk, and make sure you sip those
liquids as soon as you have your leek test. Good luck and see you on the other

REFERENCING OPTIFAST: Jess...I went on Medifast, which is like Optifast
about 10 years ago. I was on it for three months, nothing to eat, only
drank Medifast and water and lost 80 pounds. After about 2 weeks, you
have no hunger and start feeling great. I still drink it for breakfast
every day as I really like it and use it as my breakfast. If you are
going to do it for a few weeks, you will lose quite a few pounds and you
should start feeling more energy. Good Luck...Carol

Take a picture of yourself in the car, in front of the car, driving

with the money you are saving on payments, insurance, gas, etc, go
to a nice warm tropical beach, or some other trip you have dreamed

Having surgery next month-Nervous-Plz reply

2006-12-24 02:42:52

Hello Everybody----First of all--I want to thank each & Every one of you who
asked me not to leave these groups because of that rude e-mail. I am Verrry
Happy & Thankful that I have ya'll!!
I am Very nervous because I am having surgery Sept. 10--I had Open VBG May 2001
& have had problems with it + I have gained my weight back so I am having it
revised to an OpenRNY. I am not Very scared about the surgery itself--I am
scared about gaining my weight back Again-----however-I am going to do any &
Eeeverything I can to keep from it, but I am just wondering what it is like--I
think the Dr. is bypassing around 75cm -maybe a little more-& I have got about
probably a little bitt more than 150 pounds. If any of ya'll have had this
revision or knows somebody that has--Let me know how You or they have
done.----Right now I have mixed emotions--I mean I do plan to have the
surgery--& My hubby, daughter & Most of my family-friends are happy I have
decided to do this---but my dad & a few of my friends Do not know why I'm having
it & they are afraid if I have problems eating--it cannot be re-done---I got
real sick after my VBG--& the Dr. has to loosen the band some--I could not even
hold down water. & some people are suggesting me have the Duodenal Switch but
#1. I don't think my Dr. does it &#2 I don't think my insurance covers
this----Infact I got denied at 1st I got denied & I appealed & finnnally got
approved to even have this RNY revision.
Ok---I will quit rambling on--But PLEEEAZE Pray for me---& If anyone can give me
Any information you may have on the Revision surgery from VBG to RNY. Or about
the RNY itself. Agin, my surgery is September 10 & I'm nerrrrvous!
Hugs to all!! May God Bless You Always! Love, Lori

A Question about Pepcid Complete?

2006-12-23 18:17:55

I have a question regarding taking Pepcid Complete. I am to take 2
tablets twice a day for at least up to the first year. I wanted to
know if anyone else's doctor advises this and or if any other type of
antacid is recommended by your doctor. Also if anyone else is taking
the Pepcid Complete is there a cheaper product that does the same
that anyone else knows of? Thanks for the info. Take Care...Kathy

An Interesting article about Ghrelin

2006-12-23 00:57:24

The Hunger Hormone
The United States is the fattest nation on earth. Two-thirds of
Americans are overweight. Nearly 59 million are considered obese,
putting them at risk for diabetes, heart disease and high blood
pressure.
We're all casualties of a battle between our genes and our fast food
culture. And now, it turns out we may be casualties of a hormone
called ghrelin.
Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. It's made in the stomach, and it
tells the brain when it's time to eat. Ghrelin doesn't cause
obesity, but scientists think taming it might help us get our scales
back in balance.
They're also investigating an opposite hormone PYY that makes
you feel full.
So, as 60 Minutes II asked this spring, what if we could take a drug
that would shut off our ghrelin or boost our PYY?
In labs around the country, the race is on to find out.
Correspondent Vicki Mabrey reports.

Has anyone heard of Post Op Biliary Stasis?

2006-12-22 20:30:57

Apparently when you reduce fat content from high to very low, you can
end up with biliary stasis. In other words, the gallbladder has
nothing to do because there are no fats in the stomach to break down.
The bile backs up and it causes a syndrome that seems like
gallbladder attacks, upper abdominal pressure pain (bear hug), nausea
and vomiting. SOUND FAMILIAR? If you suffered from this knowingly
(diagnosised) or if you had the symptoms and things got better
suddenly, What did you different? Here a good one for you
guys. .............Learning everyday...............Jen from CA

Re: How long on liquids life in recovery and beyond

I have to agree with you. My nurses, too, wanted me to be happy and
comfortable, once they realized that the morphine was making me
throw up and changed my pain meds, I was happy and content to sleep
and rest and they were happy to let me do it. The next day they
convinced me to walk, once I started, they couldnt get me to stop.
One doctor commented that they were going to install a raceway in
the hallway for me. Those interesting booties that make you feel
like you're walking while you're laying down were a trip, and I
could hardly wait to get rid of them! Before I left, I wrote a
compliment letter to the Nurse and the Patient Care Assistant and
had a copy delivered to the Head Nurse of the Surgical Unit. They
deserved to be recognized for their excellent Patient Care. By the
way, I had my surgery at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena,
CA, Dr. Wes Powell. They are wonderful there!

I made it to the other side.

2006-12-20 21:04:33

I had my surgery on Tuesday August 12. It was the LAP procedure.
You know, I feel like I've been punched in the belly a few good hard
times! I understand that it's normal, but still, no one really tells
you that. I didn't come out of the anesthesia well and woke up
nauseaus and throwing up. No one listened to me before hand that I
don't do well with morphine. When they finally changed my pain meds
to Torodol, I began to do much better. On the day after surgery I
had little sips of just water and ice chips. It felt so good going
down, but it made me feel like I had just finished a bottle of
seltzer water. Burping and hiccoughing are not fun at this stage. On
the 2nd day after surgery, I was not ready to go home yet. They
started me on diluted apple juice and cranberry juice, plain old
Ocean Spray mixed 50/50 with water and ice. That seemed to go down a
bit better and I was also able to move up to 4 oz an hour. This
helped to quench my thirst a bit more, as I felt really parched.I
went home the third day after surgery and started on my protein
shakes. the dietician told me to mix 2 measuring spoons full of
powder with my water, so I can make sure to get the protein in. I am
sipping water all the time, in between the shakes. I have also had
the clear liquid of Miso soup, which was heavenly, albeit a little
salty. I also had some sugarfree lime jello which was just the best
thing ever! I think my tastebuds are just a little sensitive now.
Now my goal is to drink my liquids and get in my proteins. My
doctors plan has me on this program for 2 weeks and then slowly
adding thicker liquids, moving up to pureed foods in the next few
weeks, however I can tolerate it. From reading so many posts (I've
been lurking for a long time!) my advice to those of you who have
questions about what liquids and when is to ask your doctor. You
don't want to introduce things too early into your very sensitive
system, at least for the first 6 weeks you are raw and swollen
inside, follow the doctors plan for you. The day I was leaving the
hospital I "met" another woman who had her surgery the day before.
We nodded at one another in the hallway, just knowing we belonged to
a special group. I asked her how she was feeling, she agreed it
wasn't exactly what she had bargained for, but she knew it would get
better. I know it will get better, too. I have a lot of support in
my life from people who have been on this side for 14 months
(husband and wife did it on the same day) a cousin and a friend who
both had surgery in January (he's down 135, she is down 87) It is an
amazing journey. I'm so glad I started now. Thanks for letting me
post!
As I slide back into lurking position...

How long on liquids

2006-12-20 04:26:30

Deb,
I am on liquids for the first 3 - 4 weeks. I could add cream soups
after one week, also applesauce, yogurt, and anything liquid. I
enjoy V8 now also. I am use to the liquid now and it is easy, but
there are times i need to chew on something, so surgar free
popsicles saved me. I think I ate only those for the first week
home..lol Good luck on monday and you are in my prayers.

Re: Hunger Hormone?

2006-12-19 22:11:50

I believe there is something that changes for some people after this
surgery. I know some people are still hungry and have to fight that
all the time, but that has not been the case for me. I am only 2
weeks post-op, but dont feel bad to see my family eat. I fix them
all the food, and just leave the room while they eat. I made
cookies for my kids and wasnt tempted in the least bit either. I
dont know if there is a hormone that is helping me or the fear of
getting sick from eating things I cant have right now. I know that
things taste different to me. I like yogurt and V8 and before
surgery i wouldnt touch them. I know that i can drink more than i
probably should be able to at one time. I can sip a 8 oz shake in
about 15 mins. Can anyone else do that?

Hunger Hormone?

2006-12-19 15:00:55

I keep hearing about how wls cuts off the horme that makes people
want to eat so much. I don't see how this is possible. How can
reducing the size of our stomachs reduce a hormone? If that was
true than why are so many people still hungry after having gastric
surgery and some people have trouble losing weight even after the
surgery ???
Anna

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Hunger Hormone?

2006-12-19 10:28:31

Anna,
I am not sure there is such a thing as a hormone that makes you want to
eat. I think it's more of a case of how you think about things, at least
in my own opinion. I know that in my experience, the 'head hunger' got
easier as I was allowed more foods and I really do fill up faster and
don't want as much with my new tummy. Tonight, for example, we went to
my favorite Mexican food place and for desert, my family ordered
sopapillas. I love these sweet treats! However, I was not tempted one
single bit by the smell of cinnamon, sugar and honey as I normally would
have been. I thought, boy those look good, but they didn't look good
enough for me to want to try one, if you get my drift.
Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Hi everyone! This is my 2nd trip to the group. I am having surgery

need to buy a food processor or a good blender. Is one better than
the other for pureeing food? Ideas, brands, range of costs??? Thanks,

Hi Mark
I am sorry this is the first time I am ever reading this post from you but
yes post ops (when your surgeon says it's ok) start the pureed stage of food
consumption. This stage that I will be experiencing very soon consists mostly
of
protein based foods like chicken, tuna, turkey and you should process them
until they are of baby food consistency and go light on the seasonings until
after you have tasted it. The amount of food you eat should be something that
is
discussed with you by your surgeon. In fact your surgeon or nutrionist has a
responsibility to provide you with literature of what you are exactly
supposed to eat and how much and when and how to prepare these foods. If you
did not
receive this information I think you should demand it from them ASAP.

I agree 100%, Lori. It disturbs me that too many
medical questions are posed here to those of us who
have little or no medical background. I would
encourage everyone who is experiencing a

seek help at your local emergency room as soon as
possible. The speed at which you get professional

After all the worry that they put me through, I had the cardiac stress test
that they ordered on Thursday. Just in case you forgot... I was scheduled
for RNY on Wednesday August 13 when the doctor's office called me at 4pm the
day before surgery to tell me that something was wrong with my EKG.
So I took the test again along with the stress test and all is well! So now
I am rescheduled for this Friday August 22nd at 1:30pm. I'm a little more
nervous about this time because I will be the last surgery of the day on
Friday. I wouldn't want my Doctor to subconsciencely rush through my
procedure on his way to the beach or something. Before I was scheduled first
on a Wednesday...I felt better about that. My wife tells me that there is
absolutely no concern on when he does the surgery, but I'm not convinced. I
guess I'm just nervous about the whole thing and I'm focusing on the time
aspect. I don't know. I just hope everything goes alright.

Hi all, I too am new to wls, mine will be on Sept 15th in Tulsa OK with Dr
Bosquez (I live in KS). I'm worried because I've only had one other minor
surgery and it was 13 years ago. I'm afraid my age may make me slower to
recover (I'm 52). I am determined to suceed though. However I am Lactose
Intollerant and am wondering is anyone else has this problem and if it
improves or adds to the problems. I love dairy but it doesn't like me.
Ocassionally now, I have it anyway and suffer the consequences. What happens
after the surgery. I'm also wondering if it will cause problems with the
gastric exam that is coming up later this month. I see the Dr for the first
time this Tuesday. Hope to hear more of your experiences.

When I had to go for a psychiatric testing it was a 567 question true/false
test called the MMPI. You can look it up online, but it doesn't tell you
very much. It's just a bunch of stupid questions so the shrink or therapist
can get a good idea of your personality. It's pretty accurate too, lol. The
shrink told me that I was living in a stressful situation, I'm overly
sensitive to rejection, and I'm not a happy person. I almost looked at him
and said "DUH!" lol. It's not too hard.
PS. The best websites to research, if you don't already know about them, are
www.gastricbypassfamily.com (which you probably know since you are here,
lol) and www.obesityhelp.com . www.sabaratric.com is pretty good too. Good
luck in your journey.

and to also increase my exercise. Like they told me hang in there and it will
start moving again.
Let me know how you do okay.

Re: Thanks for all the advice Debora and others! Still more ????

2006-12-14 12:48:41

Diana, I had the same kind of psych testing it sounds like you are
having. It wasn't BAD... just LONG and tedious! First I met w/
the psychologist, who asked me several GENERAL questions (such
as 'what is today's date? Who is the President of the United
States?'... stuff like that. Then she said she was going to have
me take a written test of true or false questions. I'm thinking,
OK... no problem! She put me in a room w/ a desk and gave me the
instructions to the test, which appeared to be in a big ledger-type
of book. She left the room, and I started the test, equipped with
several #2 pencils! The questions ranged from things like, "My
mother is a good person. If deceased, my mother WAS a good person"
to stuff like, "I often hear little voices telling me what to do".
A lot of the questions were very similar ways of saying the same
thing. I'll tell you, I thought the test was NEVER going to END.
There ended up being 500 questions on it! Stuff like "I am afraid
of snakes" and "I am not afraid of frogs" to "I believe that dreams
should be analyzed and used as life-tools" and "If given the
opportunity, I would sneak into the movies without paying". Now,
I'm not exactly sure how this proves that I'm mentally prepared for
WLS, but hey! I did WHATEVER my insurance company told me to do,
and the psych eval was a required step! I'm still waiting for
approval... it's only a matter of time.

One month post op

2006-12-11 19:04:34

Hi Everyone,
This past Tuesday, I went for my 1 month post op. I am down 32lbs.
The dietician has told me to eat chopped foods and to start on cooked
vegetables. Guess what, I tried eating non pureed food on Wed and
Thurs and I had the worse case of throwing up that I can remember.
Severe, forceful throwing up any time that I tried eating solids.
Water stayed down as long as I tood sips of it. I called Dr. Klem's
office and he told me that he wanted to see me Friday at 9am at the
hospital. I spent 5 hours at the hospital getting a bag of IV (yes,
dehydrated again) and having an upper GI. It seems that the opening
from the pouch to my small intestine is the correct size. Now I'm
keeping a food journal of everything that I put into my mouth, liquid
and solids. Dr. Klem is hoping this will pass. So do I.

I just wanted to take the time to thank the people in this group for
all their support and for all the information that has been provided
to me. I am 2 weeks post-op, and this group really helped me make
some decisions and provided me with answers to questions I didn't
even know to ask pre-op.
It is amazing the kind of changes that start happening as soon as you
really start recovering from the actual surgery. For example, I don't
know what my favorite foods are anymore, and I can't tell what will
taste good until I try it. One bite or one sip lets you know pretty
quick, though! LOL Poor hubby was so frustrated trying to fix things
for me that I could eat/drink, and I felt sorry for him. He was a
darling though, and just kept trying stuff. Gotta love that! I tried
to stock up on things I thought I would need after the surgery, but
nothing tasted like I expectd, and a lot of that stuff may never be
used-at least by me! Chicken broth was nasty no matter what I did to
it, and the Crystal Lite lemonade that seemed so good pre-op is not
acceptable to me now. It feels like my taste buds have been rewired!
Go figure. I was never a water drinker, but since the morning after
surgery a glass of ice cold water has been the best thing in the
world. Sugar free Jell-o, water, sugar-free popsicles and Wyler's
sugar free green tea with peach(served hot like an herbal tea)got me
through the clear liquid stage. But I had a hard time choosing
flavors that were good to me. Any more surprises like this down the
pike? Give me the scoop!

ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS TESTING????? And then I see the

many searches and learned so much and I am so happy to be able to
finally do something to help my weight loss. Any tips for things
anyone has to offer I would greatly appreciate and feel free to email

sarah's update

2006-12-10 03:23:43

Hi All
just wanted to give everyone an update about sarah as shes been
really sore and hurting alot these last few days. trying to start
school this week proved to be too much for her. The school for one
was not going to make the modifactions and adjustments to her
schedule, we had a letter from her surgeon requesting this for
her,and were fighting me on her diet, have been fighting with them
all week ,were making wait till 1:30 to be able to have lunch and
mind u she caught the bus everyam at 7am , if u didnt know we are
stationed in NC @ Pope AFB and mine and sarah's surgeries were both
done at Portsmouth Naval hosp Virginia, so we have to drive 5 hrs
each way for careand we take 2 days for these trips to allow for
what ever testing or anything else to be done while were there,
anyway the schools here have a policy that a student cant miss more
then 8 days per semester and work can not be made up and if u miss
more then the 8 days no matter if your a A student or not its an
automatic D in all classes and thats nt passing here , so i pulled
sarah out of school and we will begin to homeschool her instead (now
mind u sarah is only 16 and a sophmore in school)we had to take her
to the army hosp here at FT Bragg to the surgery clinic as she
developed a abcess in her incision the last couple of days which is
why they sent her home from school on tues. anyway everything is
being taking care of and shes doing much better tonite. as soon as
she feels better ill have her post a message herself. sarah is now 4
weeks postop and weight wise doing very good lol (o:

new numbers/a year later

2006-12-09 09:55:20

Yey,all
Yesterday I was in Little Rock so I dropped by my surgeon's office
to be weighed: 341.8 lbs, or a total loss of 263.2 lbs. in 15
months! When I got back to my hometown I went to my PCP's office
and weighed there: 338 lbs! That's the first time I've been
weighed on my doctor's scale in 18 years (it only goes to 350#).
That made me think about a few differences in the last year or so.
One year ago on August 9 I finally left the hospital after three
months. I had to use a wheelchair after my long incarceration (it
least it FELT like being in prison to me), graduating to a walker
after MUCH physical therapy. This year I don't need any of that and
I work out at the gym on weights and the treadmill. Last year I
took a lot of medications. This year only my supplements and one
lone blood pressure pill that stubbornly refuses to surrender. Last
year I couldn't walk more than 3-4 steps even with the walker
without stopping to rest. This year, I took my daughter a few weeks
ago to tour Blanchard Springs Caverns in Arkansas.
What a difference a year makes, huh?

P.S.--Even though my PCP's scale numbers are 3 pounds lower and look
better, I'm still using the higher in my "official" stats. After
all, I've been going by the reading on my surgeon's scale all this
time, so I might as well continue to.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] PCOS Polycystic Ovary Disease

2006-12-08 14:49:33

I have PCOS. I actually on have one ovary remaining - I had a hysterectomy
when I was 23 with one ovary removed due to adenomyosis and endometriosis. I
am 3 months post op. It didnt come up at all when I was getting approved for
the surgery, but I have definitely noticed more pain in my ovary since surgery,
especially the last month. It seems like it is really producing cysts right
now and I dont know what wls has to do with that except maybe my hormone
levels are changing as I lose weight.

PCOS Polycystic Ovary Disease

2006-12-08 04:47:20

Hi-
I have been reading the posts for a few weeks, am very interested in getting the
surgery and now awaiting the information session by the doctor so I can get the
ball rolling. My question to you girls out there is: Does anyone have PCOS and
does it affect, either positive or negative, having WLS? One of the main
symptoms for this disease is weight gain! It makes so much sense now, but I am
worried it will hinder my chances of getting approved. I would love to hear any
responses if you know anything.
Thanks,

Tanya, let me add just one more thing and then I'll leave it alone.
The reason I questioned it in the first place is because when my
doctor first brought it up to me, he told me that one patient took
it and it burned a hole in his pouch and he died. Again, at my pre-
op, he wrote on my notes NO NSAID's, which I believe Advil is one.
Might warrant a little more research on your part. Just looking out
for you. Take care!

Well guys, I understand everything you've said about Advil and what have
you but I think I'm still going to stick with what my surgeon says. He's
been doing this for a very long time (over 5000 surgeries under him) and
I hope he wouldn't tell me that it was okay if it wasn't. After all, I
only take it occasionally when I have a migraine (like around that time
of the month) so I can't see it hurting too much. Thanks for all your
input though. I really appreciate it! :-)

Hello list...
Our Dr. also said that Advil and the like are off-limits. My problem is that
both my wife and I suffer from inflamed TMJ and the only thing that works
are anti-inflamatories like Advil and ibuprofen. Does anyone else have this
problem that can suggest another remedy? Ibuprofen works better than real
drugs like vicodin believe it or not.

Thank you all who replied to the question re pills. Started taking my
HBP pills yesterday with water instead of crushing. Worked fine and I
feel free..........I really have been a victim of very poor post op
information from my surgeon's office. Until I found this group I was
treading water. Now I feel more confident that I have people to turn
to. Ya know, there is a support group associated with my Dr. office
but when I attended a meeting PRE-op, all they did for 1 1/2 hrs was
talk about FOOD! Not what I needed.
Again thanks to you all................................Jen from CA

They are so good with giving you plenty of pain med. You will be
fine and if you are feeling uncomfortable, ask for more meds. The
body healths better if it is not dealing with pain also.
I was more nervous about "after" than the actual surgery. I am only
